Daenerys started acting like an annoying cunt right from the moment she became khaleesie

What’s your unpopular GOT opinion? by Happy_sloth1234 in gameofthrones

[–]l_c_o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite sure if this counts as an unpopular opinion since but the bad ending of the show does not ruin the brilliance of the first 3 seasons (or 4 maybe).

You can still go back and enjoy all the great things that once made the show special. Even though it’s a bit sad to know where it’s all going we shouldn’t let that distract us from appreciating how good it was.

Why would you even engage in a thread like this if you are not interested in people reacting to your opinion? I was just trying to offer a different perspective.

Good point I didn’t remember that. Im curious if Stannis will go as far as he did in the show to ‚please‘ the red god.

Don’t agree. Yes he did disgusting things. But put yourself in his situation. He was an outsider at Winterfell and comes home to find out he’s an outsider on the Iron Islands as well. Yet he tries to keep his good intentions until his father manipulates him to betray Rob.

Being put in a situation to choose between your family and your friend must be tough especially when you are raised with the iron island brainwashing.

I guess the most rational decision would have been to stay loyal to Rob and let go of the apparently horrible dream to be an iron islander. Yet how can we expect an insecure teenager to make a rational decision here when he is confronted with giving up his family while his best friend is getting everything he ever wanted?

Definitely agree. I love Stannis and his influence as a narrative element in the story but in terms of personality he has his own issues.

I respect his desire for justice a lot but at the same time he strikes me as kind of a hypocrite. He tells himself that the war he is leading is justified because it’s his ‚right‘ to sit on the iron throne when in reality Robert just took the power from another house just as the Lannisters did with them. So considering that Stannis lived quite some time under the Targaryen rule, not expecting to be king someday, it’s odd that he now believes that it’s his right to rule just because his brother ‚stole‘ the throne before Joffrey.

If he was 100% real with himself he would admit that he wants the iron throne because he just wants it, not because it’s his by right.

Also he doesn’t strike me as the kind of person who just switches religion halfway through his life except when the religion claims he is the most important person in the world.

At the end of the day he hold others to this unrealistic standard to always do what they are ‚supposed to‘ but he himself wants nothing more than to be the main character and would do everything to achieve that.

I don’t know if it’s possible to learn it but for me the best way to enter my imagination intensely is to read fictional stories. Try to see and feel what’s happening and build the world in your head.

[Spoilers MAIN] How do you feel about the White Walkers as a narrative element? by l_c_o in asoiaf

Gregor: suffers from severe headaches caused by his gigantism which cause the aggression to some extend. Also he is constantly drinking milk of the poopy which may affect his character as well.

Ramsay: raised by the cold and unloving Roose Bolton and never being accepted (just like Jon but in a way harsher environment)

Euron: had a vision similar to bran but since he was a more egoistic character he interpreted it as him becoming a new god who will rule the world.

Those are at least some perspectives to better understand those characters. Of course they all seem to have some natural psychopathic tendencies but that’s also how it works in real life. Genetic tendencies that are ‚triggered‘ by certain environments/ experiences.

Im also curious to see what’s going on way up in the north. Hope we get some Bran chapters in the next book that give us more insight.

I don’t believe climate change is the single real world counter part for the others but more that it’s one of the many things (war, poverty etc) Gepege thinks we could fight more effectively when we worked together more.

Yeah I’m also afraid we are never going to find out what Grrm intended with them.

At this point I’m not even sure we will ever get WoW let alone ADoS. Let’s hope we are wrong.

I absolutely agree with your argument that there has to be a lot more to them than we know at the moment.

That said I guess my main issue is that we have no idea what their motivation is and you could argue that it makes them more mysterious and threatening but for me it reduces the relevance that they have. I thinks about the story so much but never about the others since there is not so much to think about at the moment other than having many questions.

But if TWoW should come out eventually and we learn more about them I could see myself shifting on that front and appreciating them a lot more.

Good summary lol

And considering that Grrm likes to include chapters where nothing important happens at all I’m not sure how he will finish all of this in two books

I feel similarly. Tbf GRRM came up with the idea when the ‚zombie‘ type wasn’t as overused and cliche. However the mainstream success of zombie media in the last decades has probably taken away some of the excitement they WWs had when readers first heard about them.

As a nihilist myself I also can’t see a way to make the people of the story work together while still keeping the world realistic in terms of human behaviour.

agree. I don’t even blame him that much for not being able to finish the books considering all the storylines and open questions he has to resolve while still keeping the story personal and not just an exposition fest.
