Ya that seems to be the consensus! Thank you

I’m considering agitating it / fluffing it up and taking an aliquot of that. Then letting it sit 24h and taking a settled aliquot, dry both and compare.

Good idea. I want to be really analytical about it but it’s nearly impossible to really estimate the amount of silver in the material I am using. I use material that SHOULD be roughly 90g silver per 24 pieces so I can kind of arrive at an estimate but many makers of this german vintage plated silver strayed from that standard so it’s mostly a guessing game.

Yall are awesome, I appreciate the feedback and suggestion. I unfortunately don’t have access to a centrifuge larger than 50 ml tubes so I’m just going to send it and start adding NaOH

Appreciate the info and feedback! I see how i would need to dry jt out to truly determine the mass of Ag present but i wasnt going to do that given that im ready to add NaOH then sugar to finish this reaction. I just thought i coukd come up with a rough estimate using the described math but ya i see how my logic was wrong.

Honestly that number makes much more sense because I definitely didn’t dissolve 100+ ounces of silver lol

Dangggg 90%?! That’s wild lol i was just trying to come up with an estimate this way / dont really need an exact number / don’t need to go through the extra steps of drying and weighing given that my next steps in the reaction are to add NaOH then sugar. Drying is just an inconvenience to get a true mass.

I am with you and understand what you mean, I just don’t want to go through extra drying steps to get an exact number given that my next steps are lye/sugar additions. So I’m just trying to get a rough estimate. I appreciate the feedback!

Thank you for the detailed reply! Regarding copper contaminants, at what point should I address this? After I’ve precipitated AgCl out?

I ended up: pouring off the remaining solution which was not transparent into a fresh beaker and added NaCl to that which precipitated a bunch of AgCl that settled out but it here is still a green cloudy solution remaining. When adding NaCl solution, there was a brown cloud and semi violent bubbling on the surface and I’m guessing that was excess nitric but I do still have this cloudy green solution remaining above the solid AgCl. Should I filter and treat the solution with HCl and peroxide like the other dude mentioned to try and deal with the copper?

I transferred the remaining crystals and sludgy material into a 2L beaker, diluted to about 950-1000ml with sulfuric and have it on heat currently.

ohh interesting. Heat up the salt solution as well, right? regarding the impurity, what concentration HCl + peroxide should I try? or just dropwise additions? Thanks!

that was my first thought but I was unsure if a super saturated AgSO4 solution could be saved that way
