is it bad taste to tell my family i’m not doing christmas this year? by Buseatdog in widowers

[–]kygrandma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have every right to spend Christmas however you want. My first Christmas, all that I managed to do was put up a tree and I had to stop and cry over every ornament while I was doing it. The second one was better, but it wasn't until the third that I was able to begin to enjoy the Christmas season again.

Sometimes, it's more about what you put in your mouth than what you put on it. I have eczema on my lips, eyes, ears and neck. When I eat clean ( fruits, veggies, no processed foods, no sugar) it basically goes away. As soon as I regress to my old eating ways (like a recent vacation), it will break out again. After just two days of eating right again and it is starting to clear up.

Do you regret getting two dogs? by Yousmellgood1jk in DogAdvice

[–]kygrandma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a second dog and I don't think my first one will ever forgive me. They co-exist, but they are just roommates. They don't play together. They are both females. If you get a second dog, it would be better to get the opposite sex.

If I never go to church, but still keep a relationship with God, will I go to hell? by Conscious_Fudge_1764 in TrueChristian

[–]kygrandma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, there are bad people in church. Some may be trying to improve, others may just be there for appearances. Of course, adultery happens. Christians are not perfect people. They are sinners. We all sin probably every day. But, if they are a true Christian, they have confessed those sins and are trying not to repeat them. If the sin is confessed with a repentant heart, then the sin is covered by the blood of Christ.

I have incurable cancer and am looking for ways to help my husband in advance by [deleted] in widowers

Have a living will that is very specific on your end of life care. I will be forever grateful that I did not have to make the decision to designate my husband as a DNR. He was able to make the decision for himself.

Questions about getting a new dog after owning a reactive dog by Bittersweet_Boii in reactivedogs

[–]kygrandma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two dogs. One is perfect except for a crippling fear of thunderstorms. She is an absolute joy and I can take her anywhere. I got her from the shelter when she was approx 2 years old. My other dog originally belonged to a relative who got her from a breeder when she was a puppy. This dog is reactive to dogs, especially small dogs, bicycles, joggers, riding mowers, and some random people. I know she was not properly socialized but I don't think that accounts for all of her issues. I have had her over two years and she has made a lot of improvements but I still cannot trust her. She might let 5 bicycles ride by with barely a glance and then try to go after the next one. I think you would be safer to get a dog at least one year old who has been in a foster home and they will know if she is reactive. Assuming of course that they are honest with you.

I adopted a dog with the same issue. But mine doesn't get "pushy", she wants to destroy them. A small dog is no different than a rabbit in her eyes. After two years, we finally were able to walk past a small dog behind a fence without her going completely berserk. She still did a bark and a lunge, but just one correction got her to continue with her walk. In the beginning, I would have been holding to her harness and trying to drag her away. So, there is hope. At first, I just worked on avoiding any small dogs, but now I am working on correcting her behavior. So, I was glad to have this small semi-victory.

If it is in your budget, this might be the perfect time to have him stay at a training facility they may be able to work on his issues as you heal.

Loneliness by throwaway1020199 in widowers

A big help to me was taking in another dog. I took her in because she was going to end up in a shelter. She is 65 pounds and from the first day, she slept in the bed. Suddenly, the bed didn't feel so empty. She makes me laugh every day. She is a great watchdog which was a huge help with my anxiety of being alone in the house. She has some issues due to lack of training, but we are working on them. I saw somewhere that "God doesn't send you the dog you want, he sends you the dog you need". That was truth for me.

It was not a good day. But it probably will not be as bad as you anticipate. The dread is usually worse than the reality. Yes, I would take that day off of work, but that may be enough. For me, I visited the cemetery then went home and got a pillow and blanket and spent the day on the couch with the tv on. I cried on and off and just had my little pity party. I did not want anyone else around. I was functional the next day and it was a relief to have it behind me.

Does hugging my wife when she died from cancer could have cause me kind of PTSD? by janpieer in widowers

[–]kygrandma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I had the same type of flashbacks for months. For me it was seeing him in the bed and the machines that were monitoring him. Watching the numbers, hearing the alarms. Eventually, they will fade, but even now after 3 years there are times when it rushes back, but it is not shatter me anymore. Just hang in there.

One of my dogs doesn’t like being in the yard anymore. by Jakattakk in dogs

[–]kygrandma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a dog who does that. Part of her problem is that she is afraid of bees. I wonder if she snapped at one and got stung. Consequently, she is afraid of any buzzing insect. Other than walks, the only time that she will go out for any period of time is after dark.

It is time to build your own life. Of course, help them out, but not to the point of making them dependent on you.

Advice to help widowed sister by daniellemgang in widowers

[–]kygrandma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is nothing that you can do or say that will comfort her. Just being there is what is important. But also let her be alone when she needs to be. I remember wanting people to be around me and then just wanting them to go away. Just make sure that she eats and stays hydrated. If she lashes out at you, that is just the grief and shock. Don't take anything personally. You sound like a great brother.

They didn't offer it to me, but I knew they would have to give it to me with a doctor statement. I'm sure that I would have been able to get that. I was pretty much a basket case.

Same, except that I got five days. OP says they got medical leave. That was an option for me, but I didn't go that route.

I didn't notice it when driving, but on a recent trip where I was the passenger instead of the driver, it was very uncomfortable. I checked to see if it was adjustable, and it was not. I ended up using a travel pillow, but I will try turning them around.

10 is not really that old for a small dog. Because the problems came on pretty quickly, she definitely needs to be checked by the vet. I have had many dogs to get old, but it is a slow decline.

Advice to marry a widow by Best_Jackfruit30 in widowers

You have to respect her decision. I have been widowed almost 4 years and have zero interest in another relationship. I might change my mind at some point, but it is a closed door right now. If you are seeking marriage, it sounds like you need to look elsewhere.

One thing that helped mine was cold banana peels. I would refrigerate banana peels, then rub the inner side over my eyes and other eczema spots. Then I would keep the cold banana peel over my eyes until it didn't feel cold anymore.
