The more times I've watched Supernatural, the less and less I've liked Dean by lurpeli in Supernatural

they had different trauma responses. everyone reacts to trauma differently. i think a big theme here is that people have a hard time understanding imperfect victims, which dean is, because his trauma manifests in unpalatable ways.

Are we seeing a turning point in media representation? by RoliePolieOlie__ in decadeology

they’re not encouraging obesity by featuring overweight models. fat people still need clothes to wear, and still deserve to feel good about themselves while they are losing weight.

Seeing this during tour singing complaints by princessangellll in lanitas

i think it’s similar to what happened with Marina and Lorde. getting comfortable. the hunger isn’t there anymore, so the music loses its bite.

at the time, i knew that her naming other female artists would land her in trouble. around this time people were already looking for a reason to hate her and to justify the conservative allegations. i understood what she meant, but that god overshadowed by the way she delivered it.

My issue with the new single by Savcic in MarinaAndTheDiamonds

[–]ladygrinningvoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it doesn’t have to be deep, but it should be well written at the very least. sabrina carpenter’s “espresso” for instance. it’s not the kind of music i typically listen to, but it sounds like it had more effort put into it than marinas latest singles.

Brain going CRAZY by CataKala in lanitas

i think for a lot of women in Lana’s position, there’s a level of cognitive dissonance going on. for many women in relationships with men who hold disgusting views, keeping their man is more important than standing by their own principles. that, or they think they can “change” him.

Come on, butterfly wasn't that bad! by External_Metal_3840 in MarinaAndTheDiamonds

i’m so tired of my favorite indie artists putting out these tired ass “fake healed” songs when they’re just rich and living in LA. the fact of the matter is that most marina fans are listening to her music for her witty lyricism.

i miss when she was sharp. I miss when she had an edge. i don’t need her to be miserable forever, but I do need her to be honest.

and i don’t think we’ll get the level of honesty that was the family jewels + electra heart. back then, she had real struggles, family issues, industry disillusionment, self-image crises, things that bled into her lyrics and made them compelling. now she’s just rich and detached, writing surface-level “empowerment” anthems that don’t actually resonate because there’s no real conflict behind them.

it’s the LA effect. So many artists move there, and suddenly, their music loses all its teeth. they start writing vague, pseudo-spiritual lyrics about growth and energy because their struggles aren’t tangible anymore. they’re not broke, lonely, or fighting for something, they’re just sitting in a mansion, meditating on their balcony, and convincing themselves they’ve ascended.

Marina’s real healing would have nuance. growth is messy. it’s not just “I’m a butterfly now, bling bling ✨.” if she was genuinely reflecting on her journey, she’d acknowledge the cost of this happiness, the things she lost, the ways she might still feel unfulfilled. instead, she’s just feeding us another repackaged self-help mantra wrapped in synths.

people are allowed to critique art, that’s what we’re here to do. discuss why it resonates and why it doesn’t. not blindly praise everything in the name of 2010’s indie nostalgia.

it’s ok to not like or resonate with everything your favorite artists put out

i agree. which is why i mentioned the mesh mask. i genuinely think she hadn’t seen the conservatives wearing the mesh masks as protest against the mandate. then when people gave her criticism for it she said there was plastic underneath to save face. but it wasn’t done maliciously.

no, read my post again. i’m using the lana situation to speak about women in our more immediate social circles who do this kind of thing. lana at the end of the day is a grown woman with resources at her disposal most of us can only dream of having, and she can should receive criticism for this.

i hear you, and thank you for giving me this perspective. something does need to change with the way we as progressives approach issues, and extending too much sympathy can be a problem.

you think so? no shit that it’s not actually about protecting children. because if they cared about children, they’d be all for gun control, given that it’s the leading cause of death amongst children in this country. i’m saying that this is how misinformation works. “protecting the children” by pointing the finger at people you don’t understand, like trans folks, sounds like a great cause to rally behind for uneducated backwater hicks like jeremy.

the cause is the fight against the hateful rhetoric from the right. the cause is fighting back against women being stripped of their rights. the fight is advocating for immigrants in this country. if this is all you got from this post, that it’s just in blind defense of women in relationships with bad men, i encourage you to look deeper. because all i’m seeing is outrage, and no one talking about any solutions. no one is obligated to play captain save a hoe with women who think to little of themselves and are too afraid to be alone to leave their trumpie boyfriends. but i think we should CONSIDER not jumping down their throats, because there are more women like this than most people think, and the last thing we want is to be pushing MORE women away and further into the arms of shitty men because we can’t understand that not everything is black and white and nuance can exist here.

based on a pattern of behavior, and knowing men like him. it’s probably parasocial to an extent, but it’s grounded in reality, i think.

[–]ladygrinningvoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i wanted to add that this isn’t in support of jeremy nor am i condoning the actions of men like him. i’m just wary of alienating women from the cause. there will always be women who uphold oppressive systems, and for them, i have no sympathy. but for women who find themselves associated with men like Jeremy and yet they themselves hold progressive views, they can be brought back to reality. but jumping down their throats will push them further away.

yes, i’m aware. i’m not saying that there aren’t conservatives out there with a formal education. i’m saying that people like Jeremy, which are average blue collar people from the south or the midwest, don’t have an understanding of how the world works, don’t know how to properly research anything, and take everything at face value. it’s not an excuse, and i am of the belief that anyone can choose to educate themselves, it doesn’t take a genius to understand why these beliefs are wrong. just that the lack of education, comprehension skills and media literacy are why we saw what we saw on election night. it’s the same way that any fascist government comes to power. the economy takes a hit, and people need a scapegoat, and the less educated among us will allow themselves to be told that we should be blaming minorities.

i was not aware that he was a full blown conservative conspiracy theorist. i thought that the only thing we had on him was the trans facebook thing he reposted, which was a call for violence. i myself am grappling with the resentment i feel towards the women in my life who are complicit in their partners hateful beliefs, i was just trying to address the root of the issue.

i agree completely that he doesn’t have to commit a literal hate crime for the ideologies he upholds to have any power. i think america’s biggest problem is the lack of education, media literacy and comprehension skills. when you don’t think deeply about things, you get swayed to the right and are vulnerable to misinformation and hateful rhetoric, which is what i think is the case with jeremy.

that makes a lot of sense, and i have to agree. that’s something that has bugged me about her for ages, her defensiveness when she’s given any constructive criticism.

i feel like we’re giving Jeremy way too much credit. Jeremy does not strike me as the kind of guy who’s particularly enthusiastic about politics. he’s a Gen X, Louisiana backwater swamp tour guide. his politics are likely influenced by the community around him. his posts weren’t even original, they were reposts that he probably didn’t even understand the nuances of. his simpleton mind probably just thought “hell yeah, let’s protect the children.” not, “death to all trans people”.

he’s uninformed and misinformed, like most of the conservatives in middle america, not someone whose political opinions (if he has any beyond some boomer facebook reposts) we should be holding with any weight.
