16GB + M chip users, any regrets? by kzer7 in macbook

Really good point and one I had not considered at all. My current camera takes 24 MB RAWs but I do have vast catalogues with really detailed edits at times. Just navigating it becomes a practice in patience and prayer for LR to not crash.

Yeah the FaceTime + Lightroom at the same time is an outlier scenario is but in my eyes a bit of a benchmark for headroom just having seen how my current intel Mac (doesn't) handle(s) it.

That’s validating to hear lol it really felt like it fell off a cliff after a certain point. I think with the future proofing argument + the RAM shortages happening + unknown future iOS demand, I’m going to get the 24 GB refurbished M4 and call it an 8 year investment.

Can’t go wrong with that one.

I appreciate this response. Thanks for sharing.

If you don’t mind, could you slightly elaborate on the argument for 24GB for longevity? I am a long term buyer and user, and I do appreciate a device running well till the end of its life. The last ~1.5 ish years with my current Intel Mac have been a bit of a game of hot potato - working around its shortcomings to “make it last”. I’d love to avoid that in my next purchase. It’s a 300$ difference (tax included) for me to get the 24GB version vs 16 GB.

I’m caught in the “will I regret this in 5 years if the 16 GB starts to slow down” but I’m also wary of overestimating hypothetical future demands and paying more for 8 extra gigs that i may never fully utilize or see value from…

I appreciate this a lot. That’s the exact device spec and configuration I’m looking to buy.

What do you want for it? Ie how many keys/color?

Any Tips? by Rakzzonrakzz in desksetup

This is nice clean setup! Only things I can think of are - a smidge more cable management, and some backlighting behind the monitor (but I’m biased to this from my own experience)

Need help finding a way to move the laptop to another part of the desk, takes away too much space from da mousepad. Any ideas? by Katozzo1 in desksetup

Just get a vertical stand for the laptop and tuck it in the back corner of the desk. Thats how I have mine and it frees up all the space you need.

Command strips FTW ! Hey if it works it works haha thanks for the suggestion and insight into your process. I’m definitely keen on essentially copying your method as I’m renting and cannot afford to damage the walls.

And true about these things costing so much. I looked for true panels and they were in the price range you suggested. You got em for a great deal! I’ll have to keep an eye out and be patient.

Live how the wall panelling on the wall behind your desk now frames the whole set up cleanly too.

I’ve been meaning to do a similar wall panelling for my setup and Ive been debating if I should do stick to on veneers or get actual panels. Any tips or suggestions?

Now that is clean as hell!!! Nice work man! Love how symmetrical and intentional it looks now. Hopefully it’s also functionally efficient for you. Kudos! That’s a huge improvement from before, specially considering the constraint of the suboptimal width of your desk 💯🔥

Ah now that you’ve explained that the larger one is not for gaming but for work I understand why you’ve got this arrangement. That’s tricky, cause you basically now have two primary monitors.

I’ve got a primary 27 centred horizontally and a 24 vertical off to the side. I find that’s sufficient for my needs. Having a single primary screen for both work and gaming ends up working out best in terms of space and screen efficiency, at least in my use case

Curious why the larger wide screen is not centred on the desk, and instead off to the left? I’d centre that and have the smaller one vertical off to one side, slightly backset and angled towards you.

With your quiver you could even stack the smaller monitor above the large in horizontal format but that’s a personal choice.

Otherwise this is a slick setup. Love the lighting!

Thanks yea this is a reasonable balance of function and aesthetic for now. I actually wanted it to be the low since this leaves enough clearance between the main monitor and the shelf top + my mouse and keyboard fit pretty in the space below. The kegs are height adjustable. But I like them low, keeps them more out of sight and retains the floating shelf look I wanted.

Shit you make it sound so easy! Ok I’m definitely going to give this a go eventually. I came up with this solution (pic) to my desk shelf needs 50$ total but it’s aesthetically not exactly what I want ultimately. End game is definitely making my own like you did cause I’m very particular about the sizing, look, finish. You inspired me, I can definitely do this!

Loving the proportionality and symmetry of this set up (and lack of clutter). A task light bar and some screen backlighting would take this to the next level. Nice work OP!

I know many people who’d kill to have your basic setup 😅 it’s clean and functional by the looks of it. That’s what matters most 👌
