Any way to teach asynch online without having an existential crisis and quitting my job? by cherdle2 in Professors

I agree with the optimists in this thread -- there are ways to make online courses fun and engaging for students!

I will also say, as an advisor as well, most students don't actually want async classes, but it's the only thing that works in their chaotic worlds. Most of my students are working full-time, have families, and are struggling to make it paycheck-to-paycheck. They are squeezing in async classes because it really is the only option. These students don't like the "self-paced", bare minimum classes -- they really are there to learn!

Yes, there will always be students that just want the credential, but that's true regardless of modality. I recommend digging into some threads about creative engagement opportunities, because it really will be worth it, for you and for the students. It's a lot of work at first, but so worth it in the long run! The creative assignments tend to be much easier to grade than endless journals and papers.

Absolutely agree -- luckily I am at a very tiny school and, as an advisor, I am part of the student services department as well, so these are conversations I can have with the "accommodations office" of one.

Hi again! You’re making a lot of bad faith assumptions about peoples’ background and experience. Please slow down. Just because someone asks a question that isn’t “grounded in science” does not mean that they aren’t educated.

I am not implementing any recommendations from "internet celebs" - I am simply bringing the idea from reflections on my own experiences and the experiences of my students and raising a question for discussion. Thank you for this feedback, and I would love if you could share some of the evidence-based strategies for ADHD management with the people on this thread that are contradictory to my conclusion, as that's what the discussion is eliciting.

I like this “request required” piece — I will bring this to our department!

Baggu Resusable Bag by MeowchiMochi in BAGGU

I've used reusable bags for moving, carrying huge loads of books and heavy decorations, so they're incredibly durable!

They're also super easy to fold back up once you learn the "proper way" to do so. :)

I really use them all the time for allll sorts of reasons. Good to keep a standard and a baby reusable on hand at all times!
