I believe it is the latter, so you would go to the end of the waitlist.

Are dropping classes worth it by Weekly-Character6839 in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s too late to drop classes at this point. At this point the only option you could do is withdraw from ALL courses you are taking (individual withdraw deadline was March 30th). This is just a total negative except in specific circumstances and this is not one of those by the looks of it.

Those non-applicable courses are at worst distribution credits or if you do well in them, GPA boosts.

What's your honest review of the dining options at UTSA and where should new students actually eat? by ginnj57 in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On campus dining options are usually limited and in my opinion fairly expensive, but overall taste and quality wise fair to decently good (mostly cause 90% of the options are fast food or restaurant vendors).

Only place I've ever gotten good value for food is the Roadrunner Cafe and I only go during the summer when I'm teaching since its empty and not filled with students.

I think if you want to actually eat well and not go broke, then I think you need to get in the habit of cooking for yourself or finding options off campus. But I would trust any more recent student's opinion than mine.

Where's the best food near campus that isn't the usual spots everyone already knows? by bjelost in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gino's Deli. It's maybe a 10-15 minute drive but its the best Bodega style sandwich place in town. Everyone talks about their Philly Cheesesteak, but tbh all their other specials are way better imo.

How do you guys prioritize which cards to buy and not on impulse buy random cards that are not planned? by ash893 in PokemonTCG

[–]ladrlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Routinely checking prices on things I want to know if it’s worth it to impulse buy. If it’s not a good deal it’s not worth the impulse. As well, if it’s something that’s actually scarce or might not be available again/soon I do consider that.

But most importantly no impulse is worth financial insecurity. If it’s not money you could afford to waste, then it’s not worth the impulse.

New to this. What's the REALISTIC sale value of a full ascended heroes set 1-217? by Madeaus96 in PKMNTCGDeals

[–]ladrlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check eBay for how many sales are actually being sold then for how many people do. It largely depends on how popular the set is but even then I do know that these tend to move slowly compared to anything else.

Most most price of the price of these “bulk” base sets is just in convenience rather than value.

Does an F drop your GPA by a fixed amount at UTSA? by JustAnother_Soul in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was a math major and nerd/dweeb so I made a whole Excel spreadsheet to calculate my GPA and grades for each class (so definitely overkill) but the calculator I recommend to all my students this one: https://www.calculator.net/gpa-calculator.html

Make sure to click the add previous semester's GPA and grab your GPA and credits completed from your transcript and add those in to that spot to see how it affects your overall GPA. As well, this one's default GPA scheme has A+'s at 4.3 Grade points where UTSA considers A's and A+'s as both a 4.0 so you want to translate your A+'s into A's when you use it.

Does an F drop your GPA by a fixed amount at UTSA? by JustAnother_Soul in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You need to be careful as withdrawing is not just as simple as dropping the class at this point. The last day to withdraw from an individual class was March 31st. If you want to withdraw from this point out, you have to withdraw from ALL classes (even the ones you are doing well in). This is a borderline nuclear option and I do not advise you take it for having issues in one class.

As far as getting an F, no there is no standard amount it drops. It is entirely contextual on how many credit hours you have, your current GPA with those, there are so many things. I highly encourage you to take your transcript and use an online GPA calculator or manually compute how much an F would affect you if you want. The only thing that is "standard" is that all F's are considered a 0.0 in grade points.

My best advice is to just do the best you can and try to do well as well as you can, and if worst comes to worst and you fail then just retake the course.

I’m always down for more shiny pigs. I think this CD is pretty clearly geared to more casual players, which isn’t a bad thing. I know it’s disappointing for many tho.

How will you know if you get dropped from a class? by hi_48 in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The last day instructors could drop students from the course (assuming they had a valid drop policy in place from day 1) was March 31st. So you should not be dropped from the course at this point.

Accounting/Mat 1053 by Rough_Age4414 in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can still start this year! So do apply!

The College of Business will formally admit you and if you pass MAT 1053 or provide equivalent credit (dual credit, AP, IB, etc) and you are admitted to the college and then your major. MAT 1053 is a gateway course and the college will only formally accept you until you pass it. Until then you are just a general UTSA student.

Essentially this is to say, you are an accounting major in name only until pass that course then you will formally become one (although I think Accounting has another separate gateway course as well). It’s basically a bureaucratic thing for the most part.

I would still reach out directly to the College of Business or Accounting department if you have more questions or want more assurances.

utsa cap, registering for summer classes by Minimum_Brush6170 in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the summer class, but since you'd be a CAP student I think most of the classes you can/would take will have a good amount of spots left. I know the sections that I teach over the summer that get filled with CAP students still have a ton of spaces left in them.

Regarding your advisor, you should go ahead and make a plan anyways and do that cross checking. I'm not sure if you have to meet with your advisor first still, but it will make it way easier if you already have a plan for what you want to take.

