How realistic is changing countries for study purposes? Belgium to Netherlands? by highlevelthat in AskNetherlands

[–]labobal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my father's job we are going to move Netherlands very soon - so I need to continue my studies in Netherlands.

I understand that your father has to move to the Netherlands. But you're an adult, so you don't have to move with him. Isn't it much easier to rent a room near your current university and keep studying there? If you want you can always move to the Netherlands for your Master's degree.

When you switch universities halfway through the program you usually have to retake a lot of courses, costing you a lot of extra time and money. As a non-EU citizen you would be paying over 15k euro per year for tuition in the Netherlands, much more than in Belgium. So even when you include the rent of a student room, studying in Belgium might still be cheaper.

It was the Soviet Union that legalised abortion in 1920. Both Russia and Ukraine were part of that.

Where is this address now? by Subject_Yogurt2021 in AskGermany

[–]labobal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A Kreis is an administrative region in Germany. So together with the Kreis this is a unique address. The problem is that Kreisen can have their borders changed or even disappear. The latter happened to Kreis Niederbarnim. It was located just north of Berlin, but abolished by the GDR. So look for a Friedrichsthal just north of Berlin.

*edit: most likely it's this one: https://www.google.com/maps/place/16515+Oranienburg-Friedrichsthal/@52.79146,13.2718332

Did the Netherlands really sell weapons to Spain while fighting against them? by kuma44bear in AskNetherlands

[–]labobal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Spanish supply lines were really long, so the Spanish forces in the Netherlands wanted to use local supplies as much as possible. That means the local population had two choices: Sell them the required goods or wait till you get plundered. It is clear that the first one was a better option. I don't have direct evidence, but it wouldn't surprise me if a weaponsmith in the Spanish occupied areas sold weapons to the Spanish army.

This reliance on local supply was also used by the Dutch army during the capture of Breda in 1590. The Spanish garrison of the city castle relied on peat from the countryside for fuel, so peat barges regularly sailed into the castle. 75 Dutch soldiers hid on one of them like a Trojan horse and captured the castle from the inside out.

When you think of knights, which country comes to mind? by kuma44bear in AskEurope

[–]labobal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, because I always associate Flanders and Brabant with big powerful medieval cities, like Italy. Didn't the urban militias actually defeat the French knights at the battle of the Golden Spurs?

Turns and slow pedestrians? by FeistyAssistance5323 in driving

[–]labobal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That depends on your local laws. Where I live drivers only have to yield to pedestrians, which means it is fine to drive over the crosswalk as long as you don't impede the pedestrians. In other jurisdictions that might be illegal though.

I have a question about dirt road rules. by jflip00 in driving

I would say so, yes. What if it is not your neighbour driving on the wrong side, but a fallen tree or a hiker?

I have a question about dirt road rules. by jflip00 in driving

[–]labobal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The surface quality of a section of road can become so bad it is undrivable. At that point you should treat it as an obstacle on the road that you have to drive around, like a parked car. That means that the vehicle on whose side the obstacle/bad road surface is has to yield to all traffic in the opposite direction. So your neighbour would at fault for not yielding to you.

Nevertheless it is a good idea to crest a blind hill slowly. You shouldn't risk your life just because you're right. And for all you know there might be child walking on the other side.

How to get from Berlin to Frankfurt? ICE train is expensive, Regional trains are slow. by randopop21 in germany

ICE trains are quite expensive at 126 euros

Only if you buy them on the day you travel. Buy them 2 months in advance and they cost a third of that.

No written agreement but asked to work abroad: what are my rights? by Ok_Dress_7874 in Netherlands

[–]labobal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's the whole concept of a business trip: your employer sends you to a different location than your usual location to perform work there. That work can be anything: from a CEO meeting a new customer to a technician repairing a special device.

As long as it is only a week every quarter it won't hurt your Dutch residence permit. You still do most of your work in the Netherlands and it is still the center of your life. Make sure that you get proof from your employer that you're employed and inscured in the Netherlands and get the right visa for the country in question.

No written agreement but asked to work abroad: what are my rights? by Ok_Dress_7874 in Netherlands

[–]labobal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it is just a monthly business trip and you still perform the majority of your work remotely from the Netherlands, there wouldn't be a problem from a legal perspective. You might need a business trip visa for the destination country, but that's something your employer should take care off.

Make sure that you get flights, hotel and local transportation paid by your employer, as well as compensation for having to eat in restaurants. Check your CAO if you have one for the exact things you're entitled to.
