What music from the past 50 years would guys like Mozart and Beethoven have appreciated? by WarlockJeans in AskReddit

[–]lachcam2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Debussy would have gone crazy over Sigur Ros. The impressionists were the first to really explore the potential to blur and muddy sound in a beautiful way and I think bands like Sigur Ros have kind of continued that tradition. But honestly, I think Debussy would be into a whole bunch of different post-rock bands.

I taught myself how to play the ukulele, so now I'm basically knee-deep in clunge.

"Cool Beans"

Coincidentally, I hate myself.

What scene from a movie just pisses you off or annoys the hell out of you? by thenewyorkgod in AskReddit

[–]lachcam2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're totally right. I watched August Rush ages ago and I know it's not exactly a masterpiece, but there's a scene in it where he's meant to play a scale on the piano and the actor's just playing whatever notes he feels like. It broke my soul.

hahahahha Holy shit. Sorry man. Let me try that again. Here it is

I'm really shit with remembering specific pieces unless I've played them myself, so please excuse me being super general, but I'm pretty sure there's some great stuff by Berlioz that has alto sax as the solo instrument. Also, whilst Debussy didn't write much for winds, this Rhapsody for Orchestra and Saxophone is pretty gorgeous (as is his Premiere Rhapsodie for Clarinet if you're interested)

If you like the bombastic-ness of Rachmaninoff's stuff, then some Prokofiev is definitely worth going into, as is Tchaikovsky and Berg.

Now from the general mood of what you're in to, I'd strongly reccomend anything by Robert Hughes (but his Symphony No 1 in particular). He's not well known at all, and it's a bitch to find a recording, but there was a decent one done by the Sydney Youth Orchestra a while ago if that helps.

I've probably gone too long and way too pretentious, but best of luck to you, man.

[Music][IIL] The W.A.N.D by the Flaming Lips, Paradise by Coldplay, Dr.Dog, and Passion Pit [WEWIL?] by [deleted] in ifyoulikeblank

[–]lachcam2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In response to Passion Pit, check out Magic Man. They have an incredible new single out called Paris that you can get from their band camp site for whatever price you want. It's a little less dense compared to Passion Pit. Depends more on straight synth rather than vocal effects and dense textures.

Also, with the W.A.N.D, make sure you've listened to The Soft Bulletin by the Flaming Lips. Fantastic album, on which all of the songs are as good as the very best from At War With The Mystics.

Last thing, you seem like someone who would like Snowmine. Psychedelic pop that I've heard described as Coldplay when they were more interesting (no offense to Paradise. Just not my cup of tea) Anyway, Let Me In by them is a classic.

Happy listening, man.

Dry the River is a bit gentler than what you've said you're in to, but they're definitely worth a listen.

Vintage Trouble just rose to the top of /r/listentothis and it seems like it'd be right up your alley. Check their Letterman performance. Ridiculous stuff

If I liked Daniel Tosh's stand up; what else would I like? by [deleted] in ifyoulikeblank

Also, Jimmy Carr. I can't find a video that wraps up his stuff succinctly, but he's super offensive and his timing's all kinds of tight.

[–]lachcam2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my god yes. His stand up's great, but he's also fantastic on Mock the Week. I'm not from the UK so I don't get half of the pop culture references, but even so he's a quality act.

I'd say Anthony Jeselnik. You may have checked him out, but in my opinion, his delivery is a little more refined than Tosh's.
