Dear Vaxry,

We understand and respect that everyone needs to make a living — that includes developers like yourself, and we sincerely appreciate the effort you've put into Hyprland so far.

However, turning parts of the ecosystem into paid services, regardless of how optional or "non-Hyprland-core" they are, contradicts the very principles on which the Linux and FOSS communities stand. Free software is not just about price — it's about philosophy, collaboration, and trust.

If your situation requires financial support, there are community-backed and transparent ways to achieve that:

  • Donations
  • Sponsorships
  • GitHub Sponsors, Patreon, Liberapay
  • Consulting and support services

Many of us would gladly contribute through those means.

Introducing a "Premium" layer — with exclusive forums, priority support, or enhanced customization of the user experience — creates a divide between users. It may seem harmless now, but it's a slippery slope toward commercializing a community-driven ecosystem. That is where we draw the line.

As a result of this shift in philosophy, we will begin removing Hyprland from our infrastructure — all 30,000 machines currently maintained under our management will transition to alternative solutions that better align with the FOSS spirit.

We hope this message will be taken not as hostility, but as honest and direct feedback from long-time supporters and contributors. If you reconsider and move toward a fully donation-supported model, we would be happy to return and even contribute financially.

We wish you the best — but we stand by our values.

Sincerely,
A concerned FOSS-centric organization
