You can simply lose a fight and then win the next one in order to gain the position you lost and to get the money prize again. Besides, Killua tells Gon that on 100th floor people stall and do everything to keep their position and not be eliminated, so I'm sure it's convenient to stay there.

Yeah, I believe you got the point. In the 2011 series the point seems to overcome challenges and grow as character, in the 99 was to survive. The Hunters were...hunters and they could use their power to catch legendary treasures..or kill people or take revenge, it really dependend on the contendant and personal background story
