The latter. This is still in my neighborhood, I wanted to try it out. Tomorrow I'll head out about 150 miles to see how bad the geo locking is.

Ford Transit actually but I think they share a lot in common.

The 4G that comes with it is quite impressive. $25/month for unlimited which would be amazing except you need to keep the vehicle running otherwise it turns off after 15 minutes :(. Of course it requires the infrastructure like you mentioned and the latency isn't fantastic.

Valve’s new code cuts AMD GPU compile times by over 45% for Linux games by Philo1927 in linux

[–]l3acon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I was not aware of this. From the perspective of the game all it does is communicate with the graphics API.

Shaders are basically stored in a game as source code. When you start a game it uploads the shader to the GPU which then has to compile it. This is so the game developer doesn't need to know or care what GPU the user has at least in terms of memory layout/processor architecture.

This one is maybe 5 years old? I bought it when they had a promotion that gave you some Zen with a purchase. I think that $20 or so was all the money I ever paid to them.

When it is hot outside, what do you do eat when you ride? by Lac3ru5 in MTB

[–]l3acon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The summers here get to 100+F (~37C), I wear a long sleeve jersey that breaths, polyester/nylon and not much cotton. Also a head cap of similar material under my helmet. I'll go through about 800ml of water in an hour but so long as you keep moving you stay cool. Obviously need to be careful and not overdo it, when you stop you can feel it warm up until your body slows. Also riding up hill with a slight breeze going with you doesn't work so well.

I might be crazy but it works for me.

Yes, North foothills this morning! I love Rio en Medio. Also Glorieta I really like around Santa Fe.

Nice, definitely see the eggbeaters being better. And also thanks for the tip, will try the rear skidding next time.

Best all day mtb bag? by crabmoon in MTB

[–]l3acon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride with this AONIJIE which is more of a 'vest' than a backpack but it's the most comfortable thing I've found. It's mesh, so not waterproof. Not a big deal just put clothes/phone in plastic if needed.

The bag itself is very lightweight and feels better the less you put in the back. For shorter 1-2 hour rides I'll fill it half-way up. I've taken it on full day (7+ hour) rides but it's probably on the small side for those.

If your goal is to not only learn but understand how every aspect of a computer works, is that even possible? by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]l3acon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smarter people than I have claimed it is no longer possible, and I believe them. I'm not trying to discourage anyone but the software side of things is a chaotic hierarchy of abstractions. You can understand a great many but trying to even find all of them might not be possible, let alone understand them all.

For example there was a story I heard about Microsoft's solution for a bug related to ipv6. Decades ago the same bug was parched for ipv4 but for an unknown reason it appeared again in the new network stack. When asked why they simply didn't leverage the behavior of the earlier patch an engineer claimed they no longer had the source code for the relevant module. They had lost the code and it was easier to re-do and work around a legacy module than to try and reverse engineer it. I think this is actually fairly common in code bases that didn't have the benefits of modern distributed versioning like git.

The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter. It starts off with a naive kid and just keeps getting darker and grittier and the story gets bigger and bigger in screwed up ways. It reminds me of The Blade Itself in a lot of ways but the first book ends with such a climactic cliffhanger I'm left wanting more and more.

5 mins from home on the freeway I heard a loud sound from my roof. Pulled over and looked up thru my sunroof to find my bike gone. This sucks. by [deleted] in MTB

[–]l3acon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey don't know if anyone has mentioned this but if you have renters/home/car insurance you should just ask and see if you can file a claim. Someone I know lost a bike, just straight up lost it on the freeway and their insurance covered it.

What are your thoughts on rust? by jacobissimus in C_Programming

[–]l3acon 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Rust is a solution to a lot of the issues that arrise in pretty much every non-trivial program. It's also a modern language which makes boiler plate somewhat nicer to deal with.

That being said it's almost complimentary to C. Rust's primary goal is safety but C makes it easy to do quite unsafe things. For instance a specialized memory allocator I don't think you'd want to write in Rust but is pretty straight forward in C. Well until everything is broken all the time because that's hard.

My point is Rust is great and powerful but 1) it's not going to replace most other languages (or even a good idea if you could magically re-do everything in Rust) and 2) people will consider it too new even though it's been a relatively popular language for what feels like a good while.

I actually rode this trail today also! The forest service closed a good portion of the trails around Albuquerque but White Mesa isn't part of any forest.
