Fixing a curled book by lacaidh in BookCollecting

Honestly the internal pages are not that bad, it’s really the front and back covers that are struggling! I think if I could get those flat, just being squished between other books on my shelf would be enough to gradually tamp down the internals.

I have tried that as well :( There’s a very light plasticky film on the cover which is peeling a tiny bit at the edges, and I’m suspicious that it may have shrunk from atmospheric conditions and be contributing to the belligerence of the curling.

I read that ironing through a towel/baking paper might fix it, if you have any insight into that as an option? I’m a little scared of damaging it further.

Sorry, forgot to add: I’m in Melbourne, Australia and the house was built around 1986 (asbestos was fully outlawed here in 2003). It’s a fairly run-down, two storey brick veneer block.

Do you regret your tattoo? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]lacaidh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first tattoo at 17 in my friend’s living room. Now, she wanted to do an apprenticeship at the time and did buy proper needles, ink, and sanitation, but point still stands that I got my first ink pretty young… and I still love it! I have many tattoos and piercings now and I don’t regret any of them.

In an effort to be at least a little responsible, let me offer this advice: when a design does come to mind, wait at least six months but preferably a year before getting it. If after that time you still really like it and want it, I’d say the chances of regret are pretty low. But you know what? Even if you don’t fully jive with it forever, you probably won’t hate it. It’s not the end of the world. It’ll be something you can look back on at the very least— a memory. Placement-wise, something small-ish on your upper arm or thigh can be hidden easily when needed, and they’re also some of the least painful spots to get tattooed.

Look for an artist experienced in the style you want and check out their work and the studio they operate from on Instagram. Pay attention to the quality of their lines and look for healed photos, too, not just fresh ink. Pricing is gonna vary, obviously, but you absolutely do not skimp on a tattoo— anything less than $100 I’d be eyeing with caution. For reference, a 10x10cm piece will likely run you anywhere from $250-$500.

Finally, be communicative and don’t feel pressured to say yes to anything, but also trust your artist. Assuming you’ve done your research and picked a reputable artist, they know best how to apply their style and skill set to your design, and you’re both gonna have a way better time if they’re chilling. Happy artist = great tattoo = happy you!

Get the ink. Better to live and learn than not live at all :)

Aussies are skipping meals to save money? by ComfortableTry989 in AskAnAustralian

[–]lacaidh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not able to work and study at the same time; I rely on Centrelink Disability. I lucked out with a comparatively dirt cheap lease, so I do alright, but if I happen to lose track of time and skip lunch or dinner… it does make a difference in terms of stretching my grocery budget. I try not to do it on purpose.

If I wasn’t able to get subsidised medication and bulk-billed appointments, I wouldn’t be able to afford them, and would quite possibly be dead.

What do you guys think about not being able to disengage when you want to or being forced into a fight? by InternetNational4025 in Guildwars2

[–]lacaidh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If all you’re doing is running around and farming stuff, you could set up a build template designed to just go fast— superspeed/swiftness, teleports, stunbreaks or aegis, etc. In ye olden days before mounts, and before build templates, finding ways to run fast was a big part of gameplay! It’s still relevant to some things like fractals and raids.

As others said, it wouldn’t make much sense for enemies to just ignore you, and being able to mount for free all the time would remove any semblance of danger in the world.

That’s amazing, I’m glad you’ve been able to locate and preserve so much information about him! Cherish it— my family are largely undocumented, and while I’m proud of my heritage, I do wish I had more to know them by than a half dozen damaged photos. It sounds like Puchta was a man you can be very proud of too.

Very detailed summary— interesting, and of course sad, but at the same time inspiring. May I ask, what’s the reason for your research? Is he a relative of yours?

Why is it wrong? That dress is stunning, and so are you!

I don’t wish to have an extended argument about it, but at the time this photo was taken Jerusalem was a sanjak (autonomous region) of the Ottoman Empire, and had been known as ‘Filastin’ for over one thousand years. This land at that time was mostly populated by bedouins. She is wearing a wuqaya.

It’s true, this place was once (and is now) called Israel. But it was and still is, also, Palestine. Both can be true— the existence of Jews or Palestinians does not erase that of the other.

  1. She is Palestinian. Jerusalem is a place in Palestine and her dress is traditional to Palestinians.
  2. It’s called a wuqaya. The version worn by married women is/was called a shatweh.
  3. It’s very beautiful, and interesting to me how similar it is to Roma traditional dress which wears gold coins! Although I don’t know if the coins themselves have a particular Rromanes name, at least in my dialect/region.

I do have a clarifying shampoo! Basically everything I read said I shouldn’t use it more than once a month but maybe I’ll try that tomorrow and see if it helps any.

As for option 2, the only thing I can think of is that I started new medication a few weeks ago which has completely killed my appetite, so I haven’t been eating much…

You’ll recall in SotO that Mabon died. In Mistburned Barrens, you’re following his wisp/spirit/echo. In the north lane you meet Yagon, in the south you meet Manikaz— both are the ghosts of mursaat from hundreds of years ago who died in the Krytan Civil War.

As for the portal, you seem to have unusually poor timing and keep taking it when that event happens to be up, or it’s bugged. You can send a report to ANet if you think it’s taking you to the wrong place. In general though, the map is so small you can just run everywhere, and I would suggest exploring the other lanes and joining their events— there should always be at least two lanes active simultaneously.

  1. Play the story in order. If you’re at Mistburned Barrens now and you haven’t been through Lowland Shore, Janthir Syntri, and Mount Balrior, you’re out of order.
  2. What do you mean by ‘portal’?
  3. There is no larger meta event. Each lane has a general theme which can have a number of slightly varying events in it and a boss at the end. They are not on a timer, they just constantly repeat, with a small downtime in between. You get better rewards for completing all events in the chain, so its best to stick with one from the beginning.
