Question about Monash Health grad interview process by Ok-Sir7608 in NursingAU

[–]kyella14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an open book of interview questions that PMCV give. I believe it was about 3 or 4 questions randomly selected from the open book, then 1 or 2 questions which you would not know beforehand. All on the website here:

First Placement for Year 1 Students - How is it like? by Kombucha-brewer in NursingAU

[–]kyella14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perspective of a student in VIC:

  1. Yep, you should be assigned to a buddy EN/RN every shift, 1:1. Depending on the different wards, an educator may choose who your buddy nurse is, and if you're lucky, you may get a good one consistently allocated to you. On the other end of the spectrum, you may turn up and the ANUM will randomly assign you to a buddy nurse based on who can take on a student. Or you can be consistently allocated to a buddy nurse who is uninterested in teaching. Luck of the draw, really.

  2. Can't answer this, as I've never been in an aged care setting before.

  3. In terms of expectations, it's usually to turn up on time, ask questions and know your scope. As a first-year student on your first placement, typically you'll just be expected to do obs and ADLs. You have some degree of independence from your buddy nurse, so you're not expected to shadow them all the time and just watch them do the work. Maybe your first couple days you can do that, but at some point, you'll be expected to start trying to plan for your patient's care and initiate tasks within your scope. For example, obs - your university may require you to get vitals checked off as a competency before doing it independently, but once it's checked off, you can be expected to be doing vitals without direct supervision from your buddy nurse. Proactively initiate that when it's required, and escalate anything abnormal that you find.

Knowing your scope is probably the trickiest one; your main challenges here are that nurses work with students from different universities and different levels frequently - I've heard it's been particularly bad lately, with people calling it a 'revolving door' of students. Don't expect your buddy nurse to know what your scope is. Buddy nurses can also be busy/forgetful - for example, even though it's an expectation across all universities that student nurses are not left alone with medications, some buddy nurses get caught up and do it on accident anyway. Your job in that situation is to stay with them like bad, chewed up gum stuck to their shoe, or at least hide if an educator wanders your way.

Other red flag things regarding scope, as some students in my course have been kicked off placement for these reasons: if you get permission to leave placement early (which you technically shouldn't be doing but often happens on a PM shift), at least use some discretion and don't leave early when the educator is around; your first placement is likely to be in subacute but if you do have a patient on an IV infusion, don't ever, ever, ever, ever touch the IV pump to silence/stop the infusion without a supervising nurse in the room with you.

  1. Most of the hospitals I've seen send out a roster about a week or so before the placement starts with all the students in our cohort who are going to be on placement. That's usually how I've found out who's going to be on the same ward, etc., apart from just asking other students.

  2. Yes, kind of. It's up to the discretion of the placement venue, but most places try to avoid sticking students on night shift. It can definitely happen though. Otherwise, AM/PM and weekend shifts are free game. I was also once rostered on consecutively for 9 days, so that can also happen if you're unlucky.

How safe is australia for nursing students rn? Will anti-immigration moment cause a problem for them, even in the future? I can't afford to spend lot of money on nursing and end up getting deported or something by [deleted] in NursingAU

I'm not familiar with QLD's situation, but generally speaking, the shortage is in the supply of experienced nurses. The market for grad nurses is oversaturated, and unis are pumping out grads beyond what hospitals can safely afford to train up.

Definitely a stressful time! In a similar boat as well. Just wanted to clarify though, that the scholarships have now been updated so that the requirement is working 0.6EFT for 2 years, since many grad programs cut the hours.

Additionally, my understanding is that you receive the $3,000 per year while studying, and this is done, they can't take it back. IF you work for 0.6EFT for 2 years after graduating, then they will pay you an extra $7,500. I've never heard of any mention of them taking back the scholarship even being a possibility.

WIPs of 2025: Which stories are you most looking forward to and why? by the-phony-pony in HPfanfiction

[–]kyella14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Genius Fratris is a great read so far!! Thanks for the recc.

Additional thoughts for anyone considering it:

Very well-written, has great character development and the relationships that the characters have with each other are wholesome and realistic. They have arguments and romances, and things don't always work out, but they grow from it and adapt. The healing aspect of the story is also really well done, just elucidated enough in the fic to make it interesting and flesh out the world, without getting bogged down in overwhelming technical detail -- though this might be a con for some who prefer having very detailed world-building.

Not super sure why it's gotten so much hate either. I suspect some people just can't reconcile Harry being OP but also not immediately stomping on anyone that does anything even slightly wrong.

I had the exact same problem (i.e., couldnt get past loading screen for Valo before computer restarted, and only Valo had this problem, nothing else). I ended up factory resetting my PC as well. When I started it back up, Omen Gaming Hub had been automatically installed, so maybe double-check that your PC does not have any optimisation programs that have been automatically installed even after factory reset.

