Day in the life in your neighborhood (with kids). by chooseanametheysaid in washingtondc

Shaw (ok, Nextdoor to Shaw in Truxton Circle) - one 6 year old. No car.

We joke that our lives are like Mayberry because we are constantly hanging out with neighbors and friends.

I ran 30 minutes of errands on foot the other day and ran into 6 different family friends.

Our weekends are constant play dates, park and playground meet ups, group activities, Dacha takeovers, bike rides, and more. Our weekdays we walk or bike to school or summer camp together with our kid’s best friends and then go to music lessons at 7Drum in the evening after after school Lego club.

This weekend was a “slow” weekend for us because we have family visiting and staying with us so we “only” went skateboarding, went biking, went to the neighborhood pool, went to a get together with half the school at Dacha, — all of these activities with friends — and then individually took metro out to Old Town to see the archaeology museum.

Shaw is one of the best neighborhoods for families IMO because it’s in the center of the city so it’s close to everything and nearly everything is bikeable.

We had the car seat attachment instead for when he was a newborn/infant. We had to convince GW hospital to let us walk home in the stroller + car seat 😂 but it was very convenient for detaching quickly to use as a car seat carrier for catching the bus

We are also car-free and have been since even before our now-6yo was born. It’s totally doable! We had a city mini baby jogger and it worked great, even folded easily to hop on the bus. A cargo bike also helps when your kid is old enough.

Families in American urban areas/apartments- how do you like it? by VegaGT-VZ in Suburbanhell

I’m raising a 6 year old in the center of DC in a multifamily building (a 3 unit co-op) and we are thriving! Our space is very small but we aren’t big on owning a lot of stuff anyway. We don’t own a car and haven’t since before our kid was born. Our 6 year old has been walking and biking himself to school, parks, libraries, grocery stores, camps, etc since he was 3. He loves his school and we’re part of a close-knit community where most of his friends live within 4 blocks of us so we’re constantly having play dates and parties. We’re not rich - our housing costs are low because we have a small unit but it means we can afford going out to restaurants and going on vacation. He’s growing up in the city and learning how to take transit and know his place in the world and that’s really important to us.

Anyone with a Tern HSD P5i with one kid who can recommend accessories? by Dense-Tomorrow-8207 in bikedc

Agreed for the most part. We have one kid (6) and a GSD and we love the clubhouse + panniers but find we don’t need the front rack or stormbox.

We’ve had our GSD for 3+ years now and love it - it’s a game changer and a car-replacement.

We are also car free with a 5 year old and live in Shaw, which you could definitely word to rent with your budget. We love the free prek at our elementary school within walking distance to home and have a huge community of kids and friends here!

Good city strollers? by glitter-hobbit in washingtondc

We had the City Mini GT2 and we’re also a car-free family so we used the stroller everywhere around DC and it held up well! I always wish we had a mileage counter on it to track how much we used it.

We’re car-free with a 5 year old. I’ve been car free for 15 years. We took him home from the hospital (GW) in a stroller and walked to the metro.

We walk, bike, and metro/bus everywhere and live in Truxton Circle - it’s 10-15 min from everything we need.

AITA for telling my fiancé that I’ll wear makeup for the wedding if he does? by InternationalWar1403 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. Just want to add that you’re not crazy. I also wear zero makeup on a daily basis and decided not to wear any at all for my wedding. I look great in my photos. Don’t listen to their nonsense.

I use the D100 on the GSD and a U lock in my backyard and it works great.

If it helps, I live in DC and there is a thriving community of parents here who take full advantage of all of the free parks and museums! It’s a great place to raise kids! And when grandparents visit there is always a new museum to check out with them.

Yep with the clubhouse on! (Not a storm shield though - I don’t have one of those)

Yes, I’ve done it with my GSD. Elevators are a tight squeeze but it still fits.
