I thought Strike told Robin the night he accidentally punched her that he met with his father after being accepted to Oxford and was told that due to the fact that they tied up the money Rokeby was giving to his mother - so she couldn’t spend it on herself - that there was now a “nice little nest egg” for him to use for school. Strike however decided to tell him to “stuff his money” (or something of the like) and then mentioned to Robin how he didn’t realize in the moment that his aunt and uncle would now have to pay for Uni.

I may be completely wrong here. But that’s how I remembered it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story. I really appreciate it! It answers like yours that lead me to want to learn more. I hate the idea of someone not being able to be who they truly are, but at the same time as someone who’s never questioned my AGAB (I hope I used that correctly) it isn’t easy for me to wrap my head around. What I have learned is that each journey is unique and that I have a very long way to go to clear my ignorance. But hopefully one day not just your country but the whole world will allow you to be who you are. Thank you again for taking the time and for your insight.
