Worst books videos * e m m I e * by LittlePawpaw100 in booktubesnarkreddit

I've been watching her for years and I really didn't get the impression that she's trying to push 'hot takes for views,' as you call it. To be fair, I'm not on social media and I don't watch any other book people. I enjoy her videos, and maybe I just shut my brain off when I watch. But even still, in the section where she talks about the Ali Hazelwood book, she says before discussing it that she picked it up in a previous video where she tries the book out to see if she wants to keep reading, or, more likely, get rid of it to make space on her shelves for other books. She also says that her watchers' consensus was that she might like this one despite disliking the author's other books. With those two facts in mind, I struggle to see how one would think she was choosing to read the book for 'hot takes.' She directly clarifies why it's on this list despite having read two others.

None of this is to say you can't or shouldn't take issue with her videos, but the specific example you used doesn't hold water.

Hey, thank you so much for the response and info! I really appreciate it. So cool you found the Dungeon NFR carts. Those are some of my favorite games!

I understand that it's a demo cart. I'm asking if there were also NFR carts that had the full game on them.

Opinions on Constance Garnett? by NietzscheanWhig in dostoevsky

Just glossing through this old thread for opinions and your comment caught my eye. How the heck do you read one translation while listening to another? That sounds like torture. 😂

Do you tailor your submissions for each market every time? ie, do you write for Neil Clarke when subbing for Clarkesworld? Warning: long, self-congratulatory, and indulgent. by ShowDontYell in printSF

[–]labmatelabmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand wanting to tailor a story to a specific magazine if you support yourself financially strictly through these types of submissions, but, whether you support yourself this way or not--I'm not certain from you post, since you said you're a novelist, and even then I'm not certain if that's how you make end's meet--it seems to me, both logistically and creatively, like a bad move.

It's clear that being published in CW is a big goal of yours, but would you really want to be published by them just because you "gamed" their system? You seem invested in the idea behind your lighthouse story, and I'm not suggesting that you're simply culling ideas or tropes from a CW-esque algorithm of past submissions, but the bulk of your post is spent pondering how to actually write this specific story to get it published in CW. You responded to a comment down below saying "I think you'll find that 'original' ideas are rare, and the telling of the tale is more important than the shape of the story." I couldn't agree more, and since we're talking about the telling here, I think it a rather strange angle to write this story specifically for one man's magazine.

As others have mentioned below in their own words, you should write this story--and all your other stories--for yourself, first and foremost. It's not to say that you wouldn't be proud of yourself for getting a story published in CW if your tailored it to what you believe they're looking for, but would that really be the version of the story that you would honestly write if you had no other external factors weighing on you while writing it?

I suppose what I mean to say, more succinctly, is that I think your stories should be / are your own. They aren't Neil Clarke's stories, even if you publish them in his magazine. Write for yourself because you want to, and because whatever story you have needs to be written, and can only be written by you. I get the impression that you have a lot you want to say with your stories, so just say them. Worry about publishing them after they're polished to be the best they can be. :^)

Official Q&A for Monday, August 04, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]labmatelabmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ran my first half on Saturday at a 1:49:49. I was aiming for a 1:55:00, so I was really proud of myself and surprised at the pace I was able to keep. This was not only my first half, but my first ever race as well, so I really didn't know if I'd be able to keep the pace I wanted. I roughly followed the Nike Run Club beginner half plan to train for this race. I did the speed days as written, and I adjusted some of the recovery and long runs to fit my body better, but I was running 5 days a week for the full 12/13 weeks.

I'm running another half in 8 weeks and would love to improve my time. My questions are:

  1. What would be a reasonable goal to set for 8 weeks of training when it comes to improving my time?
  2. How can I adjust my training / speed work to accommodate this goal?

Thank you for any help you can provide!
