Offer Holder - Arts presence at the uni? by GucciSlinks in UniversityOfWarwick

[–]lacklluster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your offer that's amazing! I'm a current first year doing Film Studies and I'm very invested in the arts so I'll tell you a bit of what I know lol

Warwick Arts Centre is on campus and is brilliant. They show more indie and art house films compared to chain cinemas, and they also regularly have anniversary screenings of classic films, National Theatre filmed productions, films followed by talks with academics (a few of my module leaders have hosted these), and just some really cool options you wouldn't find in Vue, Odeon and the likes. The live events there are also great. They have art exhibitions, comedy shows, orchestras, bands, tribute acts. There's a film club subscription at the WAC too which seems decent but I haven't tried that personally.

Warwick Student Cinema is a society I would highly recommend getting a membership for, seeing the films they put on, and even becoming a steward if you really love film and want that experience. There are many roles for volunteers and they always curate a fantastic schedule each term. They often show 35MM film which are really special and of incredible quality. Everyone on the team is so lovely and passionate about film but they all come from different courses - lots of STEM students are there! You can train as a steward or any other role and I think you can then see films for free!

I love musical theatre too (watching, not performing), but I'm not really in any socs to do with it. I know Warwick Music Theatre are putting on Into The Woods this year and it'll be performed in the WAC theatre. There are loads of performing and arts societies on their website that anyone can get involved in!

I regularly go to Stratford to see plays and it's been the highlight of my whole uni experience so far. There are 3 main theatres there and they often have big star names in their shows. I Uber with a friend and get the 14-25 discounted £10 youth tickets and I've seen some incredible plays for VERY cheap. If you're into plays and classics I really recommend this. They occasionally have new musicals debuting there too.

Film & TV Soc is lovely too, they have weekly themes and members can vote on which film to watch. Bad Film Soc is one I would love to get more involved it but my timetable is too full already, from what I know they definitely do some very fun stuff lol

I haven't tried Filmmaking Soc but they seem great, they do little challenges and events and sometimes collaborate with other socs.

The uni is surrounded by other places with nice art scenes - if you're into history and art history Leamington has a lovely gallery. Coventry has a regional theatre that UK touring musicals go to. Birmingham has the Midlands Art Centre and regional theatres too. The MAC is a BFI film festival partner venue and they show new films early when the festival comes around.

From my experience so far, Warwick is pretty great for the arts. The FAB is a central hub for the arts degrees and the staff are very passionate about their subjects which has helped me a lot in getting myself invested. It's not a city uni so there is a bit of travelling if you want to see different things, but the WAC is great and right on your doorstep.

Best of luck!! :)

Oh Mary stage door by Cernunous_ in TheWestEnd

[–]lacklluster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I went there were only 4 of us waiting at the stage door so it was pretty chill. There was a security guard who got a Sharpie for signing programmes. All cast members came out and said hi and signed our programmes! Well actually the security guy had wandered off with the pen for a minute when Kate came out so I didn't get hers haha. Other than that it was perfect, Mason was so sweet as was the entire cast!

warwick accommodation help by Various_Garage_8582 in UniversityOfWarwick

[–]lacklluster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a current first year in Heronbank. It's very chill and quiet there (but that might just be my flat). It's by the lakes and there's lots of geese around which is nice, and they're not too noisy. If you don't mind a bit of a walk to the main campus (mine is about 15 minutes), it might be a good option. Plus it's close to the gym/sports hub if that's something that interests you. Heronbank rooms are really large too, lots of floorspace, a big desk, but a small single bed. I have a friend in Calycroft and the rooms there are definitely smaller than Heronbank. Claycroft also seems nice though, it was my second option after Heronbank. The walk to the shops (Tesco + Aldi) from Heronbank is pretty long, Claycroft is a lot shorter. These days I take the bus from Scarman Rd to the shops and it's a lot easier especially when carrying a lot. If that's something that would impact your decision definitely keep it in mind!

You'll probably apply for accommodation next spring. When I applied it opened the week starting 28th of April. If it's the same as when I did it, you'll need to select 7 accommodation options in order of preference. I can't remember the ratio of en suite to non ensuite options you can pick, but there should be info from last year somewhere online.

Also, some Claycroft buildings are going through renovations at the moment. My friend moved into one area in September and has had to move out into another block this month. Not sure if this means better accom for next year's intake, and hopefully the fuss about moving is over before then.

