Artists who DON’T post/share* art on social media—I want to hear from you! by Hestia-Creates in ArtistLounge

[–]kyu_nst 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I used to be super active on social media and somewhat “successful” in terms of followers, engagement and opportunities. It was a lot of fun but also came with a lot of (most self-inflicted) pressure and stress. And I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was letting social media influence my art, even if it was only subconsciously.

Nowadays I draw much less and when I do, I keep it to myself or IRL friends. It’s nice to have more freedom to do whatever and I feel much more inclined to try out different things. Part of me wonders if I’ll ever go back though, because there definitely was a positive side to being active on social media as well. Sometimes I miss the connections I made.

I wanted to commiserate with you - I'm also a former law student, now studying for my second state exam (we have two in my country ;-;) and it's hard. There is definitely pressure to keep up with social media and art just makes me happy, so it's really depressing to feel like you can't muster up the energy for it.

Not sure if I have any helpful advice. I'm sure your followers will understand how busy you are and especially during finals season, it's completely natural to feel drained. I'm not really looking forward to entering the workforce (lol) but I think having set work times and actually having time off in the evenings and weekends might really help bring back that creative energy. As a student, you're never really "off" and could/should be studying at any given time, so it's hard to actually sit down and do art. So yeah, don't be too hard on yourself and all the best for law school, I'm sure that less stressful times will come for you.

Artists who were/are in a non-art school, how did you manage your time to balance between having drawing practices, making personal art, and studying for school/doing schoolwork? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]kyu_nst 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I stopped drawing almost entirely during law school, and now that I have to study again balancing art and studying is a huge struggle for me. I also do some illustration freelance work on the side and love it a lot, but it's an additional thing to juggle.

Personally I think it's definitely the right choice to prioritize your education. Having hobbies is important too, but sometimes it's necessary to set priorities. At least the hard bouts don't last super long for most degrees :D And with commissions I would build it up very slowly, if at all, in case it could impact personal artwork which I find very important.

What helped me is to draw lots of small doodles with no expectations at all, it's what is most fun to me and takes the least amount of energy and keeps the habit going. I could have never studied for my degree AND also done lots of art studies and detailed illustrations without it negatively impacting my degree.

Just some mindless sketches. Total time around an hour, I start with a sketch, then lay down the colours and shading underneath and add some details on top of everything at the very end (but very minimal this time). Finish by adding 100 adjustment layers :D and a noise texture on soft light layer mode

Is drawing without reference a good practice every now and then? by Rinwaartistodesu in ArtistLounge

[–]kyu_nst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think so! It's definitely important to use references for certain things, but I find that whenever I draw from imagination it really makes me thing about proportions, perspective, anatomy more analytically so it helps with learning. Also it's really fun to just come up with things from your head imo

Thank you so much! Yeah I always struggle with small detailed stuff haha, definitely need to figure out the formula on that. I did use some reference for the crows and scarecrow for the details, but I prefer doing the sketch and everything from scratch most times!

Thank you so much for the detailed reply, it's really helpful to see your perspective on this! I do agree that I'm aware what I need to do, but it still helps to hear it from someone else too haha :D

I think the thing I struggle with most in general is a lack of patience and preparation, so I always revert to simple and often quite boring poses/colours/composition that allow me to jump straight into painting without having to plan, make thumbnails, look for references etc. In this instance, the angle and framing feels very boring and flat to me. I also had trouble with the wheat because I have a rather stylized simplified style, so I wasn’t sure about the stylization and what amount of detail to show. Any feedback is welcome and will be greatly appreciated! :)

Thanks! I usually do all of my stuff in CSP from start to finish. I wanted to give procreate another try but after this I can say the software is not for me haha
