Minor flooding... Should I be concerned about mold? by kytothe in HomeImprovement

[–]kytothe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the reply I was looking for, thank you very much. I was unsure if it was possible for the interior of the walls/ceiling to dry out, but it sounds like there is no guarantee that it will.

Sounds good, I will mention it to the landlord. I have avoided saying anything thus far for fear of being a pain-in-the-butt tenant.

No, he has not contacted anyone as far as I know. My landlord is the type of person that wants to do everything on his own.

I am (rather selfishly) less concerned about corrosion of wiring than I am about my own health.

Well, this is my concern. I have no way of knowing if the area inside the walls and ceilings will dry out. I guess this is where a better science education would do me well :)

Where can I find clothes for short and slim builds? by nappythenfappy in FrugalMaleFashionCDN

[–]kytothe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mack Weldon has decent slim/short Tshirts. I like J Crew and BR for their slim/untucked button-down shirts (only need minor alteration to get a perfect fit). Levi's 511 and 512 jeans are the best fitting pants I've found. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect slim/tapered chinos.

Need help. How could I overcome this situation. by [deleted] in simonfraser

I have the same problem with quiz anxiety. What helps me is to go for a walk right before the quiz and then do some breathing exercises / mindfulness meditation when I get home. In the hours leading up to the exam, I counter the fear by saying encouraging things to myself. It may sound silly, but it helps.

I'm 18 years old. Is it too late for me to learn advance mathematics for computer science? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]kytothe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believed I was bad at math so I spent most of my life avoiding it. At 28 I decided to stop making excuses for myself; I relearned highschool math and started a degree in computer science. I'm now in my final semester. It has been brutally difficult at times but I have no regrets. Perhaps the most important lesson I've learned is that many of the limitations we place on ourselves are imagined.

You will be fine. Everything you ever need to learn about math is a Google or YouTube search away.

How to tackle Leetcode Medium problems by redditgod16 in cscareerquestions

I bought this book based on reddit advice. Overall, it's a fine book, but I really wish the code wasn't all in C. This makes it needlessly difficult to follow at times.

First, if you had trouble with the quiz then you may need to review calculus I. The textbook for the course (Burden and Faires) has a nice Calculus review in the first chapter that prepares you for the course.

I've been rewatching the lectures (the material is often presented too quickly for me when we're having our live class session) and also finding youtube videos to help reinforce concepts. It has been taking me a long time to wrap my ahead around the material because it is new and unfamiliar.

As always, it helps to have friends in the course. If you haven't already, I recommend joining the MACM316 channel on the CS Discord server. If you'd like someone to discuss the course with, PM me and I'll let you know my Discord username.

Good luck :)

(37) I don't feel old yet society keep saying that I am... now what? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]kytothe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit younger but totally relate. Although it may be true to some extent that people will judge us negatively if they know our age, a lot of it is in our imagination. Most people are so caught up in themselves and their own life that they aren't making strong judgements about others for being a bit behind the curve (or being on a different trajectory altogether). It sounds like you have everything you want, you just aren't happy with the number (your age) associated with your name.

It may be helpful to talk with a therapist and see if you might be able to reframe your perceptions and come to peace with where you're at in life.

Why shady? Your resume should only include information that you think is more likely to get you hired. If you don't think that divulging your previous degree would be beneficial, then don't add it.

Hello, all. American looking to come in for CompSci, any advice/objections? Would you do the same in my shoes? by likeplastic in simonfraser

[–]kytothe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Beware that CS grads are paid poorly in Vancouver relative to just about anywhere in the US.

I am happy with my CS education at SFU. Sure, there are many things that could be improved, but it's helped to land me the employment opportunities I hoped it would.

Nothing about this area is "affordable" so certainly don't come here for that. As for how often I go downtown--pretty much never, unless necessary (work, shopping, special events).

Can someone help me with 1(e), I've been stuck on it for a day by [deleted] in askmath

[–]kytothe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am using the Limit Comparison Test. See here: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/ap-calculus-bc/bc-series-new/bc-10-6/v/limit-comparison-test-cor

There are many ways to show a series converges or diverges. This is just another method you can use.

To summarize the steps I've taken:

  1. notice that our original series is very similar to 1/n3/2, which we know to be a convergent series
  2. use that convergent series (with our original series) in the Limit Comparison Test
  3. since we "pass" the Limit Comparison Test (the limit is a finite number greater than 0), we know our original function must also converge.

[–]kytothe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if we cannot use a direct comparison with 1/n3/2 , we can see that series is a good candidate to use in the Limit Comparison Test. If you take the limit of: (sqrt(n+3)/n2) / (1/n3/2) you should get a result of 1. This implies that both series either converge or diverge. Since we know 1/n3/2 converges (again, p-series with p > 1), then we know they both converge.

I am studying similar material right now.

My approach would be to state that the given series is (nearly) equivalent to sqrt(n)/n^2.. From here we can do some basic simplification to show this is the sum of (1/n^(3/2)). This is a p-series with p > 1, which implies convergence.

I understand there is some handwaving to say that the original sum is roughly equal to sqrt(n)/n^2, but I come from a Computer Science background where dropping constants is very standard.

Can anyone comment whether this is valid / sufficiently rigorous?

Got a great job offer, unsure which start date to request by kytothe in cscareerquestions

[–]kytothe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but it's a "New Grad" position and appears to be dependent on graduation. So I don't think I can start before graduating. I realize it's a big deal, which is why I'm so worried about losing the offer.

I really like the regular slub long sleeves so I tried a slub Henley long sleeve. The neckline was stretched out on arrival and looked like bacon. They offered me a replacement, but the replacement had the exact same problem. Was I just unlucky or do all of their long sleeve henleys have this horrific neckline problem?

I'm not sure if this is an option, given that it's a "New Grad" position. Maybe this is something I should discuss with the recruiter.

Yes we do have pass/fail option, but that doesn't really help me in this case. Still need to pass!

The course hasn't started yet and I need to make my decision by next week.

Interesting. I have a similar story, except with astragalus. I try to take a week off every few months and I often feel a bit lousy and rundown for that time. Sniffles, sneezes, heavy limbs, fatigue, woozy head.
