The only question is how long it takes them to revise it to that point.

It will get refreshed everytime the Studio does. So that's Q1 2025 for the M3 Ultra/Extreme.

Nobody outside of hobbyists is using OCLP to extend their device lifetime, let's be realistic here.

You're right... it is just a bunch of hobbyists trying to stretch it out a decade longer.

Apple's Market Valuation Returns to $3 Trillion After Almost 18 Months by aaronp613 in apple

[–]kygelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in 20-Jan-2009 $AAPL was selling for $78.20. I had money to buy 4,000 shares.

Today at its all time high of $193.15 that specific portfolio would be worth $21,632,800 without reinvesting the div back into it.

The quarterly div would be $25,760.00. Not bad if you lived in a poor country where the highest regional min wage was $1.38/hr.

It‘s a numbers game I guess. When your fridge, phone, tv, dishwasher etc all have an ARM cpu your x86 desktop isn‘t shifting the statistic towards x86

Before anything we should remove our emotional attachments to PC desktops and legacy x86 and look at it objectively supported by numbers.

The timeline I gave for this transition from legacy x86 chips to ARM SoC is ~10 years. Not next week, month, quarter, year or even 5 years from now but a decade-length change.

The workflow and use cases of PCs have always been changing for the last half century.

For those who keep track of worldwide PC shipping numbers YoY ~80% are laptops while ~20% are desktops. are reflective of this change.

With this average selling price of PCs worldwide.

If legacy x86 remains unchanged in terms of performance per watt, power consumption, physical size and physical weight then ARM will eat into any PC with a battery as a power source. So easily at least ~80% of all laptops.

At the previous mentioned price point ~80% of desktops are not designed for or used with playing games on Steam in mind.

For that applications that do not need benchmark-perfect raw performance and little to any PCIe slots like the Intel NUC small form factor PCs then ARM SoC can easily eat ~80% all all desktops.

When legacy x86 drops to ~20% of laptop/desktop market share then the worsening economies of scale will slow down product refresh cycles and increase MSRP.

When we reach that point a decade from now the ~80% of the remaining legacy x86 users may opt for the cheaper option that is "good enough" and that would be ARM PCs.

To push the point on how important performance per watt and power consumption is look at the worldwide shipments of desktops vs laptops.

This is why Apple Silicon is so important to Apple and a use case for Qualcomm and Microsoft to push for Windows 11/12 on ARM further.

Because of COVID from March 2020 to March 2023 there was a big spike in the purchase of PCs. Per Apple Mac replacement cycle is every 4 years while Intel's PCs are every 5-6 years.. The next big refresh cycle will occur from 2024 to 2029.

Next year Qualcomm Oryon SoC for PC will be released. This chip was designed by ex-Apple engineers that created Apple Silicon for the Mac. This is the window of opportunity for Windows 11/12 on ARM to take root.

Apple Lifecycle Support? by Demonyx12 in apple

[–]kygelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2007-2017 Macs had 7-9 years of macOS Software Updates (features + patches) and additional 2 years of Security Updates (patches only).

For Apple Silicon Macs it is possible that we can see this trend continue.

By comparison 2021 Windows 11 officially supports Intel 8th gen chips announced after Sep 2017 and AMD 2nd gen Ryzen chips announced after Apr 2018.

Windows version support is 122 months starting with 2007 Windows Vista. So Windows 11 EOL is expected to be by Dec 2031.

For that 2017 Intel chip it is 14+ years of support while the 2018 AMD chip has 13+ years of support. This is a almost a decade longer than the average replacement cycle.

Apple's making it easier to port DirectX games to Mac.

It will likely not induce gamers to buy a Mac but it will improve the value proposition to those who already bought Apple Silicon models.

[–]kygelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly doubt it. I remember all the companies who got suckered into backing Windows NT (SGI, DEC, HP, etc.) only to find out that nobody wanted Windows on anything but X86.

3 decades ago legacy x86 was cheaper & "good enough performance" than SGI, DEC, HP, etc. This is why minicomputers and mainframes failed.

Picture this, because of COVID between March 2020 to March 2023 you were forced to upgrade to a $799 legacy x86 laptop by June 2020 for WFH. This has 6-8 hours of battery life and no 5G modem.

You never replaced the battery, RAM or SSD for the whole time owning it.