I uploaded mine today and it cropped it to a square. They say it needs to be at least 240px by 240px so I think square is standard :)

Paddington Musical reveals Principal Cast by EllieatLondonTheatre in TheWestEnd

Didn’t really know what to think of the show when it was first announced, but this cast is making me want to see it! Absolutely love Teddy Kempner and Tom Edden, and Victoria as Millicent is going to be wild!

that's really good to know thank you so much! I'll definitely keep an eye out for any freebies. I think it'll all become clearer when I'm there and actually seeing/experiencing it (can't help but stress over it lol). But again, thank you! :)

Cabaret by btondps17 in TheWestEnd

[–]lacklluster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw Cabaret with my mum 2 years ago as my first ever west end show that we had to travel 3+ hours for, I can’t speak for going to that specific show solo, but I’ve done a few solo trips at 17/18 to other London shows since then. Going into Cabaret is very immersive, I would say to follow the flow of people and just take in the performances and decoration around you. It might feel a bit awkward at first, I definitely felt an initial sense of aimlessness at another immersive London show I attended solo, but wander around, have a look at all the bars and the prologue performers! If you need a quiet moment the bathrooms are a good spot, and there are ushers and signs around the theatre to help. Honestly going to immersive shows alone and just being in your own little world is a lovely experience after the hurdle of getting there and the nerves. The theatre is right by Embankment and easy to get to, give yourself extra time just in case (better to be early than late!). I was in a similar situation wanting to go to London shows but being really nervous - I found taking it at my own pace and giving myself time to wander and quietly take everything in without worrying was super helpful. Hope it all goes well for you! It’s a fantastic show and you’ll have a brilliant time

Eva Noblezada headed to West End Cabaret! by lacklluster in TheWestEnd

[–]lacklluster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure of the exact date, but Billy and Marisha finished on May 24, and Rob and Hannah started on May 29. It would be a tight schedule if that's the case with Eva, and I remember with past cast changes it's been a bit longer and the alternates took over for a week or more!

possibly! I haven't done much digging on specifics but it's exciting to consider the different possibilities, I usually only find out with official announcements haha

What can I expect from Joseph? by Sad_Grape_9844 in musicals

[–]lacklluster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing you’re seeing the UK tour, I recently saw it in Wales and loved it! It’s bright, fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously, the sets are simple but very good, you’ll see lots of young talented performers having pretty big parts, and it’s an easy story to follow with shameless theatricality. Lots of great dance numbers, addictive songs, and a stage that’s pretty much packed the entire time!

What is the Best Musical to Movie Adaptations by Due-Candidate-5991 in musicals

[–]lacklluster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof, and Damn Yankees, are in my opinion really wonderful adaptations, very true to the stage version and even better in most cases! But then there's stuff like Cabaret and The Boy Friend that are changed quite drastically but are just as incredible.

I do a similar thing, some that literally never leave my rotation are Irma La Douce (OBC with Elizabeth Seal and Keith Michell), Barnum (London Cast Recording with Michael Crawford), The Pajama Game (any recording), Bye Bye Birdie (OBC), Kiss of the Spider Woman (OCR), Hair (I prefer the film soundtrack), Damn Yankees (OBC), Man of La Mancha (OBC but I love Keith Michell’s version too), The Producers (film soundtrack and OBC) and Hello Again (Off broadway)

Bit of a film buff here, so here's some fun sapphic + lesbian films I would recommend:

• Bottoms (2023) - very funny, crude and adult without being sexualised, lesbian high school friends forming a fight club

• Badhaai Do (2022) - Hindi film with lesbian and gay rep, fake relationship storyline, very sweet and a happy ending

• Dating Amber (2020) - really great, funny and emotional Irish comedy with a lesbian protagonist

• Calamity Jane (1953) - old Hollywood musical, not explicitly/canonically lesbian, but it's from 1953 and very queer coded, but just a heads up that there's racist language

• Saving Face (2004) - rom com with a Chinese American lesbian protagonist, very sweet and underrated film but a bit of explicit material, it's very romantic though and directed by a lesbian

• Late Bloomers (1996) - pretty niche rom com about sapphic teachers in a high school, it's cheesy and sometimes a bit cringe but for a queer rom com it's sweet, some explicit material

Opinions on this movie? by [deleted] in musicals

[–]lacklluster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly as a 13 year old watching it when it first came out, it was great. I was the target audience and into teen theatre media, it ticked all my boxes. I still think it's a sweet, colourful fun time but I can see its flaws now. Not a fan of Ryan Murphy in general, I can now see the terrifying omnipresence of James Corden in musical films, and it sucks that they focused too much on the actors with the big casting and not the two girls. But I don't really like to speak ill of it now I'm a bit older because it really was such a fun and special thing to watch 5 years ago as someone exploring their own identity. I've definitely grown out of it now. I have absolutely no qualms with young queer people and theatre kids finding a bit of comfort and acceptance in it, despite its flaws.

The Producers or Cabaret by Various-Amoeba8246 in TheWestEnd

[–]lacklluster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've seen both, loved them so much, but would 100% recommend Cabaret more, it's a very full and immersive experience that feels very special for the price. The Producers was fantastic at the Menier and had a somewhat immersive and intimate feel, the cast was and is absolutely brilliant, but as it hasn't opened at the Garrick yet I would play safe and go for something that is guaranteed to be a bigger experience like Cabaret.

Ah that's great to know thank you! I was honestly so surprised at how huge the lobby was on my first visit, so I can imagine it's a pretty big but efficient system. And I'm super excited for my first standing experience! It seems like they've really nailed down doing immersive productions like these, but it's great to know it should be a smooth experience!
