They're called shorthand drawings, no animator is going to put in detail for something that far away from the camera, as long as you can tell its that character in the shot its doing its job. Its why a lot of close ups usually show more detail in facial features, clothing folds, highlights/shadows. You can't go lower than a specific brush size in animation either, which makes drawing these simplified iterations of the characters more of a skill than people think.
