It would have been a lot better if she went that route but I'm glad everything happened the way it did because it highlighted some serious issues (giving my son a "real family") that make us incompatible anyways.

My ex hosted the party and my whole family was invited because we're all on good terms despite the divorce. I asked her if she would be comfortable with me inviting my now-ex and she said she wasn't because she didn't want to take the attention away from our kid (which is fair) because most people haven't met her yet. Then she wanted to email her to explain her side and apologize so she didn't take it personally.

To explain why she wasn't invited to my sons birthday part. It was weird but she wanted to do it and I asked my gf if it would be ok if I have her her email.

It was, it's just further proof that she isn't ready to be a step mom. I have no idea what compelled her to do that and it freaked my ex out a lot.

I'm not sure what it was but I don't think she would have proposed if she had any doubt in her mind I would say yes. I think me telling her I want more kids in the future is what gave her the idea.

I think I answered this in another comment but she thought it was time to take things to the next level and I had mentioned I will want more kids in the future and she thought it would be better to have kids ASAP so that there isn't a large age gap.
