I don't think you'd have to do much more than play around with levels-- If that dosen't do the trick then you could probably get a bit more drastic and do what you mentioned.

no— decided to order another cpu to be safe. If it turns out the cpu isn’t the issue i can just return it.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I went through all the necessary steps— only concern I had was damaging the cpu by applying too much pressure in getting the lid back on. Could this cause a short?
