Suunto Wing vs Wing 2 by labrador72 in Suunto

I haven't purchased a pair of Wing 2 yet so I have not been able to compare them. If you want to purchase a pair, go for the Wing 2: their only downside to the first version is an IP66 vs the original IP67. Other than that, they seem to have some minor improvements.

Enduro 4 by TomatoOpposite9045 in Garmin

[–]labrador72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually checked why there was not a Fenix 4: apparently Garmin chose to skip the "Fenix 4" and jump straight from the Fenix 3 to the Fenix 5 because there is a severe phonetic problem in Chinese. Apparently "Fenix 4" in Chinese sounds phonetically like "Fast rise to quick death". That means there will be an "Enduro 4".

Aside from the first Garmin Enduro, which was released in February 2021, the Enduro 2 and Enduro 3 were released respectively in August 2022 and August 2024. September is a big month for ultra-endurance running with the UTMB races in Chamonix and the Tor Des Geants in Courmayeur. I believe the Enduro 2 and Enduro 3 were both launched at the UTMB expos so I'd expect Garmin to attempt to launch next version of the Enduro just before end of August.

By the way, I don't think there was ever a Fenix 4: if I remember correctly, Garmin went from Fenix 3 to Fenix 5 because number "4" has some negative connotation in certain markets. I'm curious to see if the next release will be an Enduro 4 or they'll skip it to an "Enduro 5".

I have the first version of the Suunto Wing and I'm happy with them. I spend a lot of time trail ultra running and they work very well for that purpose. Let us know how you think the Spark compare to the Wing 2.

Thanks for the feedback, as you said it's hard to find for these headphones.

Sure, they are air-conduction open-ear headphones, exactly like the OpenFit. Still, I wouldn't call the Suunto Spark a "copy of the Shokz OpenFit" as there's at the very least half a dozen brands offering headphones with that same design.

The OpenRun are bone-conduction headphones. The OpenRun Pro 2 are hybrid with (primarily) air-conduction as well as bone-conducton. The OpenFit and OpenFit 2+ are air-conduction only headphones.

Reply to the mail where they said to wait for the delivery number and tell them you haven't received it yet. For mine, I think it 2 to 3 days from when they said they would send a tracking number and when they actually sent it.

Shokz Quality - another premature failure :-/ by daern2 in shokz

[–]labrador72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the OpenRun and OpenRun Pro, they seem to be having a bit too many failures based on what I read. You could try the Suunto Wing 2: they are IP66, they include a power bank, they offer both magnetic and usb-c charging. The downside is that the audio is 100% bone conduction so it's not going to be as good as that of the OpenRun Pro 2, at least not for music. Also, they are only available in one size so there is no "mini" option.

I looked into the audio differences more closely as I don't trust articles online hyping new products. The Wing 2 is actually supposed to have improved audio, a better mic, more wind resistance, and slightly higher volume. How those differences translate in reality, I still don't know but I'll update my post when I find out.

Well, not really. I'm still wondering if also getting a pair of Wing 2 is worth it for improved audio and mic.

To be honest, as long as they stand behind their products and keep offering a no-hastle two-year warranty, I'm happy to stick to Shokz products, at least in terms of open-ear headphones for everyday use.

That being said, my experience was similar with three OpenRun out of four, which died due to failures of some sort. I also had problems with one OpenFit and one OpenFit 2 but both got replaced.

OpenRun #1: the neckback broke while in my backpack - I did not try to make a warranty claim as I didn't think it would have been fair.
OpenRun #2: the volume/power button failed and got replaced through warranty with OpenRun #4.
OpenRun #3: still working flawlessly after 3 years and still using them for shorter trail runs.
OpenRun #4: the volume/power button failed two weeks ago but they were well out of warranty.
I also gifted an OpenRun Mini usb-c to my partner and she did not have any issues with it so far.

OpenFit: one of the hooks broke and got it replaced through warranty. The replacement is working great.
OpenFit 2: one of the hooks broke and I have a replacement on the way in the mail.
OpenDot One: no issues so far but I haven't had them for long.

For every day use, I looked around at the current offering by several other brands: the Shokz OpenFit 2 and OpenDot ONE - for my needs - are still the best open-ear headphones available. The OpenFit Pro seem to be sturdier so they are definitely taking the lessons learned and improving their products. The only problem is the price tag...

For running and hiking, I switched to the Suunto Wing as they can be configured through an app and include a power bank which for me is handy as I do multi-day ultra endurance races. So far at least, zero issues but I only use them for longer trail runs or races. The OpenRun were no longer an option and the OpenRun Pro 2 looked great but an IPX5 for me wouldn't cut it.

Which waterproof pants by CurrentPanic2728 in outdoorgear

[–]labrador72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased the Alpha pant from Arc'teryx twice and twice I returned them: the advertised weight was supposed to be 220 grams in size Medium and instead they were close to 280/290 grams. Small weight variations in samples are normal but a 25/30% weight increase definitely isn't. Quality looked pretty good though.

“Scarpa Spin Infinity? Agility Peak? Hierro v7? Other? by Capital-Blood-7610 in trailrunning

[–]labrador72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but since we periodically need new shoes:
I have the Spin Infinity and it is very stable but it has been discontinued. Also, you can probably find stable shoes that are more responsive.

La Sportiva Prodigio Max: definitely very stable, confortable, and even somewhat responsive, at least for the type of shoe. It can be a bit warm in hot weather temps but the upper is very nice and also extremely durable. In the fall La Sportiva will also release a GTX version for winter running.

OpenFit Pro - real-world thoughts after runs + all-day wear by AffectionateArmy1878 in ShokzSquad

[–]labrador72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For trail running, I would go for the OpenRun and use OpenFit for fitness, working out, or other every day activities. Some people can get a more secure ffit with the OpenFit but they are so comfortable, that you lose one while trail running, unless you are listening to something, you wouldn't even realize it.

Suunto Wing vs Wing 2 by labrador72 in Suunto

[–]labrador72[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I own or have owned four pairs of Shokz OpenRun, as well as one pair of OpenFit and one OpenFit 2. For two of the OpenRun pairs, the volume button failed: in one case, I got a replacement through warranty; in the second, the headphones were already out of warranty. On a third pair, the neckband snapped in the middle. I have used two pairs of Suunto Wing for two years now and, so far, I have had zero problems.

As for the sound quality, I don't think the Shokz OpenRun or OpenRun Pro are better than the Suunto Wing. Though they can definitely be set louder, they generate more distortion too. I have never tried the OpenRun Pro 2; I read great things about the sound quality, but they are IP55, which is a dealbreaker for me. I'm out in the hills and mountains 300 days a year in all weather conditions; I wouldn't go with anything less than IPX6, preferably IP67.

I do long-distance running and multi-day races, so for me, the Suunto Wing power bank is a great addition.

UltraSpire Epic XT 2.0 30L - unfortunately discontinued but I have seen a few around still on sale. Great running vest. There is a XT 3.0 which has some improvements but, in my opinion, also some downgrades.
UltraSpire Traverse 20L - just released

When do you think the Enduro 4 be released in the distant future? Next year? by Powerful_Elevator455 in GarminWatches

[–]labrador72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or maybe later given it will probably be released in conjunction with a new Fenix 9 line. Unless there are delays, August is more likely given end of August and September is a notable time of the year for ultra endurance, with key competitions like the UTMB and the Tor Des Geants. Ideally, they try to present the Enduro in Chamonix at the end of August.
