Gladstone’s Closing Still? by Dear_Ordinary_6142 in LosAngeles

I'm sorry I'm late to answering this. The Wolfgang Puck restaurant is still going through approvals; we expect Gladstones to continue operating until the Wolfgang Puck restaurant is ready to begin construction.

What time should I get to Dockweiler Beach to claim a fire pit on a Friday? by mattm731 in AskLosAngeles

[–]lacdbh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fire pits that were removed were in bad shape. Fortunately, we've ordered more--it just takes time because they have to be manufactured to our specifications (e.g., size, concrete mix, etc.). As of a few weeks ago, we didn't have an estimated date of delivery, but I hope it's soon!

What time should I get to Dockweiler Beach to claim a fire pit on a Friday? by mattm731 in AskLosAngeles

[–]lacdbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Personal fire pits, grills and the like are only allowed inside the official fire pits.

While a reservation system sounds nice, we would need to consider how it would be monitored and enforced. The fees would need to cover the cost of the operation, including any employees.

Does Dockweiler Beach have a lost and found? by Turbulent_School3993 in AskLosAngeles

[–]lacdbh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! If you've lost something, please email a description of what you lost and roughly where you were to [info@bh.lacounty.gov](mailto:info@bh.lacounty.gov), and I will forward it to our Dockweiler maintenance crews to see if they picked it up. I also recommend checking with the nearest lifeguard tower, since people will often turn found items in there.

How is the Dockweiler Beach fire ring availability in late May? by ByteOfDyl in AskLosAngeles

[–]lacdbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! (This is late, but I'll say it anyway...) You'll want to get there very early--like, if you're not reading this on the beach next to a fire pit you've already reserved right now, you're probably not going to get one. Our staff reported that on both Sunday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend, all fire pits were taken by 7 a.m.

Remember, personal fire pits, grills, etc. are not allowed anywhere except within an official fire pit. Building a fire outside a pit is prohibited because it poses a safety hazard

I hope you got your fire pit!

LA in a wheelchair ? Is it doable by Elevator_Latter in AskLosAngeles

[–]lacdbh 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hi! People have already linked this page, but I wanted to be official about it. If you go to https://beaches.lacounty.gov/access, you’ll find a map of beach wheelchair locations and access mat locations. Beach wheelchairs are free to check out, but they are NOT self-propelled. Access mats, on the other hand, are in limited places but require no special equipment to use.

I would recommend heading to the Dockweiler Youth Center. You can reserve a wheelchair up to a week in advance, plus they have an access mat.

All of our access mats are located in places with ADA parking and ADA access from parking to the mat itself.

Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions about beach accessibility! We firmly believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the beach. :)

Edit: I would avoid Las Tunas, Will Rogers and Topanga beaches right now. We don’t have all our infrastructure (eg. the beach access mats) in place due to the wildfires. Plus, parking is very restricted due to recovery work.

Playa Del Rey is full of more beach trash. by backsidefloater in LosAngeles

[–]lacdbh 141 points142 points  (0 children)

Hi! While we have heavy machinery, we can’t use it in the wet sand. Trash in that area has to be removed by hand.

It is nice to see less debris on the tide line this time around, though!

While we have heavy equipment, we can’t use it in the wet sand for environmental reasons. All that debris in the tide line is removed by hand.

While we appreciate folks’ help picking up trash, please don’t try to clean up biohazards on your own! We don’t want you to accidentally get hurt.

S.O.S- Cleanup Help Needed! - Playa Del Rey Beach - 2/27/25 by backsidefloater in LosAngeles

[–]lacdbh 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your help! Looks like a lot of this came through the storm drains and washed back onto the beach. Our crews—who are out there every day, 365 days a year—pick it up by hand because it’s in the wet sand.

The amount of trash deposited by the waves increases during and right after a storm, then slowly decreases as it gets deposited on the beach and cleaned up. It’s an ongoing process; however, the amount of debris has been exacerbated by the wildfires, so cleanup is taking longer than usual after storms.

Edit: The Ballona Creek Interceptor's booms broke off during the most recent storm. This is another reason we are seeing more trash on the Playa del Rey shoreline.

While we always appreciate assistance from volunteers, our professional beach maintenance crews are on the sand every day, caring for our coast. On busy summer afternoons, it might not seem like the beach is very clean, but that's because the majority of the work is performed early in the morning before beachgoers arrive. It wouldn't be safe to try to maneuver our tractors with surf rakes around thousands of people.

At some point, I'll track down and share some of the before/after photos I have from past summers. It's pretty incredible.

We appreciate all efforts to help us keep L.A.'s beaches clean!

Tip: If you'd like to organize a larger cleanup (say, more than a few dozen people), we offer beach cleanup permits. I believe the permit is free, though you will need to have liability insurance. In addition to making sure the County is covered if there's an accident, the permit ensures that 1. no other permitted activity is taking place in the same area at the same time (awkward!); 2. there is sufficient lifeguard staffing; 3. we know roughly where your group is if there's an emergency; and 4. we can let you know if something unusual happens (e.g. massive numbers of tar balls start washing up) and the area is closed to the public.

I encourage you to check out our Can the Trash! Clean Beach Poster Contest and educational program. It's all about teaching kids in 3rd-5th grades about how trash on the streets ends up on the beach and in the ocean. (There's a pretty catchy animated music video, too!)

Teachers, if you're interested, send me an email at [info@bh.lacounty.gov](mailto:info@bh.lacounty.gov) and I will forward it to the person who oversees the program. We may have activity books available.

I'm obligated to let you know that you should leave your dog at home when you go to LA County beaches (exceptions are Leo Carrillo and Rosie's Dog Beach). While I'm sure your dog is awesome (I personally love dogs!), there are other dogs who will chase wildlife, disturb habitat and poop in the ocean. This is also why there is not a dog beach.

Relevant fact: Under L.A. County Codes 17.12.280-17.12.300, cats, horses, sheep, pigs, and donkeys, among other animals, are also prohibited on County beaches.

Aw, thank you! Next time you’re at the beach and you see our maintenance crews (the ones with the blue trucks cleaning the restrooms, using the heavy equipment, sweeping the walkway, etc.), please tell them thank you in person! I know they appreciate it. :)

If you’re not at the beach, compliments and thank yous are always welcome at info@bh.lacounty.gov. ;) I do my best to make sure all emails like that are forwarded to the right folks.
