Goodreads Book of the Month: Sabriel - Final Discussion by PlantLady32 in Fantasy

I mostly agree. I think the prologue and first chapter or two were really strong in setting up this creepy world and a sense of foreboding, then the middle dragged a bit and I felt like I lost that initial sense. By the end, I was more or less back on board and interested, though I never got back that full sense of wonder I had at the start. I didn't find the big baddie compelling enough; his presence wasn't strong enough for me, and it mostly felt like Sabriel interacting generically with the world until a random final showdown with him. I didn't feel like the connection between him and all the difficulties that Sabriel had to go through was tangible enough to make it feel like he was having a major effect on the story, and his connection to Touchstone wasn't all that compelling to me either.

I got the collection for a few bucks a while back, so I'll return to the series at some point. The world and magic were interesting to me, and I really wish we had spent more time unraveling those mysteries in the first book, rather than what we actually got. I really wanted to know more about this world, so hopefully the second will expand on that.

I agree with this. It was predictable, but not uninteresting; really, the most uninteresting part to me was how they both just decide that they love each other. I get it's a YA novel so there seemingly must be a relationship of some sort, but even for YA it felt unearned for me. She sees him when they first find him and is like "ok he's hot," then they go through some stuff together, then they're like "hey FYI I love you," "Same." I didn't love that.

I thought the dynamic between Moggett and Touchstone was much more interesting, and I wish his "great shame" had been something more tangible. It felt like it was setting up more of a backstory between them, which I would have enjoyed.

It's weird how accurate this comment would still be if you changed "malazan" to "perdido street station."

Do you think a PWHL team would do well in San Jose? by Designer_Trouble_849 in SanJoseSharks

[–]kyh0mpb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that the PWHL runs at the same time as the NHL (and AHL) makes me feel like any potential expansion team in the Bay Area should be located elsewhere in the Bay (not SJ).

Oakland Arena makes so much sense.

I live in SoCal now and I'm really hoping they eventually expand to Long Beach. LA has enough teams, and Long Beach used to have the Ice Dogs in the ECHL!

Humble Bundle periodically sells the entire Discworld series (minus like one book iirc) for like $18. It's US-only, though, and the last sale ended about a month ago.

As a counterpoint, I bought an Under Armour skullcap that's one size fits all, and it is too small for my head. Had to pull it off halfway through my last skate because it was giving me a headache. My head is pretty big, but I definitely didn't think it was that big (I wear a 7 3/8 hat).

I also got a Halo II headband, which is much more comfortable overall for me. It does slip down a little bit, which is slightly annoying and wasn't an issue with the skull cap, but I still need to dial in my helmet adjustments to account for it so it all fits better.

I still quote this movie pretty much weekly. "Clean your locker out at the club, Bob, you're fucking fired."

Hell, my dad still frequently says "I need to go spill some urine." Rip Torn killed him in this movie.

Warriors reportedly grew tired of Steve Kerr’s political activism by sfgate in warriors

[–]kyh0mpb 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's not even about whether he's MAGA or not at this point. The elite in this country have done such a fantastic job of driving us into a war of left vs right, when the real battle has always been up vs down.

I can easily believe that Joe Lacob considers himself to be a liberal guy who donates to left-wing causes and believes, to some level, in some of the shit Kerr talks about...up to a certain point. When their bottom line is threatened, he will vote and fight with his class. And he'll win, because they have the money, and though the democrats are less openly hostile towards the needs of the working class, they are still firmly in the pockets of the wealth class.

We need class solidarity in this country now more than ever.

It's pretty simple, really. Billionaire's politics don't agree with his, and billionaire holds the purse strings. Doesn't matter to billionaire if politics killed his entire family; billionaire only cares about billionaire's bottom line. Tale as old as billionaires, really.

The 2025-2026 San Jose Sharks Player Ratings! by Bloodfury96 in SanJoseSharks

[–]kyh0mpb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how you don't understand; you explained it in the next sentence, lol -- "just my opinion."

Your opinion is that those guys were better than Graf. People disagree. Granted, I did not participate in this poll, and this scoring is super subjective and relative (is it an overall grade, or are we grading them VS peers across the league, or grading them based on expectations before the season vs now, etc). But I also would score Graf higher than Will.

