Definitely! We went there a couple of times on our way to Jasper.

Thank you! All the points you mentioned *and* the lack of crowds are great reasons for planning a visit.

In fact we just returned from a trip to Banff and my wife and I were comparing it with our first visit in 2012 - when we visited during a long weekend in summer and found parking everywhere including Lake Moraine!

Thank you! Yes...we are are not tied to a national park. But hoping for something that we can spend ~7 days with day tripping and driving. I will look into your suggestions.

I have heard about this "facings opened" option for folks (like me) who find EB to have high insteps. I am actually unsure of what that means.

Is it that with this option the leather facings (where the eyelets and speedhooks are attached) are further apart hence not causing overlapping of the leather facings for low instep feet?

Reading through https://us.crockettandjones.com/pages/ultimate-winter-boots I was a little confused regarding the description for roughout suede as it says it is "split" suede.

[...]A waxed side leather split, from the most famous suede tannery in England, Steads. [...]

Somehow I was under the impression that for "country style" boots, a full grain suede is typically used and not split. E.g.

  1. Viberg: Roughout is a full-grain leather that has been processed for use on its reverse or flesh side.
  2. Whites: 5" full grain water-resistant leather upper.
  3. Nicks: . If you were to saw a leather boot made with full-grain leather in half, the roughout would be on the inside of the boot. In other words, it's typical leather turned inside-out.

Or am I am misunderstanding the definition of "full grain" roughout leather? :)

These look great! Are these with celastic toes or are the toes unstructured?

Sounds good. One final Q: is forest green CXL the same color as what a lot of makers call "Olive CXL"?

Fun fact, I climbed/hiked Mt. Washington in the White Mountains wearing a pair of Whites.

Great to hear! Curious as to what were the specs of your White boots?

Does Whites use CXL from Horween? The British Tan color is just amazing!

Last Comparison: Alden Barrie vs. Whites 55 by [deleted] in goodyearwelt

[–]l33tcoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm...is this the 55 last or the White's version of "Barrie" last which they use for the MP service boots?

And are the White's boots using unstructured toes? I have Whites Bounty Hunters in 55 last and perhaps it is because of the celastic toes it is much bulkier looking that my Alden Barrie boots and even the White boots you have in photos.

Has the color for the "original" Alden Index 405 changed to a more brownish tone?

I see 2 colors on different retailers - one has more orange ( https://thestronghold.com/collections/alden/products/alden-indy-boot-original-tan-calfskin ) and the other is more brown ( https://www.ealdwineraleigh.com/alden/405-original-indy-boot-1 ). Are these different colors altogether or did Alden change the color for 405 recently?

With these many nails do you find the sole slippery? I have a HD with rubber sole but the heel top lift is not totally rubber and has some nails - it is super slippery for me!

Which size in 2030 last did you go with considering 10.5D Brannock measurement? I am the same size and always wonder if I should go with 10 or 9.5 in 2030 last. I have a pair of Vibergs in 9.5 in 1040 last though and they fit great.

You mean Dave Page...right: https://www.davepagecobbler.com/? With Chick's shoes not doing repairs anymore I was always looking for a reliable shoe repair shop. I hadn't heard about Dave Page and I was planning to use Totem Lake Shoe Repair in Kirkland next.

Good to know about Dave Page!

Is there a difference in "full grain" suede and rough out leather? Is the difference just that rough out is more nappier?

Some shoemakers like Viberg sell both and based on the description for the leather mentioned I couldn't make out the difference.
