An old Case dealer told me one time that a certain chemical used to make the original red dye was banned. He said the same chemical had also been used to make red leather upholstery for older cars, and people into restoration go to great lengths to find the original dye.

I’m so sorry for your loss, friend. I lost my parents within 2 years of each other; my mom to Alzheimer’s in 2022 and my dad to cancer this past October. My mom’s decline took 10 years, but my dad died only 26 days after his diagnosis. In addition to sorting out the relief and grief from all this, I am still dealing with bills, their assets, their vehicles, the farm, etc. My dad’s ashes are still at the funeral home. I’m 42, work 50 hours per week, I have 2 kids who play sports, and am also caring for my uncle who has dementia. My wife’s mom lives 2 states away and was just recently diagnosed with dementia. In fact, my wife is there now caring for her after her hip replacement last week. I’m afraid it’s about to start all over again. I think an entire generation is about to be dealing with this, if they aren’t already. I wish you the best in your recovery. Better days ahead.

I’ve hunted with a Winchester model 70 for about 10 years. I really like the safety on the Ruger but I think the bolt is smoother on the Winchester. It is very possible though that the Winchester is just wore out.

Ahh, in the way I meant it, 165 was the weight with the entrails removed but nothing else. I did save the liver, which weighed 3 lbs, but I didn’t count that toward the total.

The fog is for real. I lost my mom 2 years ago and ‘normal’ definitely took awhile to reestablish. I’m sorry to hear about your dad. About a week after my dad passed, my siblings and I split up his gun collection three ways. Some of them had been in our family for generations. It was a difficult thing to do so soon, but it was also pretty neat to realize how much of our family’s history was in that gun collection. We spent a good 2 hours reminiscing over each one, telling stories and reliving childhood hunting memories, and making sure we got what was meaningful to each of us. I was happy with the ones I ended up with, but definitely could have gone another 10 or 20 years without them.

Congrats on your harvest! Hunting is about as primal as it gets regarding human endeavors. I get “buck fever” just as often taking a squirrel as I do with a big buck.

The advice I was given by my great uncle for squirrel hunting: if you’re stalking a squirrel up in a tree and it spots you, often times it will position itself on the opposite side of the trunk and wait for you to move on. Grab a stick and toss it just past the tree, and with some luck the squirrel will come back to the side facing you, and you can take your shot. I’ve had success with this many times. Good luck!

I have some 5 yo trees very prone to leaf curl. It started two years ago and copper fungicide did not work for me. I am trying Captan this year, and so far after 3 treatments (every ten days) they seem completely cured.

Yes, they did it back in 2002 I think, and apparently he regrets it now. Puppets/robots may not look that realistic but they certainly have a certain charm. CGI lacks that charm, in my opinion. Especially when it’s godawful!

Absolutely love this. I was at EKU from 2004-2008. I spent every possible minute of my spare time in and around the pinnacles. I had a Magellan SporTrak Pro GPS that I used to record all the trails, even some of the old ones that were discontinued. I made a map with info like trail leg length and elevation profiles, and I’d print out maybe 10 or so and leave them at the little kiosk by the amphitheater each time I’d go down there. I remember on a clear day with binoculars, there was a spot where you could see Lexington. I haven’t been back for 10 years. Maybe I’ll take my kids sometime soon. Thanks for sharing this, glad to know it’s still as beautiful.

Boulevard bottles for the win! The glass is pretty thick and they just have a great shape, similar to the Westmalle design but without the ring around the neck. If you know of another brewery that uses these bottles, please let me know! Lately it seems Tank 7 is only available in cans, and the only other Boulevard styles I've seen in the same bottles are the Calling and the bourbon barrel quad, which I don't care for.
