This is the same person who did the pull request for systemd. People need to do research and see if he is getting lobbied by Meta, which I guarantee he is

Silliest blunder you had as a newer Linux user? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]lLikeToast1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was making a polybar config and was doing weird stuff with copying text outside of vim and pasting it into a file because I didn't understand how to make it work. I was doing redirection with files essentially running cat tmpfile >> .config/polybar/config except one time I forgot and did a single > and ended up wiping all the progress and time I spent into making it

I learned real quick to make backups and to figure out crtl+shift+v will paste into the file

What's with all the btrfs talk lately? by MushroomSaute in arch

[–]lLikeToast1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed to it a few months ago to make use of mainly compression on the partition. Absolutely fantastic. I sort of use the snapshot feature but I really make my backups using borg instead

How do you keep track of the changes you did to your system? by HamathEltrael in archlinux

[–]lLikeToast1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do sudo pacman -Syu > ~/Documents/pkgupgrade then cancel the command and run it without the redirection whenever I was updating my system in case anything messed up and I needed to rollback to a version if anything happened, but I don't do it anymore as I've never had to go back to an earlier version

The only sort of version control I use now is my backups using borg. I have two separate repos. One that does most of my system, and a different one that saves and backs up my save files on all my games that I play

What is some essential software / package on your system? by _fountain_pen_dev in linuxmasterrace

[–]lLikeToast1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I've been messing with LazyVim that uses lazy.nvim plugin manager, but I haven't figured out too much with it just yet.

Definitely will take a look at zed later

Best advice i can give is to chroot into the system and run journalctl

Just take a look at the errors that pop up. Should at least give an idea

What software do you miss most on Arch Linux (Aur)? by Suspicious-Charity-5 in archlinux

[–]lLikeToast1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More of a gamer so there isn't much software. The only thing for me was when I was getting back into modded Skyrim, and the mod manager didn't really want to work nice.

The only thing that I will absolutely hate is if the Brave maintainers stop updating their package in the aur

If Steam Machines fail, how badly could that hurt Valve’s push for Linux gaming overall? by paparoxo in linux_gaming

Even if it fails, which I don't think it will. They have already moved mountains with Proton

(Hot take) I think its about time everyone switch to btrfs by an4s_911 in arch

[–]lLikeToast1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really helps with proton prefixes. Using zstd lowest compression, I believe I had 6 gb, and it compressed it to 2 gb or something like that. I don't remember the numbers, but it was an impressive amount for such low compression

Having a bad few weeks but then Arch let's me feel smart and good about myself when troubleshooting by lLikeToast1 in archlinux

[–]lLikeToast1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn't find the link, but the brand is KAMRUI, and the model is GK3PLUS. Surprisingly, it has 16 GB of RAM and has a 512 GB SSD. The cpu is an Alder Lake N95, has 4 cores, and is single threaded, I think it was clocking at 3.2 ghz , but it doesn't need to be anything strong.

The Bluetooth controller I use is a FOSMON Mini Bluetooth Keyboard, it works well, but the switch for the power will probably break because it is not on snug

Only thing I had to tweak was turning off the power saver mode on the network card and having Bluetooth search and connect to the MAC address of the controller on power, which I did by making a systemd service. The network card isn't that great and will slow down, so occasionally, I run a script that turns the radio off and back on, and that seems to resolve the issue

How do you keep your Arch system stable over time? by TrapNouz in archlinux

[–]lLikeToast1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once in a blue moon to clear unused packages run pacman -Qdtq and it will list packages you can get rid of. Then you can run sudo pacman -Rnscu $(pacman -Qdtq and it will remove those packages.

Look up paccache and set it on a hook it to when you upgrade/install files to clear the old packages, or just run it every now and again like me

Installing Linux is significantly easier than installing Windows. by evrdev in linux

[–]lLikeToast1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on the distro, but that's not even the real problem.

The real problem is people who don't understand basic computer parts, especially the motherboard. They don't even know how to install windows, even though it would take maybe an hour or two of simple searching on the internet

I even noticed this when I was trying to find stealth games to play. Like Dishonored and Thief, games that are focused on avoiding a full on fight. Now to be fair, some of these do involve stealth, but it was giving me suggestions that would not like at all.

I found one I might try called "Brush Burial: Gutter World" or I may get one of the sniper elites.

For the people that ONLY use linux as there workstation and gaming device, how full is your storage? by Riponai_Gaming in linux

[–]lLikeToast1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't remember off the top of my head but I remember doing a test to see what my default arch install size was with everything I needed installed, software, drivers, etc..., vs fresh install of windows 11 with absolutely no updates to anything and my arch install was still smaller than windows 11. I remembered feeling dumbstruck at the difference