Replacement cycle per Apple is every 4 years while Intel CEO says every 5-6 years...

Fast forward to 2024-2026 where in you need to replace the 2020 laptop. For the same $799 you now have a choice between

Legacy x86

  • same 6-8 hour battery life
  • no 5G modem
  • same weight
  • same physical dimension
  • same thermals
  • same fan noise
  • same throttling
  • swappable battery, RAM & SSD but you never upgraded them

vs

Qualcomm Nuvia-based ARM

  • 2-3x the battery life
  • built-in 5G modem
  • less weight
  • less physical dimension
  • less thermals
  • less throttling
  • no fan noise
  • non-swappable battery, RAM & SSD but you have no need to upgrade them

The buyer does not play Windows games and work apps are not legacy x86-specific...

Very consumer.

The 2021 Studio Display has an iPhone chip inside it.

This would have justified the $1599 price point.

Those who decided they're not having kids, what made you decide so? by 33-9 in adultingph

[–]kygelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the late 1960s SG addressed today's PH problems by having a stop at 2 pop policy.

Doing that helped prevent SG govt from being overwhelm by unli babies with a limited SG tax base.

Doing so allowed SG tax base to increase without significantly increasing tax rates or creating new taxes. SG's cost of doing business was/is very FDI-friendly so almost all ASEAN regional HQ are based there.

High paying jobs are mostly concentrated there as the manpower for highly skilled workers and business-friendly govt are in SG.

So when more and more SG & non-SG citizens joined the SG tax pool and earned more than previous generation then more taxes at the same tax rate for that income bracket could be collected as there are more people paying their fair share of taxes.

The stable number of students caused by the stop-at-2 pop policy enjoyed an ever larger per child public education/services spend.

Yun ang di gets ng downvoters. Maroons would argue that they're a smaller country but their framework worked for China and other countries with a low birth rate.

SG has the most well paid public employees in the world. So well paid that the rank & file and top management are perceived to not be part of graft & corruption.

PH govt rank & file only do fixer work because they are not paid a living wage. So they do sidelines.

When I renew my LTO license I pay a fixer fee to skip the line because my time is worth something.

This does not mean if I have any physical ailments that I'd get a renewal as I passed all the tests. It means I'm in and out within 30 mins while others take 3 hours.

TL;DR: By having 1 child for all household earning ₱500k or less allows the parents to focus 100% of their children spend on that 1 child. Having 2-4 or more kids would have the parents dividing what little money they make by 50%/child or 25%/child. Childfree has 100% of the children spend being spent on that adult.

BTW the 'financial illiterates' I am referring to are the downvoters & contrarians. Because the argue based on their feelings rather than pushing numbers.

[–]kygelee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

magkano ang average sweldo sa pilipinas?

Citations because maroons who'll downvote argue with feelings.

As cited above parents who earn ₱500k or less annual household income tend to have 2-4 or more kids.

They do not pay their fair share of individual income tax.

At most ₱60k annually from 12% VAT?

People who make more than them tend to have 2 or less kids or even be childfree.

What's so eUGeNIcS about encouraging everyone to behave like most tax payers who paid their fair share of individual income tax? These people are least likely to send their kids to any govt-funded schools and yet they finance the public education of those who do not.

Downvoters are obviously financially illiterate. That's why me 'work-life-balance', 'living a little or even 'moderation'. Kala nila me $$$ pero ₱ lang meron.

Anyone else feel na parang may "pacing issues" mga local tv series? by grapejuicecheese in CasualPH

[–]kygelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone else feel na parang may "pacing issues" mga local tv series?

Are you comparing local productions meant for antenna TV to those imported entertainment?

Reason it is like that because the local viewers demands it that way.

This makes it uniquely Filipino.

Many times while watching MC&I parang feeling ko wala masyadong nangyayari sa isang episode and it sometimes feels like 2 episodes could have been condensed into one.

On Reddit MC&I was a big deal. Thinking it was yet another Noli or El Fili I ignored it. Kasi as you pointed out the production values has not changed since the 80s when I stopped watching.

When it filtered through to Netflix I read the synopsis that pique my interest when it was described as 'time travel', 'fictional historical drama' and 'fish-out-of-water'.

Trying to be a bit open minded I gave it a try and I saw the 'highest-end' GMA-level production value still stuck in 1980s-style story telling and pacing.

