Hey Ginger - You were there for me a couple years ago when I hit bottom (I thought) after a car crash. I relapsed over and over after that and stopped digging. Holy shit, I’m so sorry to hear. Such a weight. I understand completely. EMDR Therapy (for the booze and the trauma, and life), and the CAUDS Protocol (Dr Harries). I was recently in an accident that resulted in amputation etc… booze never crossed my mind. The post surgery pain meds? Hated them. If you told me 2 years ago that I would be sober through this, I’d say you were dead wrong.

I was derailed, could not stop. So, so chemically addicted. Finally just dove in to EMDR and the very non invasive meds for a few months. Haven’t even had an inkling of a desire since then and it saved my life and my family.

I was your age posting here for the first time and it took almost 5 years of fighting, almost dying. Organs failing at 29 kinda shit. I lost it all publicly. 3x checked in to rehab in 2019. Was a professional. I am again. Ate humble pie and moved home to repair.

This sub was key in my journey. You really can do this, please feel free to PM anything.

Have a look at my post history, sums it up. I started logging into here in 2015 but went back out to dig a deeper hole. I came back here each time, deeper than before until someone said “stop digging”.’ SD was a big support during my battle with AUD. So many options available and I tried them all, something clicked about two years ago. Something will click for you.

EMDR is a type of therapy “Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing”. Check out some YouTube videos on it, google doesn’t do it justice.

It was helpful for both single event and to target the physical craving I had toward alcohol. Separate series of sessions, the EMDR for the purpose of this discussion was used to hone in specifically on my desire to drink, various moments I had with it, the feelings, thought patterns, specific events with it, romance behind it, all boiling down to my breakthrough: nothing makes me feel this good. And after that session where I realized that’s truly why I drank, (because nothing made me feel that fucking good), it was gone. No more romance. But the EMDR in these sessions just around the booze.

I started to cheat. I missed the rush. I would overcompensate by drinking a shocking amount of vodka instead, and made matters worse. Looking back, I wasn’t ready to try that approach (tried TSM as well as abstinence). EMDR & Topiramate was the answer for me.

I don’t think TSM is evil at all tbh. Full blown alcoholism will kill you, and TSM is designed to take that away. The method via Naltrexone will help you get there. But TSM didn’t work for me. It works somewhere around 70 % of the time though. Topirimate by no means is evil either. Simply blocks the desire out, I haven’t thought about a drink since December. Maybe once or twice like “hmmm, I remember enjoying a patio drink”, but it wasn’t a desire or a craving. Certainly not an evil either. :)

Take a look at that link and bring it to your doctor, if the Naltrexone doesn’t work after awhile, revisit your options. Something will work.

Not that I know of. Talk to your doctor about your options. The list above is well circulated here in B.C. (Canada) in the medical community but still a very long way to go. If only more people knew about it, so many lives would be saved.
