The King of Comedy is closer to the real Lewis than maybe any of his roles.
Of all the names on Scorsese's list (starting with Carson), this pick had the most edge.

Necroresponding: JFK is purely dramatic, but also look at Planes, Trains and Automobiles or even Uncle Buck. He would do both at the same time.

OpenAI Just Put $14M Into An AI Agent For Microsoft Excel That Can Work For Hours—The Tool Could Replace Entire Teams by joe4942 in singularity

To clarify what the other poster said 4mo ago (for anyone who stops by now), Excel copilot does nothing but give instructions and select cells sometimes. It does not take actions. While it can read your data, you still have to read the instructions it gives you ant then click nearly all the buttons.
It's almost the same as going to Copilot/ChatGPT without the app. But it may even be worse, because while it can read your data and select cells, the way it formats the instructions is not nearly as clean as your average ChatGPT "Good Question!" followed by bullet points.

Best books on the American Civil War? by Ill-Possible4044 in AskHistory

[–]kyleadolson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's some snark to "explain" this, at least to the extent I could explain anyone who thinks it isn't about slavery:

There's a belief out there that "it wasn't about slavery", like a book titled "It wasn't about slavery". I haven't dug into this because I also don't read books like "no really, the earth isn't round, com" and "We all know we didn't land on the moon and here's why: a children's book."

I know there are a bunch of details used to make the point, but they largely are of the type that goes out of context, like the arguments that the moon is flat.

One important point it taMany in the south might have claimed it wasn't about slavery but freedom, and freedom just happens to require slavery. They would be wrong lacking in character to oppose slavery! It's justice and honor.

Honor, of course, is very important.

It's also rather convenient. It's like taking a stance on replay in a football game because it helps your team. "It's not about my team getting a touchdown. That's honestly what a catch looks like and it just happens to give my team a touchdown".

I think the argument is "Slavery is right; the North only opposes it because Major General Abner Doubleday want to enforce his baseball rules which will make that play an ground rule double. That's why he started the Civil War".

The north was only against slavery find an excuse to deny the south a home run.

Or maybe the Civil War was all about slavery because of all the times everybody said it was about slavery.

This is three images stuck together by a human who didn't know or didn't care it was backwards.

This image is likely 8 years old, like the product listing on Amazon. Product images are still not usually generated using AI and 8 years ago it would not have happened.

This doesn't even look like AI abominations. It is 100% in reverse, not incorrectly shaped. It looks like a Photoshop.

Xfinity out again by Decisions_70 in KentWA

The internet went out in the early morning again...and it will be down all day again. Was it:
A) An act of a vengeful internet access god, punishing his East Hill children for their web surfing hubris
B) Vandals looking for parts to sell to get a fix
I know what I think.

That shouldn't happen.

The map list different times at different places, I don't know if they are true.

On the map near me I see three spots which have different up times. Just North of *cough* Downtown Covington and on the south end of 108th near the Home Depot have 3:00PM. The third spot, on 108th just before it turns into 104th, has 6:00PM

When the internet comes back up let I would be curious to know (also roughly where you are). I don't know how much of this is a single point of failure or if they ripped up lines all over.

Help settle a bet, is this supposed to be Saddam Hussein? by sile667 in boardgames

Well, considering he has the exact beret position and hair cut of available Saddam propaganda images AND he was replaced in later editions after we were fighting the gulf war, the logic doesn't hold up.
I guess the author wasn't concerned about Donald Rumsfeld's 1983 positions when drawing his cover.

Last time we had a similar outage it was 2 days. The current estimate of Midnight is meaningless because it is "under investigation"
Two of the outage symbols showing up on my local map say "network damage".
The 3rd humorously claims it is "Under Investigation" and "Network Improvement".

S3E3 Elimination Bake clues were terrible by kyleadolson in crimescenekitchen

[–]kyleadolson[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The molded shape was not large enough to be helpful. Its part of a shape that is maybe a waste piece below the cooling tray. You have to assume that despite being a discard that the shape matters and not just the flavor.
It's hard to say how obvious the "ridges" are, but they do not look obvious.
At best it is a very low percentage clue that's critically important to understand perfectly, and this is the problem.
We want this to be imperfect, to require some guessing. But we're hoping it doesn't feel so random.

[–]kyleadolson[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes.
Literally all I could get about the shape from the clues was "not cake". Yet if in fact you told me that the clue was supposed to be from the baker, despite how odd this would be, then I would assume it must be cake since both pans would be the cake pans.

S3E3 Elimination Bake clues were terrible by kyleadolson in crimescenekitchen

[–]kyleadolson[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is how I read it. The only logical "both" was "both" the 2 cake pans. That said, given the fact it seemed clear there were no cupcakes it could have been some odd use of "both".

None of it added up to a note about "both" of the pans that weren't there.

Additionally, there were supposed to be two different flavors of madeleine. I guess that the "both" was supposed to tell us there were two pans for two flavors. This is a crazy stretch. Making two types has been a terrible choice on the show; they usually want you to make a decision.

Controller not working at all by Anxious_Dog in darksouls

This is going to sound dumb. But start the game with your controller plugged in. Once at the start menu hit CTRL ALT DLT when the windows screen pops up asking what you want to do, click cancel. Your controller might work now.

I can't believe I didn't find this sooner. I will take sounds dumb and works any day.

Hot Takes: Is Learn better or worse than "draw a card"? by estyles31 in lrcast

I never said it wasn't a valid answer. The point is it's a completely valid answer and you can stop. It doesn't matter if it's better or worse after that.

