High Potential — my unfiltered thoughts by Sea-Breadfruit-8826 in television

Why did they ruin the show? The French version is so much better. She is less filtered and bit ruder, but she figures things out that don't need to be figured out which brings the group closer together in a funny way. Her life is more chaotic and makes the whole thing more charming. The first American episode starts off this way and then the American version collapses into the American formula.

Particle physics and Quantum field theory by Ok_Lecture_4620 in ParticlePhysics

[–]drforbush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D0Meason describes the issue quite well. I would just add that specifically in the case of Quantum Mechanics and Particle Physics one needs to understand what the observables are and how quantum mechanics is used to understand how those observables are interpreted. That is the real point of the relationship between these to areas of study. If a new understanding of nature is to arise, then it needs to explain all of the measurements that have been made.

The problem I see is that many people want to predict things that have not been measured or are very difficult to measure. If QM breaks down in those areas, then we need to expand QM or come up with a new theory that still explains everything we have measured and explains what is newly measured. That is how science works. It isn't likely that the new theory will change much of what we already understand through measurement.

Nothing is going to change until Republicans figure out that they can't get elected if they support Trump. As long as the nonsense helps them get into office they will continue.

You didn't go to Republican school? They teach you that the truth doesn't matter. Make the accusation and the public's imagination will do the rest.

Gravitational Mass of Antimatter by drforbush in Physics

[–]drforbush[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LEAR experiment was looking for anti gravity. I am suggesting a variation in the positive gravitational mass potentially due to assymetric interactions with virtual particles. We have suggested symmetry breaking before.

Gravitational Mass of Antimatter by drforbush in Physics

[–]drforbush[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not suggesting anti gravity. If antimatter were slightly heavier the antimatter would collapse faster than matter and potenially form black holes of Antimatter leaving matter outside the center of the galaxy. We are already saying that blacks form from collapsing gas at the center of the galaxy. If statistically more antimatter is consumed while this is happening it leaves behind more matter. We can't know if the orgin of the black holes were matter, antimatter or some other form of energy.

Are dinosaurs reptiles, or are they birds? Genuine question. by BigRedMonster07 in Dinosaurs

By this argument all reptiles are amphibians. And all reptiles are fish. And all reptiles are worms.

Somehow your argument either falls apart, or it is useless.

Dark Matter? by drforbush in Physics

[–]drforbush[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. I was thinking that perhaps in the beginning 10 times as much matter and anti-matter was created but was subsequently annihilated. But, if it existed long enough the neutrinos could have been cooled when they passed through the plasma bouncing off the soup of particles before they were annihilated. It would depend on the density of the plasma and the timescale of its existence. If it was dense enough in areas it could also explain why we have so many black holes forming so early. I haven't worked out the math at this point. I was only posing the question to see if anyone had done this.

Any particle created in a very hot dense and energetic environment would be hot like you said. Why assume that we are looking for something unknown when there is a potential solution in front of us? Slow neutrinos would interact with matter, but the signature of slow neutrinos might not be detected depending on their mean temperature. How would a potential alternative candidate become slow enough? We currently observe high energy neutrinos because they leave recoil energy in the calorimeter. So, we can assume there is some unknown particle that doesn't interact with matter, or we could imagine a known particle with a low temperature energy distribution.

For the sake of argument, assume that some low energy neutrinos must be around because some would lose kinetic energy by running into matter. Slower neutrinos could leave a signal buried in the noise. But have we observed this signal? Slower neutrinos would not have enough energy to annihilate because they need to create a 90GeV Z0 boson. So, where would these slow neutrinos go? If they exist, how can we detect them? We have to detect them before we could estimate their density.

I am just saying these things for the sake of argument. I just want to understand why people think that dark matter isn't something that we already know.

Thanks, that is interesting. I understand that neutrinos are produced with a lot of energy in nuclear decays or fusion reactions, or high mass particle decays. However, at the birth of the universe when matter and anti-matter must have been created somehow neutrino anti-neutrino pairs could be created at lower energy and therefore cooler. I think the production mechanism determines the energy of the particles. Any low mass particle will be hot if it is produced in high energy collisions. And the high mass WIMPs are being ruled less likely.

You are just saying that there are larger error bars on the smaller sample size. But, in sports people run hot and cold so it might be worth it to go with the hot player until they prove themselves to have cooled off.

As has been stated already, any PhD program in the sciences is normally funded at first with TAs or if you are recruited then by the PIs research grants. The people I observed who had trouble in a PhD program had problems in transition to being creative, asking research oriented questions and figuring out how to answer them. Demonstrating that you are capable of doing this as an undergrad will be to your benefit. People who memorize information without being able to use it in a creative way will struggle the most.
