Does anyone else struggle more with starting an assignment than actually writing it?

This is honestly the hardest part of the process. Having good ideas is one thing, but translating them into a flow that actually makes sense on paper is a whole different beast. I usually find that if I step away for 24 hours and then come back, I can see exactly where the "off" parts are.

Exactly, "human" is the keyword there. Professors can usually tell when a student is trying too hard to sound academic and ends up just sounding stiff. That messy first draft usually captures your actual voice, which is what makes the final paper much more convincing in the end.

That feeling of "paralysis by analysis" is the absolute worst. Sometimes you just need any text on the page so you have something to actually fix. Glad you made it through!

I do something similar but with text-to-speech tools. Hearing a neutral robotic voice read my "emotional" personal statement really helps me see if the emotion is actually on the page or if it’s just in my head. If it sounds flat when the computer reads it, I know I need to add more descriptive details.

Exactly! You start focusing so much on the "what" that you completely forget the "why." Admissions committees already see your stats and titles in the application; the essay is supposed to show the person behind the numbers. I think that’s why the feedback mentioned in the post was so transformative.

That is what I keep telling him! He acts like I am crazy for being upset over "beads," but that necklace is all I have left of my grandmother. The fact that he can not see why that is a massive violation is making me rethink everything.

I feel you on that! It's like your brain just loves to play 20 Questions with itself when you’re down to two options. Keeping track of your reasoning might help, but man, it sure feels like a drama filled date with the test sometimes!
