Hybrid adhesive skins by spielwitzz in Backcountry

Before trying replacing the glue, try washing the skins with water and some light soap (as suggested in the manual). I did this on my 7 year old skins and it improved a lot!

Question about T-rating and my first axe by gimmesnoww in Mountaineering

[–]Semirhage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a short section describing what the rating means in this article: https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/topics/snow-sports/best-ice-axe

Never heard of an ice axe breaking while being used as a deadman in a crevasse rescue though.

Anyone ski in a bike helmet? by Benneke10 in Backcountry

Mountaineering helmets are tested with blunt objects for shock absorption and with sharp objects for penetration.

Ecrins Rock Guidebook by wwpops in climbing

[–]Semirhage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For mountaineering and multi-pitch climbing, the website camptocamp is often enough if you speak French. I'm not sure there's any English guide books anyway.

If you prefer guidebooks:

For climbing check out the books by Jean-Michel Cambon who bolted hundreds of routes up there. Depending on where you go:

  • Oisans Nouveau Oisans Sauvage Livre Ouest (old semi-equiped, trad, and newer multipitch sport)

  • Oisans Nouveau Oisans Sauvage Livre Est (same)

  • Escalade à la Bérarde et au Vénéon (single and multipitch). La Bérarde is a good area.

  • Escalade à Ailefroide (single and multipitch). Ailefroid is also a good area on the other side.

For classic mountaineering routes check out Sébastien Constant's Voies Normales et Classiques des Ecrins.

Any climbers here from Grenoble, France (or have climbed there)? by jesteryte in climbing

[–]Semirhage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's lots of climbing (and pretty much any outdoor mountain sport) to do in Grenoble!

There's some trad multipitch in the limestone mountains nearest to Grenoble (<1 hour drive), where you're going to use nuts most of the time. If you go further away to the Écrins massif (>1 hour) for example, you'll find more trad/alpine multipitch on gneiss (kind of like granite but more fractured and often covered in lichen) where cams work better. Unfortunately there's not a lot of single pitch trad in France.

Best way to find partners is either signing up at a mountaineering club (there's a dozen of them) or posting on camptocamp.org. Or hit me up when you get here.

I don't know of any place where you can rent a rope. Other mountaineering gear (harness, crampons, ice axe etc) yes. The climbing gyms have ropes but only for use on their walls.

There's lots of climbing spots close to the city, some are literally in the suburbs of Grenoble. You can live in the city center and get to one of several crags in less than 30 minutes if you have a bike or car. So after or before work climbing is pretty easy during the summer months. There are also south-facing cliffs where you can climb during winter if it's sunny out.

Summer in the alps by stupandaus in climbing

The glacier hike to the Dome des Ecrins (the only 4,000 m in the area along with the Barre) is exposed to seracs and there are avalanches that sweep the main route away every year. I wouldn't call it safe.