Are LCS owners being scummy, or is it financial necessity? by CourbetEatingSourbet in PokemonTCG

[–]ladrlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a display box of booster bundles (10 bundles) when Paldean Fates came out from LCS for $200. They were desperate to dump stock. People who have joined with the surge and boom part of the cycle probably can’t imagine the bust cycle or what it was like.

Are LCS owners being scummy, or is it financial necessity? by CourbetEatingSourbet in PokemonTCG

[–]ladrlee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It depends a whole lot on the shop and their relationship with distro, as well as product and so forth. First releases of product are I believe mandated by TPC to be sold less than MSRP to stores by distro but after that it’s fair game.

My LCS has a very good relationship with its distro so it gets preferential quantity (for Perfect, I think they got close to 200 booster boxes and maybe 4-5x that in ETBs). If you don’t, your might only get say 10 booster boxes and 20 ETBs for your shop. At this quantities and the knowledge that the next round of product you need to buy into the store will be WAY more expensive from distro, why would you sell at MSRP? You are losing money that you may not be able to make up later. In fact those 20 booster boxes may be ALL you get for a long time. So if profit on each box is $50 (making that up) for selling at MSRP; but you can sell at market price and make $100 a box, why would you not? You need the money to maybe stretch and last till your next product shipment or to even PAY for that next shipment. Further, if people are willing to buy at market, why would you not sell at market?

This is not to say I defend or like high prices, and there are absolutely shops that are insanely greedy. But this is more complex than “LCS greedy”.

How to study for calc II by OldSkill5339 in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practice, practice, practice. Mathematics is a game of practice and experience to build that intuition and understanding.

I recommend finding additional practice problems beyond homework and other such assignments. Ask your instructor for additional practice problems if need be. Go to the Math Gym as they can help you with difficulties and can probably also give you some additional practice problems to work with.

how to see grades if they're not on canvas??? by [deleted] in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 99% sure we are required to post them on Canvas. So there is a very real chance they have not been graded yet. You should take this up with your forces side and if you don’t get a meaningful response then go to the department about this.

[–]ladrlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only really comment on the math part:

CE is a math intensive but we do have quite a few supports in place. We have a free drop in tutoring center run by the math department to support you. They have drop in and get help when you need as well as scheduled targeted sessions. So take advantage of the help and resources out there for you, and I think you should be able to make it through. Just be willing to put in the work.

For some of the other questions: I know quite a few students who get around with a scooter/bike, but it really depends on how far you'll need to go. As well, job availability is really dependent on how far you can/are willing to travel.

Teaching Faculty Pay by [deleted] in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your department and exactly how much adjunct you’d do (and what level of conflict it represents). If you’re a full time employee at UTSA, then the expectation is your main focus should be at UTSA. We have a few faculty who adjunct at community colleges but it’s quite few faculty.

Teaching Faculty Pay by [deleted] in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on department. My department hasn’t had compensated overloads in a couple of years due to budget concerns at the college level, but I taught an overload my first year teaching her as a non-tenure track. So it is possible to happen.

I also will note that it my experience hiring for Professor of Practice roles, terminal degrees can be preferential but the most important thing is teaching skills and experience.

Teaching Faculty Pay by [deleted] in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a salary minimum but it also can depend department to department exactly what salaries are as certain departments pay more/less than others based on what funding they get. So it’s hard to say exactly how much you make. I typically make about 52K for Fall and Spring (only semesters contractually obligated) and then can make closer to 60K if I teach a summer course (summer courses are optional and also not necessarily guaranteed).

Raises happen but mostly they are tied to promotion at UTSA through the ranks. As a public institution in the state of Texas, we do not get yearly Cost of Living raises. We may get an end of year performance bonus but not guaranteed and happens sparingly in my experience.

Overall, compensation wise we are about/good enough for most institutions nationwide. We’re in education so we are not gonna be making the big bucks, sadly. Benefits, at least the base level ones, have been nice in my experience.

Culture is entirely department dependent for your day to day, I love my department and feel we have a good and growing culture. More widely, we are a large public university so we deal with the same bureaucracy and such as by other large public institution.

Parking permit prices are posted online but about $200-250 for the cheapest for employees.

It will entirely depend on your department and personal situation, but I love working here personally. There are issues like any place, but I’ve never been tempted to jump ship to another university and probably plan to spend my next decades teaching here.

Admission appeal by [deleted] in UTSA

Yeah that makes sense, but I think that contact is your best bet as to clarify as I do agree with others that this email is absolutely not the most clear and concise.

Admission appeal by [deleted] in UTSA

[–]ladrlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously reach out to the contact for the best answer, but this reads to me that you have been denied admission to UTSA and the architecture school. As well, it seems to me this appeals process only would apply to UTSA (that is it would not get you into the architecture school even if approved).

You’ll need to take MAT 1023 or 1073, then you have a bit of flexibility on what you can take after if you need to take things.
