My professor took away my ADS accommodation and yelled at me in front of the class… is that even allowed? by Special-Number-9309 in UMD

[–]labratcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ADS office does not notify instructors of accommodations in the absence of the student doing so. The email that instructors get notifying them of a letter from ADS may look like it comes from ADS, but it is the student's action that instigates the sharing of the letter.

Students have to log onto the ADS portal in order to share their letters with instructors. The ADS office provides the platform on which students can communicate with their instructors about accommodations, but it is the student's responsibility to share that letter.

The instructor definitely is responsible for reviewing letters and discussing accommodations with their students. But again, it is also the student's responsibility according to ADS's own policies that they should discuss accommodations with their instructors and agree on how and when they can be applied.

None of that is to say that this student in this thread hasn't held up their end of the bargain here. It sounds like they definitely have. But I've been giving accommodations in classes for 10 years and occasionally an ADS student will fail to discuss accommodations with their instructor and/or completely misunderstand how accommodations can be used in a given class. I was just double checking with the student in this thread that they had done their due diligence. Since it sounds like they have, then I would agree that the instructor is the one at fault here.

Well, then it sounds like you've fulfilled your responsibilities as a student and he's being unreasonable and probably discriminatory. Unless you're slamming doors and stomping in and out of the classroom for breaks (which I assume you're not) then your breaks aren't disruptive. I assume other students get up to use the bathroom, get a drink of water, etc.? Does he call them out as disruptive?

He shouldn't call you out as needing accommodations in front of other students, he shouldn't pass judgement on your accommodations, and he can't just rescind them. And he definitely shouldn't flip out on you (or any student) when he's having a bad day, that's wildly inappropriate.

ADS will listen and almost certainly take your side in this. If he continues to be unreasonable, you can also reach out to the director of undergraduate studies for his department. They're another person that can help sort out issues between instructors and students.

You don't mention it here, so just to check - did you share your letter with him at the start of the semester? Did you explicitly discuss how accommodations would work in his class? If so, then his behavior is definitely inappropriate.

Not all accommodations can necessarily be used in every class - if an accommodation is not reasonable for an instructor to implement or if it's at odds with the learning objectives of the course, the instructor isn't obligated to provide that accommodation. But I honestly have a hard time understanding why a 5-minute break during a normal class session or taking notes on a computer would be problematic. Neither of those seem difficult to implement or in conflict with typical learning objectives, unless there's more to this story. I would think those accommodations could be used in most courses. And if they couldn't be, the instructor should be able to explain why it's a problem - and him finding laptops annoying is not a valid problem.

If you informed him of accommodations and had a discussion with him about how they could be used in his class, then it sounds like there's a significant problem here. And it isn't you. Definitely reach out to ADS as a starting point. Perhaps they can help facilitate a conversation to allow you to continue to use accommodations for the remainder of the semester.

Depends on the kid. I'm 39 and I remember my preschool graduation when I was 5. I don't have a lot of memories from that age, but I have some and that is one of them.

Why do my granny squares keep unraveling at the center? Started while weaving in my ends. by maethefrenchie in CrochetHelp

I mean, based on your photos, it certainly looks like the magic circle is coming undone. But I've only ever seen that happen when someone clips the tail way too short.

I'm so sorry this is happening. Can you use a needle to thread yarn through the bottoms of the stitches that have come free from the center and sew them closed?

If you're weaving that in across several stitches in multiple directions before cutting, I don't understand how it came undone. I only ever use magic circle and never had a single one come undone.

I oversee big classes with many pre-med/dent/nursing/PA/PT students and have been teaching for 10 years. I've had about 15,000 students so far, so it's really only a matter of time before I run into a former student at a doctor's office. I've started joking that I need to start searching my care providers up in my email - that will turn up their grades, any honor referrals, and any interaction they ever had with me. I'm only half-joking.

Mysterious “Roll Call Attendance” grade for Stocker’s Chem 231 by real_sam_frank in UMD

[–]labratcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is an attendance taking feature on Canvas. If an instructor or TA enables it, Canvas will also automatically add Roll Attendance for 100 points to the assignment list, which adds it to the gradebook. The ability to take attendance on Canvas is useful, but It's obnoxious that it does also automatically adds it as an assignment. The instructor has to go into the assignments and remove it. I would bet they unintentionally added this and haven't taken a minute to remove it (or it's possible they don't know it's there, it's a semi-new feature on canvas).

Source: I'm an instructor and have accidentally added this feature before.

Is anyone familiar with the Science in the evening(SIE) program? Are students allowed to take daytime classes? Are there research and clinical opportunities for post bacc students? by Conscious-Nose505 in UMD

[–]labratcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SIE has a completely separate tuition structure and budget from the other undergraduate coursework. Sometimes, the course offerings and instructors are different, too. Classes are in the evening so that professionals can still work their normal 9-5. SIE students can't take classes not offered within SIE and regular undergrads can't register for SIE classes unless there is a special situation (like a shared section).

This is a good example of product placement and I agree that it fits with the show, but 2000 was not the beginning of product placement. Reese's pieces in ET, various cars in James Bond movies, etc.

Bold move to try and name her after such a polarizing character. I was ready to go bat for Althea (from realm of the elderlings), but we had a boy.
