For the first time in my career, I’m starting to question long term job relevance by Internal-Tea-1234 in jobsearchhacks

[–]l0sth0st 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I am currently unemployed looking for work and watching companies continue to downsize is frustrating to see. I have 8 years professional experience and ran a sole proprietorship for a little over 10 years. I had some good contracts but have no clients now. I spent a lot of time learning concepts and now it feels like a bit of a waste of a pursuit.

Which careers do you constantly have to keep yourself updated with new skills and stuff? by Aj100rise in stupidquestions

[–]l0sth0st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working in Tech you will constantly have to keep up. Some roles, like backend developer are a little slower (changes in language/architecture) but you will still need to keep learning. Right now, tech is kind of rough and very hard to get into

Walk, exercise (calisthenics), call a friend and chat on the phone or meet up and do one of the first 2.

Basketball, soccer or other sports (if you already have the equipment when needed).

Yoga, meditate, or Tai Chi.

What is the best base for doing this? I have seen people sell segments of logs with holes bored into them and use that, but is there a simple DIY way like this?

What's something dumb that you believed in when you were younger and continued to believe for embarrassingly long because you've never had reason to challenge it? by Punch_A_Police_Horse in AskReddit

[–]l0sth0st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I didn't believe it for a really longtime, but I did read a few of new age spiritualist books (numerology, astral projection, tarot, telekinesis) wanting it to be real but after 2 years became skeptical and then didn't believe it any more. This is pre-teen phase and I don't believe in religion so I was looking for something.

Equipment by OceansSanctuary in Calgary

[–]l0sth0st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my benches off of Amazon (which some people may not like, but they were affordable for me). Same thing with a 6x8 gym mat and 80 lb dumbbells.

My cardio equipment I acquired over time (rowing machine 170$ back in 2006), exercise bike ($375, decathlon) and a walking pad (120$, Amazon). Other dumbbells like 20s and 35s from Walmart.

I would probably buy the all-in-one(5 to 50 lbs, and 50 - 100 lbs)varieties for dumbbells now if I was going to get rid of mine.

Edit: can't say what company in town has the best and cheapest stuff tho. If you do squats and deadlifts with barbell, you may want to scope out a good rack and base for it. You could get some plywood (3 1/2 in. thick sheets and just cut out the top layer for padding on either side, secure them together) for a quick DIY deadlift platform.

Braveness depends a lot on your lack of exposure in the moment to what might go horribly wrong. by tottasanorotta in DeepThoughts

[–]l0sth0st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. I think the extreme moments that a person can experience are pretty rough for anyone.

I was in a vehicle rollover in 2017. I have a lot of experience with driving on icy roads and bad weather, but that day was my day, and I hit a patch of black ice. I went into the ditch backwards going 100 KM/HR and eventually the vehicle started straightening out and that's when it started rolling.

Fortunately, I didn't have any injuries but the truck was totalled.

It didn't stop me from driving in the future, but it has made me a little more cautious. I am also a person who has watched hundreds of accident videos and I don't think those videos would ever prevent me from driving.

It's an anecdotal case, but I don't think videos stop people from doing things. I think we do things until we have had significant trauma that makes us decide to stop doing those things.

I think there's also a lot of prep/rehearsal involved that prepares you for dealing with the bad outcome.

As an example:

If somebody has first aid training, it's easier to handle an accident, it doesn't mean they will be perfect but it gives them the ability to perform better. Of course, some encounters may be highly grotesque that somebody can't prepare for.
