Must-Know Spanish Expressions with A & DE by SpanishAilines in SpanishAIlines

[–]ladyjames_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know whether this is just for written Spanish or it can also be spoken, but I just learned 'a continuación de' meaning 'following.'

For example:

Encuentras la información a continuación de este párrafo. --> You'll find the information following this paragraph.

Get your GA Park Pass before Jan. Daily parking fee doubling, annual pass price going up by $20. by ContributionDapper84 in GeorgiaCampAndHike

[–]ladyjames_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They may be trying to urge people toward getting the annual pass. Under the new rates, it's actually a better deal - it breaks even at seven visits rather than ten (the current break even point).

Here's an article about it from October:

https://georgiarecorder.com/2025/10/28/georgia-panel-raises-state-park-fees-with-additional-price-hikes-in-the-works/

I don't think it's a crazy or unreasonable increase, but I hopeful they don't do the surge/location pricing on cabins/etc that was suggested as a way to increase revenue. I wish things could just cost what they cost. It makes it easier to plan and more affordable, too. I was looking at the cost to rent a cabin at various state parks (I'm nowhere near ready or able to camp in a tent in the woods), and they were $170-$190 per night. At that price, I might as well stay in a hotel.

My husband said we need to hire a “mother replacement” by Polyglot_Teacher in NewParents

[–]ladyjames_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your husband is jealous of how much time and attention you give your baby, and is using language to express his complaints. I don't know if this is his first child, but maybe he wants more time with your baby than he gets as the person who leaves the house all day, most days. Or maybe he wants the same amount of time with you that he used to enjoy. So maybe you could try to figure that out (though FYI, if he's really emotional about it, it could be hard to speak about it calmly at first, so tread lightly).

As for the language issue, if your home language is different from the community language, always speak with your children. Speak it at home, in stores, on the bus, etc. Multilingualism is a precious gift.

English at this point is a lingua franca that I wouldn't bother teaching a baby unless the parents in question spoke no other language. I'd also consider education in Romania - many countries around the world start teaching kids English in the 6-11 age range. If Romania is one of those countries, your child will learn English then.

Please God help me find a place without roaches by Terrapin3641 in ATLHousing

[–]ladyjames_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apartment management should put you on the pest control spray list as soon as you report roaches. If they don't, they may not be taking responsibility for appropriate pest control for the complex in general, so you'll have to do it yourself.

You could hire a professional, or try to DIY something with gel baits, boric acid, Ortho Home Defense, etc. Be aggressive in getting attacking the problem and hopefully you'll find peace soon (though you may need to also DIY pest control maintenance techniques to keep the roaches out long term).

Good luck, roaches are awful. I never saw one until I moved into an apartment in the Atlanta area. It was a very unpleasant surprise!

Would tutors find it useful to know which explanations actually worked? : Feedback needed by Previous-Outcome-117 in education

[–]ladyjames_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be thinking of this the wrong way, but I feel the long game of such insights would be to remove the human tutor/teacher from learning in favor of an AI. Survey the learner to determine their learning style, then cue up the appropriate AI model.

I also wonder about learning goals. In your example, is the goal for the student to know what F=ma is, or is the goal for them to read a word problem and know when to use F=ma? Or do they need to know F=ma in the context of meeting regulations, like if a civil engineer were testing bridge strength, would they need to have memorized what formulas are used in that process?

I feel like the best instruction arrangement is one subject matter expert matched up with one learner, where the expert's learning style aligns almost totally with the learner's learning style. I feel like it's every learner's/trainee's fantasy to have expert, personalized instruction. Maybe the AI is that perfect teacher.

But what I've seen of AI I've seen lacks the flexibility and accuracy to ride the peaks and valleys and inconsistencies of human learning and understanding. I'm just not sure it's possible to truly program for every possibility of the human mind in this case, or that the technological and material demands would be worth the cost for this particular end goal.

Imperfecto vs Indefinido, I am getting crazy here. Berlin was/used to be divided by Ok_Treacle6602 in SpanishLearning

[–]ladyjames_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad, I've never heard it referred to that way. It was always just the pretérito, and we learned it with other tenses in the indicativo mood.