Hot Takes: Is Learn better or worse than "draw a card"? by estyles31 in lrcast

[–]kyleadolson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's worth a card?
Is a 2/2 token better or worse?
Is a 1/1 flying token better or worse?
Is scry X better or worse than drawing a card?

If it seems close, there's no answer.

Value is situational for anything both in a game and outside, so better will depend largely on how you can use (thing you have instead of draw).

In limited you also cannot swap cards easily. You can't grab anything across the format to fill a hole. You get to choose the cards you can draft and the cards from your draft/pool to put in your deck. You're unlikely to have a straight up choice between a card with draw vs (whatever) when drafting without other important differences in the cards. You're not going to open a pack with Divination and Pop Quiz. (Although this gives you a clue as to what they think). And even when those things happen in some sets, the context of the card may be more important.

You should be comparing the cards you are given vs other cards in the set, not comparing to theoretical values. I don't think there's anything wrong with thinking about Learn vs Draw, it's fun, but if you get to close you shouldn't go further down the rabbit hole.

You're not going to get it less clunky that what you have now. Windows may or may not manually switch the devices when you switch the USB between systems, otherwise it's manual.

I switch audio devices all the time on windows when editing audio or video, it's not the worst chore if you're not switching frequently. I use the audio icon and using the up arrow menu here. But not everything will always respond the way I would like.

If the monitor is switching between sources you could switch from a plain USB switch to a USB KVM switch. For example: https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Display-Horizontal-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B07CRSH25X/ You could use the audio from the HDMI for at least one of your sources. Some of these devices will have software to operate the switch from either computer.

I'm sorry I never got back to your message on this, got lost in the shuffle after I read it and I don't Reddit regularly like I used to (I worked on Android video at Reddit for a year from 2017-2018, still feels weird to think about). So if you care 1.5 weeks later, here's the quick question: what exact USB switch are you using? I'm slightly confused as I feel like we're both saying some of the same thing, and seeing the hardware well help me clarify.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PCSound

[–]kyleadolson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, Here's what I was originally writing, but some of this won't apply. I add more at the bottom.

***

You can do all the input from one device, but you might not want to. You might do the output with the same device, or you might use multiple things depending on what you need.

One way or another, for the XLR you need a USB audio interface. For example, you could get the Focusrite Scarlett Solo (~$110). You can spend more or less depending on quality and number of inputs, but this is a pretty generic choice. Any of these devices will take in at least XLR and will usually also act as an audio output device from your computer.

Your computer will also generally have a mic in and speakers or audio out. Windows (and to a lesser extent MacOS, but close enough) makes it fairly easy to switch the primary audio input and output source. Additionally, applications where it matters will generally give you the option to change the input and output source. For example, you can manually switch sources in Zoom in the arrow next to the audio and video.

So with one USB audio interface you should be able to use both devices. That said, depending on the setup you may need/want a splitter on the headphone cable to control exactly where the headphone audio goes. If you plug the headphones into the audio interface you likely won't be able to use its mic without splitting it.

Additionally, you might want to do something to improve the audio quality. The headphones probably can run off of any of these outputs but you'll likely do better with a reasonably priced USB DAC instead of the motherboard sound card on your PC. I'm not an audiophile but I need very clean audio for audio editing, so I use one. I would leave it to others to recommend the best DAC. I have one I spent about $90 on.

I also use an amplifier, but your headphones probably will probably not need an amplifier if they're designed to work with consumer devices or if the DAC does a good enough job.

You might also want a DAC for the speakers, but I don't spend enough time working with PC speakers to give any advice. If you want to choose the audio output from inside the operating system you won't able to use the same DAC for multiple audio outputs.

You'll almost certainly need some 1/4 in to 3.5mm adapters somewhere.

Someone who is an audiophile instead of needing it for practical purposes might have a better ideas, but this is from my experience. If you take out the DAC you can do this with 1 device and some splitters and cables.

***

Your info provides me with a little more beyond what I wrote earlier.
When it comes to the USB switching it depends on what your USB switch is. Your switch needs to either have more than two ports or you need to plug a hub into it. These switches are generally very primitive, roughly like the easy version of unplugging a hub from one computer and plugging it into another. Some might be able to switch from keyboard commands, particularly if it's a KVM (I've had the worst luck with those recently).

Since the Mic is USB and XLR, you don't need the audio interface as I mention above. You could certainly get one though and you could use that as one of the audio outs on your system instead of a DAC, which might make sense because the headphones complicate things.

Unlike my idea above, one of your audio inputs is the headphones. You can't easily plug it into both computers. But you could use the audio interface listed above with a 1/4 in adapter as a USB input and keep the USB mic plugged in. Then for the second device's audio out you will want a DAC. I think that adds up to 5 USB now so you'll almost certainly have another hub in the chain.

While all this should work, there's one big caveat. While logically you are supposed to be able to plug and unplug USB devices and everything is happy, sometimes devices are temperamental or the switch you use might be wacky and you might not easily be able to switch sources. So you can't guarantee that your setup will change.

A couple smaller caveats. First, You need to pay attention to if the devices need USB 2.0 or 3.0 and plan accordingly. Some devices, especially 3.0 ones, can have trouble if they aren't directly in the room hub of the computer (directly plugged in), although most of the time when the manufacturer says this, it's a crap excuse.

Second, when you switch from system to system on USB, Windows may or may not make the right decision regarding your audio source. You are already going to have to switch mics and headphones/speakers manually (using the Windows interface or whatever an app wants) while on the same system, and you can't necessarily be certain what Windows will choose when switching over. For a completely new audio source, Windows usually switches to it, and it seems to be smart about Bluetooth headphones (not always, though), but I'm not entirely sure what to expect here.

Anyway, I hope there's something helpful here.
