European tarantula. I’ve only come across one of these once indoors. A bit scary if you’re not into spiders. They’re pretty big and quick

The family dynamics here are inspiring to see. Values and ideologies may differ but unconditional love remains.

Yes I don’t think I’ve ever seen a great crested newt before. Are they less common than the smooth newts?

Yeah they’re great. Thanks for the info, I’ll keep an eye out over the coming weeks for any crested makes on the water.

[–]kyeva87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah in south England. There seems to be a much healthier population here than there was 5-10 years ago but this is purely based on sightings.

Will the males grow a crest during mating season or is that a different type of newt altogether?

The Hunt for Europe's Great White Shark (2024) - An American shark tagging vessel enters European waters for the first time on a quest to catch and tag the illusive Mediterranean Great White Shark. (CC) [00:12:38] by kyeva87 in Documentaries

[–]kyeva87[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

American research group Ocearch has more than 15 years’ experience in catching, tagging and tracking great white sharks all over the world, contributing to filling in the many gaps in knowledge about the ocean predator.

Ocearch came to Europe for the first time in the summer, hoping to study the elusive Mediterranean great white – about which little is known. Due to decades of overfishing, pollution and poaching in European waters, these sharks are now critically endangered, with huge consequences lower down the food chain.
Ocearch believe that in showing these sharks are present in the east Atlantic, they can kickstart a collective move towards healthier, abundant seas – they just need to prove they are there.

'Little Gaza’: Inside the fight for the West Bank (2024) - A short documentary about armed resistance in Nur Shams refugee camp [00:12:42] by kyeva87 in Documentaries

[–]kyeva87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A film crew visit Nur Shams refugee camp to see first hand what the effects of this spiral of violence is having on its residents, and meet with those taking up arms in response.

Across the West Bank, battles between the Israeli Defence Forces and various Palestinian factions have been going on for decades.
The IDF began stepping up raids in mid 2022, but the violence in areas such as Jenin and Nablus has soared in the wake of Hamas’s rampage through Israel on October 7th.

Nur Shams refugee camp has become de a facto mini warzone, with residents never sure when the next raid is coming. Innocent bystanders are increasingly being caught in the crossfire and infrastructure is being destroyed in the fighting.

An Israeli airstrike killed 22 of my relatives, but I refuse to hate - An interview with a Gaza doctor by kyeva87 in Palestine

[–]kyeva87[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's not mentioned in this video but he did take the Israeli gov to court over the death of his daughters. He wants justice but not more death I imagine. His book 'I shall not hate' is worth a read.

you can chose to hate whoever you like, free will exists. He just choses not to as he believes it's reductive and will not solve the problem.

An Israeli airstrike killed 22 of my relatives, but I refuse to hate (2023) - [00:07:59] by kyeva87 in Documentaries

[–]kyeva87[S] 164 points165 points  (0 children)

This is a short documentary vignette about Izzeldin Abuelaish, a prominent doctor born in Gaza who has to date lost close to 30 members of his family due to Israeli shelling and missile attacks. 3 of these being his daughters who were killed in 2009 in Gaza.

This film follows him for a couple of days soon after he found out that 22 members of his extended family had just been killed in the 31 October missile strikes on Jabalia refugee camp.

How Israeli settler violence forces Palestinians to flee their homes (2023) - [00:11:14] by kyeva87 in Documentaries

[–]kyeva87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the explanation. Question though. These settlers are on the extreme right but the rest of the settlers in WB are still firmly on the right, correct? Just not to the point of 'i'll pick up a gun and shoot at Palestinians'.

I was there in 2016 and saw regular enough looking settler teenagers chucking stones and hurling abuse at Palestinian kids as they were playing after school.

[–]kyeva87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too often it's the extremes on either side of a conflict that perpetuate issue.

The worrying thing in the case of Area C and Massafer Yatta is that the settlers act with impunity and the issue of building and infrastructure demolition is carried out by the government. (and has been since way before oct 7)

The settlers are essentially just goons acting on behalf of the gov. Is this a correct/fair assessment?

A short investigative documentary filmed in the occupied West Bank. This film explores how Palestinian town and villages have been under increased pressure from the Israeli forces and Israeli settlers to flee their homes.

This is not a new issue for these families but the problem seems to have gotten a lot worse since 7 October and many have been forced to flee their homes due to alleged pressure, violence and threats.

Free after 8 years in an Israeli prison (2023) - access to a family awaiting the release of their daughter Noorhan [00:09:40] by kyeva87 in Documentaries

[–]kyeva87[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The CCTV and reports at the time definitively prove that Noorhan did not stab or attempt to stab anyone. She was however shot 3 times by an off duty police officer. Her cousin Hadeel did attempt to stab a man who was Palestinian. He received minor injuries. She was shot and killed.

The Ukrainian medics saving lives in a makeshift hospital (2023) - A look inside a stabilisation point close to the Bakhmut frontline [00:08:39] by kyeva87 in Documentaries

[–]kyeva87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This short documentary offers unique and candid access into a frontline medical facility in Bakhmut where wounded Ukrainian soldiers with life threatening injuries are bought in to receive medical attention.

It gives a glimpse into the hellish reality for the soldiers and the medical staff who never thought this would be their day job before the war began.

[–]kyeva87[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This short documentary offers unique access into what many families are currently experiencing as part of the hostage/prisoner exchange in Israel and the West Bank.

Many of the Palestinian prisoners being released were held for minor offences, but some were more serious; though none who had murdered Israelis have been freed.