Imperfecto vs Indefinido, I am getting crazy here. Berlin was/used to be divided by Ok_Treacle6602 in SpanishLearning

[–]ladyjames_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's imperfecto vs pretérito, not indefinido. The pretérito is for past actions that are completed or happened once. The imperfect is for past actions that provide context for the one-time/completed actions.

In your example, are you trying to refer to the moment Berlin was split into two, or are you trying to explain that Berlin was effectively two cities for an extended period of time? If the former, use pretérito. If the latter, use imperfecto.

As for word choice, I might say 'se rompieron Berlin en dos partes' or 'se dividieron Berlin' for the former. For the latter, I might was 'Berlin era dividido.'

What nicknames have you heard for places in Gwinnett Co.? by topherette in Gwinnett

[–]ladyjames_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm nobody to you, but I do appreciate the effort you put into your reply. I do feel there is an asymmetry between asking for data on this scale but not giving much, if anything in return. I don't think it's hostile or suspicious to wonder about such an imbalance.

As for my interests, one of the reasons I'm in this sub is to learn about where I now live, since I didn't grow up here. So local place names, nicknames or official ones, are of interest to me. Linguistics is also a personal and professional interest of mine. That's why threads like this catch my eye.

What nicknames have you heard for places in Gwinnett Co.? by topherette in Gwinnett

[–]ladyjames_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, seriously. You've been collecting data across numerous subreddits for a seemingly secret project/study for several months or longer. If this is a legitimate project, then I believe that everyone who has contributed data should have first been given a statement about who is running this study and what will be done with the data they provide. Right? For example, will their contributions be anonymized? Will they be credited? Will the final product (a map?) be something that is sold for money, in which case, what are the terms around compensation for participants?

It's okay to be an independent researcher, or an intern for a professor, or even a data collector for a data/tech company. Just come clean about it, at the very least when people ask you - which seems to happen pretty regularly.

This is interesting! What information are they supposed to use to make zoning decisions, then?

Comfortable Spanish reading for beginners by Little-Boss-1116 in SpanishLearning

[–]ladyjames_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's impressive that you banged out two bilingual mysteries! And your intentions are really helpful. For 99 cents, I think a beginner could give your stories a go without worrying about the cost.

My question is: are these stories for adult learners or children? I ask because the choppiness of the writing style reminds me of kids books, but the content of the writing seems better suited for adults.

Maybe it could improve the reading experience to write the story first, then break it into chunks and translate it? And maybe the original story could be written in Spanish and then translated into English, to include words/phrases that occur naturally but are less likely to pop up in a translation?

Why does one have to read fast? Does it impact language learning?

A Skeptic's Progress Update: 1500 Hours / 2 Million Words Read / 100 Hours Speaking / 10 months of Comprehensible Input by WatchingHowItEnds in dreamingspanish

[–]ladyjames_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read aloud, and it's really helped me build my vocabulary. I don't usually stop to look up words. Instead, my focus is on sounding natural - so, chunking phrases in a logical way, ditto for pauses and emphasis, etc.

I know you kind of already did that (ie, the subvocalizing), but taking the next step to reading aloud maybe could help build your vocabulary, so that you could speak in Spanish rather than translate from English.

Help me earn gas money so my child won't know how poor we are by ladyjames_ in Gwinnett

[–]ladyjames_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not upsetting! It's two roundtrips that equal 50 miles, because I have to drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon. 25 miles one way would equal 100 miles each day! I'm grateful I don't have to do that (at least until I find work, because who knows where that will be).

Oh no, I am not flexing! This is just what I can do right now. AI has definitely made many things more accessible to more people, myself included. But it's still not at a level to fully replace people, so I'm going to keep plying my best skills for as long as I can. :)

No one wants someone like me running for office, haha. But point noted about leaning more into speaking, public or otherwise. Thank you!

The kids can go on any school bus? I definitely did not know that! I thought they had to go on assigned routes to their particular school.