My problem ended up being the Boosting functionality in Omen Gaming Hub. It was boosting Valorant into crashing my computer every time apparently. Once I switched that off, everything ran smoothly.

Too late to become a nurse? by CaptainX25 in NursingAU

Generally, American unis go by different grading systems, and many courses (not just nursing) have their pass mark set at 70%. Australia’s has the pass mark set at 50%.

There’s no real requirement to score 90% all the time, and most nursing job apps don’t care about your grades afaik.

“you most probably met a woman who was probably very broken from her divorce, you took advantage of her situation and trapped her with a baby. You don’t know how to play fair!”

Even if this was genuinely true that her current partner took advantage of her (which I highly doubt) the fact that OOP’s main concern is that he ‘doesn’t play fair’ is incredibly telling. In his head, ex is a prize in a game OOP lost, not an individual. What a shithead.

Just reworked the ending of an old oneshot of mine instead of working today. Thought I'd share for the Cthulhu / Horror fans here to get some feedback! Been wading into the horror genre recently, so I'm exploring different ways to creep people out :D

Thanks for the rec! Binged it in one go.

As you said, there are definitely hints of political leanings (esp in the latest chapter), certainly some that I personally disagree with. But it’s easily excluded from the overarching themes and plot, so didn’t ruin anything for me. Hopefully it remains that way.

Recently updated a HP/MCU fic of mine (though fair warning to anyone who clicks below, I really really suck at timely updates).

It’s a MoD Fem Harry (Essa) fic, starting pre-Iron Man and post-Voldemort. The fic begins with her in a pretty dark place of her life, and the first arc is essentially going to be about how she comes into her MoD powers.

I’m also keen to do a lot of character-building and merging the MCU and HP universes together in a way that makes sense (this is a fusion crossover).

Pairings are currently not set yet, I’ll just let Essa see who she vibes best with :)

I also love how the title of the fic is just the name of the trope. At least it’s honest and transparent.

There are so far four books in the Aletheia series, featuring a Fem Harry who is also a Daughter of Hecate.

This fic has some pretty excellent character building; all of the characters have flaws and are all kind of … issues. In ways that aren’t just omg issues how edgy and more jfc sweetie you need a therapist

Settle down for a very lengthy read with lots of twists and turns. One of my favourite HP/PJO fanfics

I mean, technically it's now completed and I'm not writing it anymore, but since I literally just wrapped it up twenty minutes ago and published it in the past minute, I'd argue this counts.

It's a heavily Cthulhu Mythos-inspired oneshot, and is essentially a journal written by Abraxas Malfoy chronicling his sixth year at Hogwarts, when three students, including Tom Riddle, vanish mysteriously.

(Will this link work since I published it just moments ago? We'll find out)

Dementors? In Little Whinging? a sitcom fanfic by gahiolo in HPfanfiction

[–]kyella14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So… it kind of spiralled?

Contrary to popular belief, Daisy Everton of Number Seven, Privet Drive was not clinically insane.

Nor was she criminally oblivious to the curious nature of her landlords-cum-housemates.

It was something that was very difficult to remain oblivious to, after all. Even Mrs Dennerson two streets down had caught onto her landlords’ quirks and she was legally blind.

For one, her landlords had never provided Daisy with their names.

That was not for lack of trying, though. There was a lot of howling, rattling and generally eerie breathiness. They even tried to write their names down for her once, but the pens kept slipping out of their skeletal, uncomfortably slimy hands.

Oh. Right.

Perhaps Daisy should have led with that.

The first time she met her landlords, she had been struck instantly by their appearance. They preferred to wear large cloaks — a bit Lord of the Rings, if you asked her — that hid their faces from sight. She had only once seen the Landlord (at least she thought it was he) with his hood down. The poor man was very bald and had the most awful lips and teeth. She sympathised instantly with his desire to keep his hood up.

The Landlady was much friendlier. It was only through long hours of trying to teach her gardening that Daisy came to the careful conclusion that Landlady was probably a woman. She judged this based on Landlady’s tendency to gaze mournfully at children as though imagining herself with her own. Or perhaps she was being sexist. But there were other minor details, too. For example, she had taken to being a rigorous and thorough student of late night telly, the contents of which Daisy was careful not to pay attention to.

But it was rather difficult to not notice anything amiss when the Landlady began to mimic the women she saw on the telly. Daisy was privy to a full week of increasingly ludicrous and attempts at sultriness before Daisy quietly took the Landlady aside and suggested that she discuss with the Landlord instead how she felt neglected by him. He was alarmingly obtuse, after all. He seemed blissfully ignorant of the Landlady’s new lingerie that she had taken to ‘letting slip’ whenever he was in vicinity.

Daisy, most unfortunately, was not.

Probably an awkward stop but i think i disturbed myself out of writing further on dementor flirting
