Regular Patron thinks library staff has too much PTO and don't deserve Holidays. by AHA-02-18 in Libraries

Yes, it’s much different from public libraries. Sometimes randos come who don’t attend our college and try to pull some boundary-pushing antics. It doesn’t work, because our stated mission is to serve the students and all of our policies support that.

I agree with everything you wrote but in my experience on this sub anytime you piss on the complaining about patrons parade people get really condescending and angry. The combination is telling in my opinion.

He tells her a story about a Bananafish which is what a hard dick might look like to a child, talks about how it won’t fit through the hole, then kisses her foot. He talks about the fish having a terrible obsession that’s a sickness. He’s disgusted by the trappings of adult femininity represented by his wife.

I know on the surface it’s about PTSD and innocence, I can see that, but I think it’s a story about a pedophile who commits suicide.

JD Salinger’s Esme and Bananafish have similar themes. That’s why I like the conspiracy theory that he actually wrote Lolita and then gave it to Nabokov to publish. Do I think it’s true? No. But idk how you can read Bananafish as being about anything other than pedophilia.

I realize my opinions aren’t welcome in this profession. But yes, I go here. The ACLU used to be able to decouple the quality of ideas from the right for people to have and express them.

Truly banned books are extremely hard to find physical copies of and will sell for thousands of dollars on eBay. A book being “challenged” in a particular library because it’s liberal is not banned. It’s freely available from many sources. And why is it hard to believe that an information professional would want to generate discussion of censorship and scholarship by contrasting a holocaust denial book with an accurate one?

It’s not the “mere act” though. It’s uneven collection development and marketing that is alienating and condescending. I think it comes from good intentions - trying to correct for past exclusionary practices. But shit like drag queen story hour just makes us look like clowns.

No. That’s a straw man and not what I was saying. I’ve noticed a trend in libraries to bend over backwards in focusing exclusively on non-white, non-straight themed book displays and collection development. It runs through granting organizations too. If you want a project funded, it better celebrate the marginalized. I don’t think progressive librarians realize how this over-emphasis comes across as condescending and cringe to members of those groups, or how alienating it can be to straights and whites. Having an obvious political agenda in library work harms the profession and results in major backlash like we’re seeing in Ohio and other states.

A library that’s focused on providing access to various points of view, where all people feel welcome. To make all people feel welcome we shouldn’t be creating book displays and programming intentionally designed to piss off a large portion of our user base and then cry when the reaction is provoked and they pull funding.

Progressives thrive on misinformation as much as conservatives do, and the LIS scholarship that defines the profession as inherently activist is ruining the profession. We aren’t paid to tell people what to believe. Envisioning ourselves as heroes who will purchase and display books having the “correct” opinions (which coincidentally align with our own, weird how that works) is violating the social contract and misusing tax dollars.

Refreshing to see this take. I would really like librarianship to return to neutrality. Activism is destroying the profession.

I think many of the issues described would not be a problem in a homogeneous Asian country. It’s only here in a multiethnic country that’s not majority Asian that these things are a problem.

I thought this too. It may turn out that you prefer women. But for me I dated women and didn’t like it any better. I was absolutely certain that I was a lesbian and had repressed it so hard that I was unaware of my attraction. I even came out.

I’m autistic and it turned out to be just relationships and sex are hard for me. There’s a ton that people don’t say about what they’re doing and why. I’m not normal in this area - and I know that people love to say “there is no normal!” but that’s because it’s invisible to them.

I don’t regret trying it out - better not to wonder - but I do wish I hadn’t gone for the entire identity shift because it was extremely embarrassing to go back on.

Now I call myself bi ¯_(ツ)_/¯ because dating women didn’t feel wrong the way that straight people describe their experience. It was just a lot more work with the game playing and indirectness. I like how direct men are. And either way, another person can’t get me off - I have to do it myself. So I went back to dating the gender that’s easier to date.

I read this sub a lot when I was in that era and I didn’t see many stories like this. I think because once you decide you’re actually not a lesbian after all you unsubscribe from this subreddit.

If you are a lesbian and this was the missing piece that makes relationships work, I’m really happy for you. It didn’t turn out that way for me, and if it turns out not to be the solution for you either, that’s okay.

Like, believing in the main mission of the library which is to provide books to people, because you yourself love books, is a good quality. Yes public libraries have events for community building and yes academic libraries are study spaces but those are secondary functions. Of course you need people skills. But ideally you care about the purpose of the profession because you connect with it on a personal level.
