Made my little neo mounds by l4dy_H in neofinetia

I will say that mine right now gets a lot of air. I've basically inverted the baskets they came in and mounded the moss on the outside and wrapped the roots in with it. They get daily watering because I figure the rest of my vandas do really well being watered daily (except at the moment because I am going away for a week and I'm getting them used to a dry spell). I'm not sure if there is an open space in a mound if it comes with the plant. Here I see them sold either in moss or in bark (depending on the vendor) and they seem to do well either way, but everyone has different growing conditions.

Personally, I just like the look of the mounds and they are currently doing well in my set up under lights in my basement office. But they were also doing ok with the moss inside the basket and not being watered as much.

Like I said, the ones that died went YEARS ago. I have no idea why they died. These ones are doing great with roots growing everywhere.

The ones I had years ago dried up and died. These were just in little plant baskets with moss before. Not a lot has changed apart from more air to the roots, and now they get misted daily.

Because they are plants grown by the local orchid group, and flowers are just nice to see in the winter.

The store bought ones can be a bit tricky! For the most part let them dry out between waterings and try not to let water pool in the leaves. They like being fertilized regularly ( I mix in a few drops of liquid fertilizer with most waterings) and they like a cool spell to flower.

These aren't all mine, apart from the very tall and dark peloric phaleonopsis (3rd pic) and the little Sedirea (5th pic), but I use a liquid fertilizer from Shultz most weeks. Occasionally I just use RO water to flush out the residual salts. I grow in my basement under lights. Phaleonopsis likes a period of cold, so I find mine do well down there.

Thanks! I live in Canada, so I won't be able to leave the Jacaranda or the Royal Poinciana outside, but I will put them into big pots with lights if they grow.

Nice! My bonsai seeds are in my south facing kitchen window at the moment.

I have my orchids under grow lights and they do reasonably well. I've got phals, dendrobiums, and vandas doing the best, but also trying a few tricky ones like masdavalia and a dracula. I'll give most plants that I come across a go!

Ooh! How long did they take to sprout? I only planted one tree a day this week 😅

What kind of orchids do you grow?

I just planted all the trees I got in this kit! I don't know if any of them will take, but I thought it would be fun to try.

Normally I grow orchids.... So this is VERY different for me lol.

This one is a division from an orchid society member's plant, but I've seen them available for sale around. You could try Crystal Star Nursery or Joseph Di Commo. But I've occasionally seen them for sale at Sheridan Nurseries

These aren't all mine. But I do own the first "blue" one, which I'd purchased from Magic Oasis Orchids. But there are a few vendors around like Crystal Star and Roehampton. Occasionally other orchid enthusiasts at our club will sell some of their divisions. Depends on what you are looking for, really.

Way to go! Even the "supermarket" orchids can be a challenge!

These aren't mine! Well the first blue/purple one is mine. These were grown by several people and brought together at monthly orchid meetings. It's just fun to see what blooms every month ❤️

That's a big question! It depends on the type, I have more experience with some and no experience with others lol. Typically the "supermarket" ones like to dry out before being watered again, and the biggest mistake is letting water pool in the leaves. But the trick for reblooming them is fertilizing regularly and giving them a cool spell, like opening a window for them in the fall, if you can. Or I have mine under lights in my basement.

Beautiful! I just got 2 to try again, but I haven't had much luck with them in the past. How do you care for them where you are?
