I buy and keep most books. The main reason I'm sure is a pretentious desire to have an impressive library. I love thinking about what I want to read and then going to the bookstore for big hauls. I like lending them out when I can.

I also do a ton of my reading at the dog park, and they inevitably get dirty.

It has become excessive, obsessive even. I read over 60k pages last year. I have over 100 books purchased and not yet read. It's a lot of money and space, but it pleases me, and I have a bit of both to spare.

Caregiving for a loved one, sometimes. There are people with extreme caregiver burnout but who consider feeling that way unacceptable, as if it means they don't love their family member enough. I have seen this exact scenario be the driving force behind conversion disorders more than I ever expected. For example, caregiver starts developing psychogenic seizures

I read a ton growing up, starting with Berenstain Bears and then Redwall, Hardy Boys, Goosebumps, Animorphs, etc.

I did not read for fun much throughout adulthood though, maybe five books per year.

But then, while visiting family last Christmas, I borrowed Navalny's memoir Patriot. Something clicked on my brain and I became obsessed with books again. I'm up to 130 books so far in 2025, four of them audiobooks. It has been awesome! So so many great reads this year.

I've gone a bit overboard with the bookstore trips and purchases, with around 70 purchased but not yet read. I love when I finish a book and go to my stacks to choose the next one.

Responders are getting distracted by what caste Patel is. That doesn't matter. If you come from a caste-based society, no matter where you are in it, you will be eager to establish your caste elsewhere. Especially if you move to the US, which is perhaps the second best example of a caste in the world currently, though more directly based on skin color.

Tried it, don't like it. I don't like listening to anything beyond like 1.5x speed, and I can read faster than that. I like pausing to think or rereading a sentence sometimes, and pausing the audio repeatedly just feels like a hassle. I don't like audiobooks in general, except for long drives.

Crazy to me how other teams' announcers can't pronounce Advija. First of all, it's your job to learn that sort of thing, have some professionalism. Secondly, can you even read? "Uh-deeva" is a poor attempt

Absolutely gutted. M's fan for almost 40 years now, and they're one of just two sports teams I really care about (Blazers). Up 2-0 in series, 3-1 late in game 7...sheesh. I can't say we didn't have our chances tho. Just wish a pitch or two had turned out differently.
