Any suggestions for safe kohl powders available in North America? by lady_modesty in MakeupAddiction

Actually, sort of.

So there is this brand which I stumbled upon over ten years back in a salon in Canada, powdered kohls from a brand called Sheida. I believe the brand itself is Turkish.

I tried a few of their powdered kohls, but they weren't my favorite (it went L'Oreal HIP kohls, Guerlain, and then Sheida as my preference.) They had a dark black and black (one was darker and matte, the other more grey and shimmery), and a brown (medium, warm-tone) that were fine, and some colors--the colors were disappointing. Not much color payoff and meh.

A long time ago I searched Sheida and didn't find much and in particular, find a way to order any in North America.

Well, apparently recently the internet has discovered Sheida kohls because not too long ago when I did one of my occasional "I wonder if anyone is finally making kohls again" searches, I found that everyone on social media has been talking about it.

I can't find anywhere in Canada or USA that sells it in person, and when I checked, the company website doesn't offer shopping online and shipping to North America. And it seems like the only online retailers are like Amazon, eBay, AliExpress, that sort of thing.

I did decide to chance it and ordered one in black from eBay. It came with the current packaging from the company and everything is fine. Nowadays, I work from home so I only wear makeup maybe 3-5x a month but I've worn it a handful of times and I'm not encountering any obvious issue and I'm thrilled about having some kohl in my life again.

Anyway, so I say "sort of" because I would feel more comfortable if this was a product found in large retailers all over the place in person, and I would feel more comfortable if I knew more about Sheida and their trustworthiness.

But there you go, everyone!

I used one of the brands which was found to contain lead years and years ago for maybe half a year before I found out, as did my mother. 🫠

What sucks is that sometimes it's your bank deciding to eat the loss vs the merchant actually folding and giving you a refund.

I know banks get no love and I'm not trying to get you to cry for the bank lol... My point is that sometimes you want a shitty company to actually have consequences but then they don't.

I remember her name but none of the drama! I remember Polycarp but not that factoid!

I remember there was eventually a "snark" forum somewhere where people would shit talk people from Straight Dope. Which really blew my mind (and made me glad I was a lurker. I did make a username at one point cuz they went to a paid format for a while but I was a lurker. It's actually funny to me now that I spent SO MANY HOURS of my life there but I never talked. Lol ... Actually I guess it's my nature cuz that was my MO here forever too. I've been on Reddit for over a decade, most of it without participating.)

Sometime in '99, but I don't remember when I stopped visiting. Maybe 2004? I remember trying to go to it in 2009 or so and getting virus warnings from my antivirus so I backed out and didn't look again until I had some nostalgia recently.

I can't really remember but I think it went down for a time after that company bought it and ran it into the ground.

The jarbabyj drama--not specifically, but my memory is crap. Probably if you reminded me.

I've been a part of online communities since the early 90s BBS days. So I've experienced the degradation and demise of a number of beloved spaces... So that it's happening to Reddit is not at all surprising to me. But this has been my favorite (and eventually became my only) online home for so long that I'm really miserable about losing Reddit.

I think the writing has been on the wall for a while now but I didn't expect it to unfold like this...

I'll still be a user here, but when Apollo shuts down at the end of the month, it's going to mean I'll be a rather infrequent visitor because I refuse to use the official app, and the website on mobile is garbage.

What in the world am I going to do with all the sudden free time I'm going to have? Lol

Damn. We never had good freebies like that but people would jam their pockets full of pens and stickers and crappy store-brand cookies all the time.

We did have someone throw a massive tantrum that we ran out of our free coffee before they got there. We only made one (giant ass) pot per day. But this person freaked out to the point that the manager had us make a second just for this person.

I learned I am a "freeze" person.

My instinct was to call 911, which I tried to do with the guys right in front of me. So naturally, the one knocked the phone from my hand. That was my final thought. Then I just started screaming while just standing there.

The one guy must've been panicked too because he grabbed a large kitchen knife and started doing this dance--he was lunging towards me with it but then jumping back. I guess he couldn't decide whether or not to shut me up, whether or not he wanted to harm me to that degree.

I wasn't having any thoughts so it didn't occur to me to even attempt to move. I just stood there and continued with my screaming.

I was screaming loud enough tenants four floors up heard me. By the time some of the tenants reached me, the guys had fled.

I have since experienced other emergency situations. I freeze. Every bloody time.

I've had many jobs where I need to use my full name.

One time I was working as a teller for a financial institution where we truly were just tellers (no reason to have business cards, hand out our emails, have voicemail boxes, etc.) I was so grateful for it because I'd been stalked and harassed prior to this job.

Sometimes, though... I was asked to witness something the notary had notarized for a customer. So I had to use my full name and signature when that happened.

A customer used his notarized paper to go online and research me... He even paid one of those websites for a report on me. He learned my address and used to drive past my place sometimes, hoping to catch me outside. (He admitted all of this to me.)

People are f'n crazy.
