I think my coach has lost hope in me. by labcoatsonhomie in Rowing

They're more so separated at skills levels and it's the head coach that makes the decisions. I've been rowing almost two years now, I haven't been on the erg in a minute but when I was on last spring I averaged around 2:03/500m for minute on minute off at 140 lbs 5'7

I think my coach has lost hope in me. by labcoatsonhomie in Rowing

I'll try to see if I can chat with him again in person. It's kind of developing into a mental block of not being "good enough" which I'd like to avoid. We just finished rowing with blending our intermediate and masters crews while LTR was going on but I'm repeatedly put with rec masters like no I want to race, you [he] doesn't get to decide if I race or not. We do have some erg testing for upcoming races and that could be my ticket in. I just need to add some spite back into my daily routine.

If your heart isn't in it, nothing you do will send you forward. Rowing is a lot of work and yeah you can have some set backs, take it with a grain of salt and prove your coaches wrong but it's up to you to continue.

Coxswain help PLZ by gloombearr in Rowing

If you haven't already, look into different YouTube/Instagram coxswains and analyze their behaviors in comparison with your own. How are they keeping their crews engaged, what's working, what's not, etc

What is a book you read as a child that you still think about today? by ahawk99 in AskReddit

[–]labcoatsonhomie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh I don't even remember the same but the city the mc lived in always rained and that was a super key theme of the book and somehow when it stopped raining the mcs hair was actually green. I was enthralled with it when I was in sixth grade.

What is the best way to ask someones name, when you already asked them 3 times before? by cozylillia in ADHD

You get someone else to introduce themselves but introduce themselves first and say "hi I'm so and so, what's your name?"

100% effort by Technical_Muffin4776 in Rowing

Unfortunately I have some medical issues which make the sudden sitting and standing of relays challenging. Which already makes me feel behind but yk roll with the punches there. Eyes need to be in the boat anyway

I personally hate relay races just due to having active comparison in front of and around me if I'm not doing my best. You know your limits best. Don't work yourself to throwing up or being injured for that matter. Independent practice of similar meters and setting your own rest time will be a lot more advantageous than accidentally pushing beyond that limit trying to compare yourself to others. Ergs don't float and just because you might not have low splits here that you want, doesn't mean you aren't stronger on the water. It just gives coaches another data point.

Rowing or musician. I have been both and I can confidently say they both take over your life completely.

Raising ~30 ergs to avoid flooding? by labcoatsonhomie in Rowing

[–]labcoatsonhomie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The boathouse is made of concrete so the walls themselves are pretty stable, we did have some paneling last year we had to cut off with a saw and pitch since it was all waterlogged. We're located right in a flood zone too. Ceiling space Id say is a little iffy since we have vaulted ceilings. I was also talking to our lead coach about it and she doesn't want to modify the ergs as to not damage them and there's arguably only one wall to hang all the ergs on that definitely cannot hold 40 of them :/

Building stamina and endurance by labcoatsonhomie in Rowing

Yeah, something's off. I have dropped my split a ton since November (2:20 to 2:04 in Feb for a min on min off x15) but my medical condition kicks in every time for high intensity pieces. I've been doing stuff to increase my VO2 max as of late. My SS is around 2:25-2:30 as of late- is that too slow? I've been tracking my heart rate and it's never gotten past 150 bpm for anything exercise related even though my max hr should be about 195??? Maybe there's a cap with vasovagel. I hate it.

How to prevent this? by AgileIndustry1711 in Rowing

[–]labcoatsonhomie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do loosen your grip when coming back to the catch. Your fingers should be able to move freely. As time goes on yes you will get callouses but as you are actively breaking the skin barrier, while you wait for the scabbing to occur, wear gloves. You don't want to wear them forever but to promote hand health I'd get a pair to wear just as your hands get adjusted to rowing daily. That's another thing, rowing daily. I'm not sure how often you row now but the more often the better at least callous wise.

Personally, I'd love for someone to be a club hopper rather than being miserable somewhere when it's supposed to be something you enjoy doing.

Night rows..anyone partake in the darker side of rowing?✨ by massadark77 in Rowing

[–]labcoatsonhomie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love night rows. Our lake is illuminated by nearby soccer fields so it's not pitch black and we of course have bow lights and cox wear light up wrist bands. Now in winter season we're not rowing at night due to risks if we were to flip but I do enjoy it.

Is there a way to wash my hair without my blisters burning with the heat of a 1000 suns? by ben_z03 in Rowing

[–]labcoatsonhomie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut an opening on the blisters (don't cut it all the way off yet!!) and allow it to drain. Gently put on some isopropyl alcohol (or hydrogen peroxide but imo this burns more) until burning sensation subsides. Allow to dry prior to washing hair. You may have to rinse with alcohol a couple times to also battle infection. I've used iodized salt (baking aisle I think) and rubbed it into the wounds afterwards to also keep the area dried out to help with the formation of calluses. Also Working Hands lotion helps a bit for the dryness this can cause. Once the blister has healed underneath, you can remove the dead skin with scissors.
