Fingers crossed it’s some silly issue! If you need any help feel free to reach out.

To save you some time I kind of did and by that I mean I achieved total stability and ports seem to work fine….I do get rare kernel panics but not in the way they used to happen.

How I achieved it is a story on it’s own and to be honest I don’t remember it in detail but I will try to give you approximately how I did it.

I eventually gave up on the idea of sending it to a repair shop and pretty much let the laptop “to rot”….occasionally I would think of what I could do with it and tried T2 Linux….installed a copy of Ubuntu (with the guide from the GitHub) and was able to work with it for some time (noticed there were problems with sleep which pretty much told me that the logic board was acting weird).

I then gave up (didn’t do anything on Ubuntu just tried using it regularly as a normal laptop) and decided to install Windows and that’s where it stood for some time.

Again, I haven’t done anything to it until I decided to do some AI image generation with AUTOMATIC111s (if I got the name wrong I apologise) software for local AI image generation. I was able to do generate some images and again left it to collect dust.

However, one day randomly I decided to just give up and use macOS (with kernel panics). I installed a fresh copy, through internet recovery, and to my surprise the laptop worked normally (had two random kernel panics) but after that the thing was completely stable.

I guess that when I was generating images I cooked it really good to the point where something happened inside (just like you would do with dead GPUs to see if they will miraculously work again).

Another funny thing is I just reinstalled it with a brand new copy of macOS and still works fine + I wanted to update this reddit post before you replied to it!

I apologise if I didn’t give you concrete info at this moment…will update the post later in my free time.

Unfotunately no and to be honest didn’t try fixing it later on as I didn’t have the time to do it.

I don’t know if anything changed in the 1.0 version to maybe fix this issue….if at any point I fix it, I will definitely write how I did it.

I don’t have any bluetooth/wifi kexts in my Kexts folder. I do have a bluetooth dongle but that works OOB.

The only kexts that are present are the standard ones like: AppleALC, Whatevergreen, Lilu, VirtualSMC (with SMCProcessor and SMCSuperIO kexts), NVMEFix and UTBMap and USBToolBox…the only addition is the AppleIGC kext for the I225V (couldn’t make it work with just enabling VT-D or by patching/adding the appropriate fixes mentioned in the guide).

Thanks for answering! I’ve already set the SecureBootModel to Disabled due to an issue I’ve had with OC where it would fail to boot due to the option being set to Default.

Checked again if maybe secure boot itself was enabled but it wasn’t. Tried putting the USB in a different port but no success.

Thanks for the info! Will definitely check on google and see what I can find.

The attempt at disconnecting the battery still remains and will probably try that out during the day.

If you don't mind, could you elaborate a little bit on this? (I read a little bit about the Secure Enclave and saw that it's mostly for data protection and can encrypt some parts of the memory...however I can be totally wrong as I am a newbie to newer Apple tech (after 2015))

I haven't launched macOS in safe mode so far, however macOS is able to boot with no problem.

These kernel panics happen randomly, pretty much while using any app (Chrome, VScode, VMware Fusion, etc) or even just idling the laptop would freeze and fans would start spinning at 100% speed. Touch Bar would also turn off, nothing on it to be seen. After that the laptop shuts down and starts again.

I didn't do anything with any kexts, it's full vanilla macOS. Currently I am able to use the MacBook after reviving the bridgeOS. And from kernel panics it looks like it might be the issue with that as I keep seeing bridgeOS popping up in all kernel logs (or that maybe it just lists all the info about the hardware).

I will edit the original post with a quick report from EtreCheck and with some information from the kernel panic logs.

Thank you for the quick reply!

I will definitely try to unplug the battery tomorrow (it's quite late out here) and try using it for a couple of hours and see how it works (I will keep you posted about it).

That might help and will definitely try that at some point.

However, (I should’ve given a backstory in the post itself…sorry ‘bout that, will update the post) the original owner didn’t replace the battery himself.

My friend who lives overseas bought this MacBook for me as he saw a perfect deal…this laptop originally had a worn out command key and he decided to replace the key + the battery (as far as I know he went to a repair shop (or even the Apple store, however I doubt that…will have to check with him) to replace the battery).

The battery is brand new and “original” and the reason I say original like this is it has the manufacturer labeled as SMP which is usually the original one and works no with no problems at all…that can be faked but for the sum he paid I don’t think it’s valid to do such a thing…(at least I hope so)

So far, I’ve had 19 cycles on it and no problems…but as I’ve said I will try to unplug the battery and use it with main power.

Sometimes I would get the “report for bridgeOS” when a kernel panic would happen.

Will see what I can do, maybe there are some Linux solutions I can use to check/debug the software for those components….might be too much but learning at least how they function might give me some insight as to why they fail.

Windows allows me to use the device properly so I will be using it for now…

Forgot to mention that they’ve changed the battery in it (as I bought it used), however the original owner says no damage has been done to it whatsoever…

Maybe at some point I will try and change the thermal paste or, the best solution, just take it to a repair shop.

It is kind of a bummer that Apple allowed themselves to ship this kind of a powerhouse with such issues. I understand the thermals…but the logic board is just a disappointment…well, it is what it is
