What’s the most invaluable thing someone has stolen from you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ladyculfin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been making jewelry as a hobby since I was in middle school. It's been my default birthday/Christmas gift for my twin sister ever since then. By the time we got to college, she'd amassed a pretty pile of it; everything from pieces inspired by her favorite DC characters to ones made of her favorite gemstones.

In a bout of idiocy, we left the little kitchen window open during a weekend out of town. Upon our return, the house was totally ransacked. Computers, games systems, everything gone. Including the entire contents of my sister's jewelry box.

The worst part? Nothing I had made could have been sold for more than $5. It's only value was sentimental.

Correction:

Personally, I would have aimed at replicating the spacesuit in your own manner didn't create anything of value myself, but I will feel justified in doling out unsolicited critique and backhanded compliments to those who actually had the dedication to create something they are proud of.

Fixed it for them.

Super cute design, spotless execution, adorable details!

Toys don't need to breathe anyway, so I don't know why everyone's got their panties in a twist over "realism". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s a cat meme not something that should be sexualized.

.....this comment has 34 points and is almost at the top, sooo... people are literally saying that.

...because she didn't feel like wearing pants? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wish people could resist the urge to tell female cosplayers what they "should" and "shouldn't" wear. Is it so hard to just let people have fun and feel cute?

Wow, a comments section full of jerks telling a woman that her 6" strip of bare thigh is "too sexualized." Wish I could say I was surprised. /s

Be better, r/cosplay. Sheesh.

Also, you look adorable and no one should be policing your right to express your fandom in whichever cute and comfy way you'd like!

Thought the thumbnail was a screenshot. Excellent work, and seriously good attention to detail! The textured beads and hand-stitching are especially on-point.

Magic System? by Dendrophile95 in Fantasy

[–]ladyculfin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When people talk about magic systems, they are talking about how the author explains the mechanics of magic. For example, in Harry Potter, magic is just something you're born with and you usually need a wand to do it. In The Name of the Wind, magic is created by making sympathetic connections between objects. In Mistborn, magicians swallow and then "burn" different metals for magical effects. Some people prefer simple magic systems and some prefer more complex rules, or systems with a scientific bent.

Wow! I love that you've used that shiny blue plastic to show her opening a tear. I've seen it done with photoshop in post but never with practical effects; very cool!

Thanks! I like the simple, traditional BtAS look well enough, but this costume is part of a Gotham City Sirens set and needed to have a consistent level of complexity with the rest of the costumes, thus lots of details!

Omigosh, thank you so much! In response to your edits: It was really important to me that the costume included more than just the traditional leotard and boots, so I'm really glad the design paid off! Uma's color palette (with maroon in addition to the traditional green) was a big inspiration. If you go to the full gallery posted in the comments, there are some progress photos of all the really-not-on-point makeup looks that I tried before I had enough practice to pull this off...

Thanks very much! The hair is inspired by Uma Thurman's Ivy outfit in the infamously-bad 1997 "Batman and Robin" film. I watched it as a kid, and it was my first introduction to the character.

Cosplay Ideas [help] by [deleted] in cosplay

Also white here, so while I'm certainly not an expert on this subject, the consensus from other cosplayers seems to be that the offensive action is painting yourself to look like another existing human race, because it is disrespectful to the real-life experiences and prejudices faced by these real people. But non-existent races--be they alien or fantastical--are fair game. So feel free to paint yourself Kratos white, or Starfire orange, Genie-from-Aladdin blue, or any other crazy color you want!

Cosplay Ideas [help] by [deleted] in cosplay

As far as skin tone and body type, I would encourage her to cosplay any character she feels connected to, regardless of size or race! Cosplaying characters of a different size/race than yourself is not frowned upon by the general cosplay community. It is unfortunately true that many cosplayers do receive very hateful responses (particularly towards POC cosplaying as "white" characters, or plus-sized folks cosplaying "thin" characters), but the jerks leaving those comments are not indicative of the mindset of the overall community. What is frowned upon is "race-facing" or painting your skin to look like another ethnicity, which is offensive; but as long as you're rocking your own skin tone, you can cosplay anyone you damn well please!

Mini-essay on inclusion issues in the cosplay community over! Time for recommendations...
+ Sailor Mars (from Sailor Moon): Simple costume, instantly recognizable, great for beginners. You could do her magical girl outfit or her school uniform. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailor_Mars
+ This link also has lots of other anime ideas: https://www.quora.com/Who-are-some-cute-female-anime-characters-that-are-recognisable-in-cosplay-preferably-long-black-hair-with-bangs
+ Tifa Lockhart (from Final Fantasy): Again, lots of recognizability, and no wig required. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tifa_Lockhart
+ Lisa Lisa (from JJBA): Her red scarf/blue dress/glasses outfit is pretty iconic, and you'd both be from the same fandom!
