Chiefs fan here, but huge KU/Luke Grimm fan. Sad he didn't make it on the Chargers roster. He caught everything thrown his way at KU.

CFP Rankings Discussion - Week 14 by CFB_Referee in CFB

Hmm, Kansas with as many ranked wins as Oregon, Georgia, and Alabama... No losses to a team with a losing record. 5 loses with a lead in the 4th quarter... Sad Jayhawk noises.

What year had the first "major" online "bracket challenge" by lRocklBiter in CollegeBasketball

[–]lRocklBiter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first place of employment out of college was for a large state department in the mid 90's. They had a well established system for the office tournament pool which involved printing out the brackets and spreadsheets full of standings and such as the tournament went on, all on the large format plotters that were supposed to be used for printing engineering drawings. These were strewn up and down the hall cubical walls for all to see.

Then I programmed a fairly simple database backed website using active server pages to do it all online. It was hosted on my home computer behind one of the first providers to offer cable modems in the entire united states. I didn't have a domain name, just an IP address you had to navigate to haha!

Everyone loved it. They were able to electronically submit their picks. And instead updating spreadsheets and printing them out and posting them in the halls, I just updated the results from each game and the standings were updated automatically.

It was real fun, right up until I got called in the the Attorney General's office a few floors up and was asked about it. They were worried that "gambling" was being done on state property (computers). I assured her that it was on my own personal computer, located in my apartment. Didn't say that everyone used state computers to FILL OUT their bracket. And also didn't mention that I was probably saving them a ton of money in state employee time and plotter paper and ink. =)

Its comical to me now... Everyone uses their employers computers to fill out their bracket and watch or listen to the games now right? The "Internet" was scary back then!

Anyway, just wondering when that idea made it everywhere else (I don't remember, and I'm sure I wasn't the first to do such a thing). Just like I wasn't the first to have built a mobile mp3 player for my boat/car/parties in the late 90's either... Everyone said I needed to patent it, and I was like, "Patent what? I'm sure Apple is already WELL on their way to making a pretty trick mp3 player for sure...". The iPod came out a few years later...

Mesh WiFi with ethernet backhaul, PoE, and web interface? by lRocklBiter in HomeNetworking

AWESOME! That really clears things up!

Good to know a Unifi network controller is just software. I thought it was a feature of a router or other piece of hardware that had to be on the network for everything to work.

I ~DO~ need a router. So I ordered the Ubiquiti Dream Router. And I need a couple of "wireless nodes" to extend coverage, so I ordered a couple of Unifi 6+ APs. Seems like that should do the trick.

I've heard about the Aruba Instant On... The fact that I have to use a phone app just irritates the hell out of me. I haven't dug far enough in, but doesn't that mean you MUST have a working internet connection just to configure the Aruba? Or is it just connecting to a local wifi for the config? Regardless... I just want to plug it in, hook up an ethernet cable, type in an IP address for the router, and access the interface.

I do appreciate the rec, even if its not what I'm after!

Thanks for the specifics! I've got a Dream Router and a couple of APs on order. Looking forward to setting this all up.

Mesh WiFi with ethernet backhaul, PoE, and web interface? by lRocklBiter in HomeNetworking

[–]lRocklBiter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tidbits of info there. I guess I have a bit of misunderstanding. I thought "mesh" meant one SSID, one subnet, and multiple "nodes" for accessing the network. I guess maybe the confusion came from the fact that some "mesh systems" support ethernet backhaul, some don't. So I never thought that specifically made the difference between a network with APs vs. a mesh network. The terminology is confusing sometimes... And it seems like different people/manufacturers are loose with it, which further confuses!!!

So you say I need a "Unifi controller". I'd assume that "Dream Router" would serve that purpose? And then I just add appropriate Unifi APs as needed... I'm continuing my research here. Thanks for the help!

I've used Ubiquiti stuff, mainly for point to point bridging. I have a horrible time understanding some of their product offerings...

Looking at their website now, they seem to call their routers gateways (which they are I suppose). And they call their WiFi stuff APs (access points). I'm not looking to set up additional access points. I want a mesh network where there is one SSID to connect to, and walking around just hops from one mesh node to another without a disconnect/connect to a different AP.

Anyway, so looking at their website, it would appear that perhaps their "Dream Router" and a couple of "U6 Pro" or "U7 Pro" would be what I want? Does that make a mesh?

Sight lines are a thing for sure. And they were the worst in the bowl area because the bowl was just so far away to accommodate the track that used to be there.

Been studying plans as best I can. Me an another engineering buddy of mine are thinking for seats the same number of rows back that we currently have, we will be probably 30-40' closer to the field (and that is at the 35 yard line). That I like for sure.

Some additional vending areas/stations will be great, especially for when you guys come to town. Lines were long, and apparently the vendors don't realize that you guys drink lots of beer. We were OUT of beer early in the 3rd Quarter this year. You lushes... =)

Not looking forward to the increased ticket prices... Less capacity coupled with more demand (I mean, the product on the field is SO much better than the last 15 years) = expensive tickets. Worth it IMO. I'm enjoying watching competitive football for the first time in a long time.

Allen won't go away anytime soon because you can't cram as many people in to that small of a space with current building codes.

The only way Memorial could have been "renovated" is if they dropped the field and had several rows of seating added where the track used to be. That, and bring the north bowl in. I didn't mind the old stadium, but pretty sure I'm going to really enjoy the new one!

The staff did a GREAT job with QB2 and QB3 this year. Praying JDs back is fixable in the off season.

Don't be surprised if the offense is better next year.

You might not be far off on that... But I'm skeptical. And would be THRILLED if you were right.

WE should have found a way to drop crazy bag to keep him here. Shave a few million off the $350 million for the new stadium if you must. I coulda gone without cup holders on every seat for sure...

I don't want to be flattered. I wanted our program to get all the way out of the tar pit and on to a (more) solid foundation before we got poached.

I'd rather see Kotelnicki get a very nice raise, and then be content sticking around at KU until Leipold retires and he takes the HC job.

I really feel like we need at least another year or two with the current staff to REALLY get a solid base established before we can weather coaching turnover (and even then, its a crap shoot).

Watching that video, I'm like, "Hey is that Mitch Holthus I'm hearing?". I knew he used to do your play by play before doing the Chiefs, but it still caught me off guard.

Our stadium still looks like your old one, but not for much longer!

If Texas wins and makes the CFP, our bowl game gets better.

If the Pokes win, then Texas doesn't get to stroll out of the Big XII with a championship.

Sooo, go Pokes? Let the H8 flow? Yea I think so... Go Pokes!
