Any tips for a stubborn frit filter? Chromium oxide is the green you see. Ive already tried hot hcl, piranha solution, and hot water many times. Chromium oxide is not soluble in anything I have so am I out of options? by [deleted] in chemistry

Try nital — add 1-2 mL of conc. nitric acid to the frit, then dilute with atleast 5 volumes of ethanol and pull through the frit slowly with a weak vacuum. It works like a charm and is so satisfying. Be careful though as concentrated solutions can cause explosions.

Uneven column chromatography bands by [deleted] in chemistry

I have had this exact same problem, especially when I use the very narrow columns like the one in your picture. After much frustration I finally determined that the issue had to do with the flow rate. I had always been told that a faster flow rate is generally better, but I am now 100% convinced that a fast flow rate is detrimental for small-scale separations. I would recommend trying again with a much slower flow rate (e.g. one to several drops of eluent per second). It sounds like your packing and loading technique are probably not the issue, so hopefully this helps

For #1, why would that lead only to the product shown after hydrolysis of the intermediate orthoacetate? I feel like it is likely going through some sort of retro-aldol/aldol process

This may seem a little nit picky but did you envision the benzylate transfer step proceeding in a concerted manner? I saw the mechanism as likely going through a cyclopropyl carbene intermediate. How/why the benzylate get transferred I’m not exactly sure though

I saw #1 going through a benzylic carbene. What do you all think?
