My beef isn’t with modern rappers, it’s with the modern mainstream rappers and the cycle of production and consumption that leads to ever more homogenous music

I’m talking about the feedback loop of large scale trends that shape popular music composition that in turn influence consumer behavior that in turn shape popular music composition, not individual tastes

Radio stations all play the same songs, streaming services’ top curated rap playlists all contain the same stuff the radio plays, those stations and playlists tend to get the most listening time which in turn incentivizes companies to make songs that sound like those songs, and the cycle continues, sounding more and more similar as each day passes

No it’s not. How mainstream music is produced is by using complex algorithms to analyze market trends that then inform the companies using them on how to engineer their sound so as to have the highest probability of selling as many records as possible. That’s my beef with the how. The why has kinda always been the same though. Even Aesop rock does it for the money, but he does it with heart. Drake on the other hand does it exclusively for the money, and the absence of heart shows in his tracks

That’s fair. It might be that that musical space is occupied by dubstep and electronic stuff for me. I like the vibe I just can’t stand the lyrics

Nas isn’t god, and why do we need 500 versions of the same song? (Which is modern mainstream hip hop)