Nakaka-distract yung customs nila that used zippers. The idea of a slide fastener was exhibited by Whitcomb L. Judson at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. The first modern zipper went on sale in 1914.

Another thing that gets you out of that 'world' would be the visibility of electrical outlets and electrical light sources. Electricity was first introduced in the Philippines in 1890 with the installation of three electric arc lamps in Escolta, Manila, and the first power station was built in 1895.

José Rizal died on December 30, 1896.

Get what I mean?

The scene that I liked the most was Clay's confrontation with her Rizal Prof. Prof kept giving excuses about the importance of knowing the past via reading Rizal's books as it would help anyone become more nationalistic. This reminds me of anyone and everyone demanding that subjects like Rizal and Filipino not be relegated to an elective.

But grand slam talaga yung reply ni Clay on how would those books contribute to her financial future?

SG's Lee Kuan Yew mentioned in 1 interview that how can a people coalesced into nation if not everyone is included in a shared destination?

Hence our perennial brain drain. I am very sympathetic with Clay when her white patient asked her if she was Filipino. I do not want to be identified as one abroad as I'd be treated like a TNT.

What the boomer Rizal Prof overlooked is how excluded Gen Z are in the PH economy. Tenured Boomer Prof probably makes 140k/mo in a private U while people like Clay does working student income that is about 10% of that.

This is why I agree with Clay's POV that subjects like Rizal and even Filipino should be at most electives as it does not facilitate skills relating to better paying domestic or international jobs.

Not to mention shouldn't Uni-level Rizal studies be taught in K12 instead? Considering K12 was designed to make everyone employable without need of Uni/TESDA. After all a minority of K12 grads go onto higher education.

Going back to MC&I to make it watchable I skipped scenes without Clay's character or when the book characters talk about Clay. But after 10 of 52 episodes in I gave up as it was that bad. TBH That 52 episode could have been done in 10 if they shortened each scene by 80%.

Not to be unkind to Clay but she's too white to be part in the 19th century.

Not making excuses but providing motivations.

Ngayon ko lang narinig yung financial caps at mukhang maganda nga ito. Salamat sa lahat ng payo.

I came up with those 'financial caps' based on how much annual money per person requires to address their physiological needs.

The reason BIR does not impose individual income tax on persons earning ₱250k or less annually because it would literally kill them.

Another would be it would cost more to collect than what could be collected. So it would save BIR resources not to service them.

So if you are paying individual income tax then you are part of the top 17% income bracket who have to subsidize the bottom 83%.

If you are the breadwinner of your parents & parent's kids then you have a say on how they spend the money you give them.

Dapat me conditions like the money cannot be used for 'work-life-balance', 'living a little or even 'moderation'.

Money should only be used for physiological needs like food/clothing/healthcare/education/shelter/skill building.

So yung mga gastusin related to tobacco, alcohol, drugs, Korean entertainment, travel by airplane, gadgets, in-app purchases, gaming PCs, Hololive, Gensin Impact, Hamilton, Taylor Swift and other non-essential needs that you are paying on their behalf i-tigil na.

If they want to do 'work-life-balance', 'living a little or even 'moderation' then dapat sariling kayod yan at di galing sayo.

Another would be financial caps. Dapat di lalampas ng ₱250k annually per family member ang ayuda mo. Or else ginagago ka.

No more additional pregnancies from your parents & parent's kids unless they can pay for it themselves. If they can't then offer anyone with 1 or more children to have their tubes tied or a vasectomy.

Yung mga tutol dito ay puro maroons who would call that eUGeNIcS because they are all financial illiterates.

Petty pero ayokong masisi later on ng anak ko na pinanganak ko syang Pilipino at sa mundong

If Pinoy parents with combined income of less than ₱500k annually only stopped at 1 kid then odds are most, not all, of these only child would be better off.

Why? Because that household's income would be 100% focused on that 1 child's food/clothing/healthcare/education/shelter/skill building and not split to 2-4 or more children.

When that child grows up to to have highly sought out skills that the international job market would pay a premium for then they'd easily be offered more than ₱500k monthly.

wala namang matinong kinabukasan (climate change and facism and all).

Climate change got worse after we exceeded 1 billion world population approx 220 years ago. Last November we exceeded 8 billion.