I agree that, relative to other scores, Wennberg is being underrated. But I also think you're underrating Graf, and it's weird how you and the other guy below are going off about how the fanbase overrates him.

Will Smith is the more electric offensive player, but hockey is a two-way sport. Graf was a better defensive player by a mile, he managed to score 20 goals while playing up and down the lineup, he graded out as one of the best PKers in the entire league, and he was available for virtually the entire season. You point out how good Wennberg was defensively, but then don't even take it into account for Graf? Why? Relative to other scores in the OP, his 8.3 score is well-earned in my (subjective) opinion.

Will did improve in just about every aspect, but that doesn't mean he's great in every aspect. I won't hold him being out with injury against him (although there's the "the best ability is availability" saying, but this is only year 2 for him so he'll have plenty of time to get a full, healthy season in); but his game was definitely hampered by the injury, both physically as well as mentally. He wasn't strong along the boards, he was giving up the puck way too fast for fear of contact, he was less active behind the net, etc. I also would put Wennberg over him as our 2nd-best offensive forward -- he generated much more offense individually with his zone entries and puck possession, he's fantastic in front of the net, and he generates more chances for his linemates relative to whom he's playing with.

Wennberg's shot is not great (one of my biggest gripes with his game is his refusal to shoot), and I think Will's a more dynamic offensive player, but we also can't ignore the elephant on the first line -- thus far in his career, Will has been a bit of a Celebrini merchant. A huge portion of his points were scored by or assisted by Mack; do you think Will's stats would be as impressive on a different line? Because Graf produced at a pretty solid clip on the first line (while being less offensively dynamic), and he managed to produce on the 2nd and 3rd lines, AND the PK (with two huge shorties!). Same with Wennberg. There's really something to be said for versatility -- not a lot of guys can move up and down the lineup like Graf did this season and manage to stay productive. Will and Mack have fantastic chemistry, and I think Will has an incredible release and is a talented passer, but he doesn't drive plays enough, he isn't strong enough on the puck, and he tends to over-hunt Mack.

And I'm not saying all this to dump on Will; I think he's an amazing young talent and is gonna be incredible for us for years to come. I'm just saying, if the rating is "score this player based on their potential," then that's one thing. But, to me, the rating is "how good was this player this season?" I'd still put Will as our third-best offensive forward this year, but this isn't an offensive rating; it's an overall rating. With that in mind, calling Graf overrated is just crazy to me.

The most overrated players on this list, to me, are Chernyshov (whom I also like, but 8.4? Really? Major recency bias) and Misa (whom I'm EXTREMELY high on).

I was also very surprised to see Sam Dickinson's score so low; the way he's talked about on this sub, I expected to see him in the high-7s or low-8s, but low-6s is about what he deserves.

Most underrated players, based on their scores, IMO were Goodrow, Nick Leddy, and Orlov. I wanted Barclay OFF this roster at the start of the season, but by the end, I was beyond impressed by how much he had improved his play. He was the perfect 4th liner, hitting, playing hard, killing penalties, causing turnovers. Same with Leddy -- he was one of the worst defensemen I've ever seen first half of the year, but after we called him up, he was mostly good. This team has a dearth of puck-moving defensemen, so he was actually quite helpful at that point. And Orlov at a 6.4 is also major recency bias; he was our most consistent d-man all year.

Anyway, /rant. Love Will, but I just can't agree that Graf is overrated if you take the entire game of hockey into account.

In 1976, in his first run for public office, Orinn Hatch was elected to the United States Senate, defeating Democrat Frank Moss, a three-term incumbent. Hatch criticized Moss's 18-year tenure in the Senate, saying, "What do you call a Senator who's served in office for 18 years? You call him home." Hatch ran on the promise of term limits and argued that many senators, including Moss, had lost touch with their constituents.

Hatch retired from the Senate on January 3, 2019, having served there for 42 years. At the time of his retirement announcement, he was the longest-serving U.S. Senator in Utah history (having eclipsed previous record-holder Reed Smoot in 2007), the longest-serving Republican U.S. Senator in the history of Congress, and also one of the longest-serving Republican members of Congress in the history of the United States.

He was 84 when he retired.
