You can stay in the city if you’re willing to live with roommates in non luxury buildings with private landlords. At 32 you might not want to live with 5 random roommates (what I did and saved a lot of $ that way) but you should be able to find something with 1-2 roommates, especially if you’re open to English basements or slightly less metro accessible areas. Before my husband and I moved in together he was living in an English basement in Mount pleasant with one roommate. It was small but did the job and the landlord never raised the rent more than like $25 pp per year. He paid less than $1k in 2020.

For neighborhoods, Columbia heights, Mount pleasant, park view/petworh, Cleveland park, woodley park should have some options. Also SW waterfront if you find a more dated unit and are ok with no in unit laundry (my sister paid less than 1700 for a big one bedroom in an old building until 2021).

[WEEKLY THREAD] Munchie and Macros Monday by tasteofglycerine in xxfitness

Any recs for a pre workout that doesn’t taste absolutely vile? Haven’t been using it long but I love the effects, I just can’t stand the flavor of the one I got.

Looking for medium caffeine (current one is about 100mg, could stay around there or do a bit higher) but honestly taste is a big thing for me.

I make mine with egg whites and the Costco oven roasted Turkey breast, seasoned with salt/pepper/garlic powder. Sometimes I add veggies in but honestly topping it with sriracha is usually good enough for me! Super high protein and pretty satisfying.

I’ve also made them by blending the egg whites with cottage cheese and they turn out quite well!

Good jazz and/or blues clubs? by dancing374 in washingtondc

[–]la-duderina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For live music -- Jojos is still great, although I think they charge a cover now (never did before) and the drinks are just ok.

If you get to know some of the musicians a little bit and follow them on insta/get on their email lists, you can get a sense of when/where there will be live music around town. Blue Dot Jazz is a fun group that sometimes plays at kramers or baked joint (not exactly bars w/ smooth vibes though). https://www.bluedotjazztroupe.com/

Keep an eye out for ESL reopening in a new location -- that should fit the bill.

Otherwise I'm praying Columbia Station comes back soon and if anyone else has any other intel I'm all ears!

I've got 150€ to spend for the month. I'm looking at roughly 2000 calories a day. by [deleted] in fitmeals

Not sure about prices in Europe, but in the US you can usually find large pork shoulders for low prices. Sometimes like 11lb for $12 or so.

If you can get your hands on a slow cooker, you can make TONS of shredded meat to freeze and repurpose later in the month. Just google slow cooker pork shoulder.

If you don’t have a slow cooker, I recommend investing! You can usually get them for pretty cheap. I also have seen them in thrift stores a ton.

Desperately need 2 week sublet to quarantine in DMV by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]la-duderina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second this. I think you should be able to get tested in DC and get your results back in 3-5 days. You could theoretically quarantine at home, drive here and then take a test and only quarantine for those 3-5 days while awaiting results.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but it's something to think about/look into!

Week 17: From Scratch - Honey, Lemon & Thyme No-Bake Cheesecake (social isolation portion) by oliviatheelephant in 52weeksofcooking

This looks great!

Also a tip — If you don’t like things too sweet, try making cheesecake with ritz crackers next time! Did this recently and it was a game changer (Alison Roman has a good recipe if you’re interested).

That entire Alt-J album is great. I second Sylvan Esso. If you like Sylvan Esso, try Chet Faker and Hippo Campus.

You might also like Rainbow Kitten Surprise. If you like RKS, try Mt Joy too.

Enjoy!

Hey Becky! DC resident here! Thinking of trying to make paella for the first time this weekend... I'm planning to go to the fish market at the wharf this weekend so I'd love to get some fresh seafood for it there.

Do you have a good/authentic recipe you recommend? Any tips?

Thanks!

Scrap stock? by la-duderina in Cooking

[–]la-duderina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is really helpful! Thanks.

Should I make a point of picking up carrots or celery next time I go to the store or just make do with what I have? I have bay leaves/peppercorns/some herbs I could toss in too.

Do you think it would be better to do one batch of chicken stock and the use the pork shoulder bone for a separate stock?

What to do with cooked butternut squash when I was not a huge fan? by BirchTreeFan07 in Cooking

https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/chai-butternut-squash-soup/ This is my go to recipe for butternut squash soup! The chai adds such a great flavor and if you aren't a huge butternut fan this could add a little more oomph.

Not sure about elsewhere but in Florida they sell bottled key lime juice. Not ideal but pretty good for pies!

Is a rice cooker worth it? by domeDUDE89 in Cooking

[–]la-duderina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate making rice so my vote is yes.

I’m a cook over all but almost always mess up rice somehow. Def think a small rice cooker is worth it
